Chapter 34 - The Echo of Legends

The silence that followed their victory was both deafening and uneasy. Canila and Freya stood in the vast cavern, the light from the now-sealed altar barely illuminating their faces. The dark energy that once coiled and threatened them was gone, but the memory of its presence lingered, thick and foreboding.

"We need to report this," Freya said, her voice low. She turned toward the tunnel that led back to the surface, but Canila's eyes remained fixed on the altar.

"Something doesn't feel right," Canila muttered, his hand hovering over the hilt of his sword.

Freya stopped and glanced back at him, sensing his unease. "The ritual worked, Canila. We sealed it."

"I know," he said, his voice heavy with doubt. "But I can't shake the feeling that we've only delayed what's coming. There's more to this than just sealing an ancient force."

Freya frowned, walking back to him. "What do you mean?"

Before Canila could answer, a faint, almost imperceptible hum filled the air. It was low, a soft reverberation that seemed to come from all around them. The ground beneath their feet vibrated, and the altar—though dormant—seemed to pulse faintly with the rhythm of the sound.

"That can't be good," Freya whispered, her eyes darting to the glowing runes on the altar.

Canila stepped forward, his senses on high alert. "Whatever we sealed… it's connected to something much bigger. This place… the ruins of Aetheros… they're not just a prison. They're part of a network."

Freya's eyes widened. "A network of what?"

"Power," Canila replied. "Ancient, buried power. And we just stirred it."

The hum grew louder, and from the shadows of the cavern, a figure emerged. It was cloaked in darkness, its form indistinguishable, but the energy radiating from it was unmistakable. Canila immediately drew his sword, and Freya raised her tablet, readying a spell.

The figure stopped a few meters from them, its voice echoing through the cavern, low and haunting. "You have interfered with the balance. You do not understand the forces you are meddling with."

Freya's grip on her tablet tightened. "Who are you?"

The figure's form shifted slightly, though its features remained obscured. "I am the Keeper of the Abyss. The warden of what lies beneath these ruins. You were not meant to seal it… but to protect it."

Canila narrowed his eyes. "Protect it? That thing was trying to break free and consume everything."

The Keeper's voice was calm, almost indifferent. "You misunderstand. What you fought was a fraction of a greater entity. The Echoes are but reflections of the true force bound here. Your actions have destabilized the seal. What you thought you stopped is now closer to awakening."

Freya's face paled. "But the ritual—"

"The ritual was incomplete," the Keeper interrupted. "You delayed the inevitable, but the true danger lies beyond this place. The heart of the Echoes may have been here, but the source is far deeper, in the Abyss itself. And now, it is stirring."

Canila stepped forward, his sword glowing faintly with his power. "What's in the Abyss?"

The Keeper paused, its dark form flickering. "A being older than this world. A force of chaos and destruction, sealed away by the first civilizations. It is said that when the Echoes fade, the Abyss will rise, and with it, the end of all things."

Freya's eyes widened. "How do we stop it?"

The Keeper's voice grew softer. "There is no stopping it. Only delaying it, as your ancestors once did."

Canila's mind raced. If what the Keeper said was true, they had only scratched the surface of the danger lurking beneath Aetheros. But there was something else—something the Keeper wasn't saying.

"And what do you get out of this?" Canila asked, his voice cold and suspicious.

The Keeper was silent for a long moment, before replying. "I am bound to the Abyss, as it is bound to me. When the Abyss awakens, I will be free. I wish only for the balance to be maintained until the time comes."

Freya stepped closer to Canila, her voice low. "We can't let this thing free, Canila. We have to find a way to stop the Abyss from awakening."

Canila nodded, his gaze never leaving the shadowed figure. "We will. But we're going to need more than just the two of us."

The Keeper's form began to fade, its voice echoing as it disappeared into the darkness. "The path to the Abyss lies before you. But beware—there are forces beyond your understanding waiting in the depths. You may not survive what is to come."

As the Keeper vanished, the humming stopped, leaving the cavern in a tense, oppressive silence.

Freya turned to Canila, her eyes full of questions. "What now?"

Canila sheathed his sword, his expression grim. "Now, we gather our team. If we're going to face what's in the Abyss, we'll need Braxus, Rhea, Kael, Fynn, and Elara. This is bigger than any of us, and we're going to need all the help we can get."

Freya nodded, determination in her eyes. "I'll start tracking them down."

Canila took one last look at the altar before turning to leave the cavern. "We'll need to move quickly. If the Abyss is waking up, we don't have much time."

As they made their way back toward the surface, the weight of what they had learned pressed heavily on their shoulders. The Echoes were just the beginning, and the true threat was far more terrifying than they had imagined.

The Abyss awaited them, and whatever lay within it was stirring.
