Chapter 39 - Marked

I excuse myself from the table, giving Damien's hand a reassuring squeeze as I stand up. He watches me go, his gaze intense, and then nods to Michael. I almost sigh, but I know Damien's just being protective. 

Michael's silent, ever-present shadow trails behind me as I make my way to the ladies' room, but I know he'll wait just outside. I smile a little to myself at the thought.

Damien's tendency to guard me like a precious jewel is overwhelming at times, but somehow… it's also grounding.

Inside, the bathroom is quiet, with low lighting that gives everything a soft glow. I wash my hands, glancing at my reflection, and run a hand through my hair. I'm still adjusting to this new confidence, this version of myself that Damien brings out. It feels foreign sometimes, yet it's exhilarating.
