Prologue
"No!" A loud scream tore out of Adelaide's lips as she woke up from her nightmare.
Just as usual, it is one of her precognitive dreams. This time, she dreamt of her mother dying, breathing her last right in her hands.
Unable to think of anything aside from her mother, she dashed out of her room and headed to the woods where her mother always practiced her spells.
Being the daughter of a witch, she has to stay hidden with her mother in this forest. According to the stories told to her by her mother, witches were known as evil, hence avoided like the plague by others.
"Mama..." Adelaide's voice cracked as she watched her mother struggle in her own pool of blood.
It was exactly what she saw in her dream.
She hurried to her mother before placing her hand on the bleeding spot. "Mama, you can't die on me. Please survive this. You said you could heal yourself, do so or teach me how to do it."
"My Adelaide, you don't have to bother saving me. It is time for me to leave," her mother began weakly, coughing out blood. "Before I die, I want to tell you something I have kept hidden from you."
Disappointed, Adelaide spoke up, "Mama, stop talking. You are bleeding too much. Also, I am no longer curious about anything. I don't want to know anything unless you heal yourself or teach me how to do it."
Her mother chuckled dryly at her adamancy. She couldn't have asked for more except her beautiful daughter, a perfect blend of herself and her lover, King Woodshin of the Faes.
"You aren't a witch, Adelaide. You are a Hybrid, known for centuries as the forbidden breed," she continued, confusing Adelaide. "You are a fae whose mother is a witch. You are the daughter of King Woodshin. Don't ever forget you are a fae."
"Mama—"
"You must hide your identity as a witch and make sure to avoid the Beast. Avoid Beasts as if they are a plague..."
The woman's voice trailed off as her breath seemed to stop. Adelaide felt time freeze as she felt the coldness of her mother's body.
She let her tears flow freely as she stared at the woman who single-handedly raised her with love passed out without being able to save her.
"Mama..." more tears ran down her face as she shook the woman's body, hoping she would wake up.
"Princess Adelaide, it is time you return home. Your father, King Woodshine, wants you back home."
Adelaide raised her gaze to look at the owner of the unfamiliar voice. "Tell your king..." her voice trailed off as she remembered her mother's words. "Go tell your king that I would return back home after I bury my mother."
"I would wait for you to bury her and say your final goodbye to her, Princess Adelaide Woodshine."
