Chapter 40 - Trials of the Fane

The journey toward the Fane of Echoes took Canila and his team through the remnants of ancient lands, where time itself seemed to stand still. The trees towered above them, their gnarled branches twisted like the thoughts racing through Canila's mind. Each step brought them closer to their destiny, yet a feeling of unease settled over the group.

Freya walked beside him, her gaze shifting between the darkening sky and the path ahead. "Are you ready for what's to come?" she asked, concern etching her features.

Canila nodded, though uncertainty loomed large. "We've faced impossible odds before. We can do this."

As they approached a clearing, the air grew thick with tension. A massive stone structure loomed ahead, its entrance flanked by two colossal statues, guardians of the Fane. Ancient runes covered the archway, pulsating with energy.

"This is it," Kael said, his voice low and reverent. "The Fane of Echoes."

Braxus stepped forward, cracking his knuckles in anticipation. "Let's get this over with. I'm ready to smash some Echoes."

"Hold on," Canila warned, raising a hand. "We need to be cautious. The Harbinger said there would be trials. We should prepare ourselves."

Freya pulled the pendant from around her neck, the key glinting in the dim light. "The key should guide us through. It might react when we're close to something important."

As if responding to her words, the key began to shimmer, casting a soft glow. They exchanged glances, a mixture of hope and apprehension filling the air.

With a deep breath, Canila stepped forward and placed his hand on the ancient stone. The moment he made contact, a pulse of energy surged through him, and the runes flared to life. The entrance of the Fane opened, revealing a vast interior shrouded in shadow.

"Let's go," Canila urged, leading the way into the darkness.

Inside, the Fane was both majestic and foreboding. Tall pillars rose toward a ceiling obscured by darkness, and the walls were covered in intricate carvings depicting battles between Echoes and their foes. A distant echo of whispers floated through the air, making the hair on the back of Canila's neck stand on end.

As they ventured deeper, a sudden force pulled at them, and they found themselves standing in a vast chamber with a shimmering barrier blocking their path.

"Welcome, seekers," a voice boomed from nowhere, resonating within the chamber. "To pass into the heart of the Fane, you must face your trials."

Canila narrowed his eyes. "What kind of trials?"

"Trials of courage, wisdom, and strength," the voice replied. "Only those who prove worthy may proceed."

"Sounds easy enough," Rhea scoffed, though her eyes betrayed her nerves.

"Let's focus," Kael said, his analytical mind already strategizing. "We'll face these trials as a team. Together."

The shimmering barrier flickered, revealing three separate paths, each labeled with ancient symbols.

"Choose wisely," the voice warned. "Once a path is chosen, it cannot be changed."

"Which one do we take?" Elara asked, her gaze flicking between the paths.

Canila studied the symbols, feeling the weight of the decision pressing on him. "We should split up. Each trial is likely designed to test different strengths. Braxus and I can take the path of strength. Freya and Fynn can handle wisdom. Kael and Rhea, you two should tackle the courage trial."

"No way am I letting you and Braxus go alone!" Rhea exclaimed. "Strength isn't just about brawn; it requires strategy."

Canila considered her words. "Alright, then. We'll go together in pairs, but we need to stay focused. We can't afford to fail."

"Then let's make it happen," Kael said, determination gleaming in his eyes.

"Split up and regroup here in one hour," Canila instructed. "Be careful."

As they nodded in agreement, Canila felt a rush of adrenaline. The time for action was upon them. He turned to Braxus, ready to tackle the path ahead.

Path of Strength

As Canila and Braxus stepped into the path of strength, the atmosphere shifted. The chamber around them morphed, revealing a vast arena filled with towering stone pillars and deep chasms. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and in the center, a colossal creature emerged—a hulking behemoth with scales like steel and eyes that burned with fury.

"Prepare yourself!" Canila shouted, drawing his sword.

Braxus hefted his axe, the gleam of determination lighting his face. "This thing won't know what hit it!"

The behemoth charged, shaking the ground with each step. Canila and Braxus leaped into action, dodging its powerful strikes. The creature roared, sending a shockwave that nearly knocked them off their feet.

As the behemoth swung its massive arm, Canila ducked just in time, feeling the rush of air as it missed him by inches. "We need to focus on its weak points!" Canila shouted, glancing at Braxus.

"Got it!" Braxus charged forward, aiming for the creature's exposed underbelly. With a powerful swing of his axe, he struck true, sending the beast staggering back.

"Now, Canila!" Braxus called.

With a fierce shout, Canila unleashed a flurry of strikes, each blow fueled by the adrenaline coursing through his veins. The behemoth roared in pain, its scales cracking under the force of their combined attacks.

But just as victory seemed within reach, the creature let out a deafening roar, summoning dark tendrils from the shadows. They coiled around Canila and Braxus, dragging them toward the ground.

"Fight it!" Canila grunted, struggling against the restraints. "We can't give in!"

Braxus's muscles strained as he fought against the tendrils. "I won't let it take us down!"

Together, they summoned their strength, breaking free from the darkness. The behemoth faltered, giving them the opening they needed.

"Now, Braxus! Finish it!" Canila shouted.

With a final, devastating blow, Braxus brought his axe down upon the creature, shattering its defenses. The behemoth let out one last roar before collapsing, disintegrating into shadow.

As the echoes of the beast faded, a beam of light illuminated a pedestal in the center of the arena. Canila and Braxus exchanged triumphant glances.

"We did it!" Braxus exclaimed, catching his breath.

Canila approached the pedestal, where a new weapon awaited—a gauntlet infused with energy.

Path of Wisdom

Meanwhile, in the wisdom trial, Freya and Fynn stood before a series of ethereal, floating platforms. Each platform displayed a riddle, glowing softly with an aura of mystery.

"This is interesting," Fynn said, scanning the first riddle. "What has keys but can't open locks?"

Freya thought for a moment. "A piano!"

As she answered, the platform shimmered, solidifying beneath their feet. They moved to the next platform, where a new riddle awaited.

"What can travel around the world while staying in a corner?" Fynn read aloud.

Freya's brow furrowed in concentration. "A stamp!"

With each correct answer, they made their way through the trial, but the questions grew increasingly challenging.

"What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years?"

Freya frowned, racking her brain. "I know this one… It's the letter 'M'!"

The final platform glowed brightly, signaling their completion of the trial. As they stepped onto it, a burst of light engulfed them, revealing an ancient tome floating in the air.

Path of Courage

On the courage trial, Kael and Rhea faced a series of illusions, each more terrifying than the last. Shadows twisted into the forms of their greatest fears, taunting them as they navigated the dark landscape.

Kael clenched his fists, forcing himself to stand firm against the phantom of failure that loomed before him. "I won't let you control me!" he declared.

"Don't give in!" Rhea shouted, facing her own fear—visions of loss and betrayal.
