Chapter 29 - Departure

The day had finally come for us to leave Arcanhaven, the grand capital of the kingdom, and make our journey back to Noctisveil, our home in the southern part of the Silvershadow Province. The royal city, with its towering spires and bustling streets, had been our temporary residence since the ceremony, but now it was time to return to the mystic forests of our own land.

As we prepared to depart, the Shadowstar family gathered in front of our temporary residence, a regal estate provided for us during our stay in the capital. The early morning sun cast a golden hue over the cobblestone streets, and the air was filled with the scent of dew and fresh leaves. Several attendants were loading the last of our belongings into the sleek, silver carriages emblazoned with the Shadowstar crest, a silver star against a black backdrop.

Father, Duke Alaric, stood at the forefront, overseeing the preparations with his usual calm authority. His gaze swept over the carriages, ensuring everything was in place. Mother, Duchess Selene, was beside him, her black hair catching the sunlight as she spoke with a few servants, ensuring every detail was attended to.

Astor, as usual, was bouncing with energy. He darted from one side of the courtyard to the other, curiously inspecting the carriages and occasionally pestering the knights who were assigned to escort us back home. Despite his boundless energy, he was trying his best to contain his excitement, knowing our parents wouldn't tolerate any trouble this morning.

I, on the other hand, stood quietly beside Astor, lost in thought. The ceremony had changed everything. Astor and I had both awakened with S-grade affinities—an event that had sent ripples through the kingdom's political landscape. Now, as we left Arcanhaven, I couldn't help but think about the implications for our family. Two S-grades in the Shadowstar family. Our family's power had undeniably grown, but with that power came new dangers, new responsibilities.

The horses neighed softly as they were hitched to the carriages, their glossy black coats gleaming in the morning light. The knights, clad in polished armor bearing the insignia of our house, mounted their steeds, ready to escort us through the winding roads back to Silvershadow.

"Nyx! Astor! It's time to go," Mother called out, her voice gentle but firm.

Astor gave one last look around, then bounded over to the carriage where Mother and Father were already climbing in. I followed at a slower pace, my mind still swimming with thoughts of what awaited us back in Noctisveil.

Once we were all seated, the carriage jolted slightly as it began to move, the sound of hooves clattering against the cobblestones filling the air. The streets of Arcanhaven began to fade behind us, the grand towers and bustling marketplaces gradually replaced by the quieter, rolling countryside. I gazed out of the window, watching as the scenery changed from the manicured gardens and stone buildings of the capital to the dense, shadowy forests of the Silvershadow Province.

There was something comforting about the forest—the way the trees seemed to embrace the road, the dark canopy above filtering the sunlight into soft beams that illuminated the path ahead. Noctisveil was a place of mystery and quiet strength, much like our family. Unlike the hustle and politics of Arcanhaven, it was a place where we could be ourselves, where the power of the Shadowstar family was felt not through words but through the very essence of the land.

As the journey continued, the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the road. The closer we got to Noctisveil, the more I felt the weight of our family's legacy pressing down on me. The carriage rumbled forward, and the dark, familiar outline of Noctisveil's towering walls came into view. It was time to return home, but this time, things would never be the same.

The carriage rolled smoothly over the cobblestone streets, lined with the grandiose architecture of the capital, but Nyx's thoughts were elsewhere, swirling with the implications of their new abilities.

Astor, ever the exuberant one, leaned closer to Nyx, a broad grin stretching across his face. "Can you believe it? We're going home as S-Grade! That's amazing!" His eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, his voice a blend of disbelief and pride.

"Yeah," Nyx replied, his tone more measured. "But it also means there will be a lot of eyes on us. Especially on you and me."

Their mother, Duchess Selene, sat across from them, her expression a mix of pride and concern. "Boys, remember to carry yourselves with dignity. You are now representatives of House Shadowstar, and your actions reflect upon our family."

Their father, Duke Alaric, nodded in agreement. "The ceremony was only the beginning. With your new grades and affinities, our family's reputation has been solidified, but it also comes with expectations. Stay focused and disciplined."

As they made their way toward Noctisveil, the grand capital of their duchy, Nyx looked out the window, watching the landscape transform from the bustling cityscape of Arcanhaven to the lush greenery of the countryside. The anticipation of returning home filled the air, but the weight of their newfound powers and responsibilities loomed heavily on his mind.

"Do you think Grandma and Grandpa will be proud?" Astor asked, breaking Nyx's train of thought.

"I hope so," Nyx said, glancing back at his brother. "But I also hope they understand how serious this is. We can't let it get to our heads."

Astor shrugged, the sparkle of mischief in his eyes. "I think we'll be fine. Besides, we're going to show everyone how great we are!"

As the carriage approached the gates of Noctisveil, a sense of pride welled within Nyx. This was their home, the place where they would learn to harness their abilities and fulfill their destinies. The towering spires of their family estate came into view, and with it, a new chapter awaited them—one filled with challenges, expectations, and the promise of greatness.
