At this moment, Diancie emerged from the house, holding a broom in its hand. "Let me explain," it said.
It turned out that Diancie had already interrogated the two Farfetch'd before Angie returned home.
The two Farfetch'd originally lived in the mountains to the northwest. However, a sudden blizzard forced them to flee and seek refuge elsewhere.
During their escape, they lost their precious leeks.
For Farfetch'd, their leek is incredibly important, akin to the log for Komala, the stick for Delphox, or the spoons for Alakazam.
After wandering for a while, the two Farfetch'd arrived at the warm climate of the Nebel Plateau, where they happened to discover Angie's vegetable garden.
When they saw the garden full of giant leeks, they were overjoyed. They decided to search for one to replace the leeks they had lost.
However, finding a leek that truly suited them wasn't easy. They had to physically test each one to feel if it was right. As a result, they pulled out leek after leek, yet none were satisfactory.
This led to the disastrous scene Angie and the others witnessed yesterday.
Since they hadn't found a suitable leek yesterday, the Farfetch'd returned today to continue their search, only to walk straight into an ambush.
After hearing Diancie's explanation, Angie asked, "Do you know that the vegetable garden belongs to someone and that the leeks in it are owned by someone?"
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
The two Farfetch'd nodded, indicating that they were aware.
"If you knew, why did you take them without permission? Don't you realize that's stealing and that it's wrong?" Angie pressed.
"Farfetch'd~"
"Farfetch'd~"
The two Farfetch'd exchanged glances. What was wrong? Wasn't it all about whoever could take something first? Back in the mountains, other Pokémon often stole the leeks they grew too!
Having spent their lives in the wild, the Farfetch'd were used to competing with other Pokémon for territory and food. Their way of thinking was naturally different from that of the Pokémon living on the Nebel Plateau.
Angie couldn't blame them from a human perspective, as their harsh environment had shaped their behavior.
"So now that you've failed to take the leeks and have been captured by me, what are you planning to do next?" Angie asked.
The two Farfetch'd raised their heads defiantly, their expressions unbothered.
"Farfetch'd~"
Do whatever you want!
"Farfetch'd~"
Whatever happens, happens.
After Diancie translated their response, Angie said, "Alright, you said it yourselves. In that case, I'll punish you! You'll have to replant all the leeks you destroyed. While you're doing that, if you find one that suits you, it's yours to keep."
The two Farfetch'd froze, then looked at Angie in disbelief.
"What? Don't want to?" Angie asked with a smile.
"Farfetch'd~"
Are you serious?
The male Farfetch'd asked hesitantly.
"Of course. Why would I lie to you?" Angie nodded.
The Farfetch'd tilted their heads, staring at Angie with a peculiar expression.
"What now?" Angie asked, half amused and half exasperated.
The female Farfetch'd replied.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~" *
You're such a strange person.
They were prisoners! Prisoners were supposed to work without any rewards!
But Angie's next words surprised them even more.
Angie said, "By the way, if you do a good job with the leeks, I can also provide you with food and a place to stay."
The male Farfetch'd asked cautiously.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
Are you really not lying to us?
Could there really be such a good deal? They'd gladly work forever for that! They were experts at growing leeks, after all.
They remembered the leeks they had carefully cultivated in their mountain home, only to see everything destroyed by a terrifying blizzard.
"I'm not lying. What would I gain from deceiving you?" Angie replied with a laugh. "Just tell me, do you agree or not?"
The two Farfetch'd exchanged glances, then nodded at Angie.
"Farfetch'd~"
Fine.
"Farfetch'd~"
Alright.
The moment they agreed, Angie heard a notification from the system, indicating the task was complete.
Indeed, wild Pokémon would never submit—unless offered food and shelter.
"Alright then," Angie said. "I'll untie you now. Don't even think about running away."
The Farfetch'd were indignant, looking offended.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
We already agreed. We won't go back on our word!
The other Farfetch'd chimed in.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
Exactly! You're insulting us by saying that.
While untying them, Angie apologized. "Alright, alright. My bad. I'm sorry."
As soon as the ropes were off, Angie heard their stomachs growling loudly.
Angie chuckled. "Hungry?"
The two Farfetch'd nodded. They hadn't eaten for an entire day and night.
"Want to eat something here?" Angie asked.
"Farfetch'd~"
Can we?
Refusing wasn't an option. Their tough lives in the wild had taught them to never pass up a chance to eat.
"Of course," Angie nodded.
The Farfetch'd agreed to stay for lunch, but not before shooting a glance at the Croconaw, Quilladin, and Dugtrio brothers nearby.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
If we weren't starving and weak, we wouldn't have lost to you!
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
Exactly!
Quilladin, with its short temper, immediately shouted.
"Quilladin~ Quilladin~"
If you've got guts, let's battle after lunch!
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
A battle it is!
"Farfetch'd~"
Just you wait.
Watching the Pokémon exchange challenges, Angie shook his head with a smile.
Because the large quantity of leeks pulled out by the Farfetch'd yesterday left him with more than enough, Angie decided to make a few leek dishes for lunch today. Fortunately, no one in the household disliked leeks.
"Munchlax, Drizzile, come here! Today, I'll teach you some new recipes," Angie called out to the two Pokémon.
"Munchlax~!"
"Drizzile~!"
Munchlax and Drizzile were overjoyed, quickly changing into their kitchen attire and following Angie into the kitchen eagerly.
The first dish Angie planned to make was scrambled eggs with leeks.
"Munchlax, can you crack a few eggs and whisk them for me?" Angie asked.
"Munchlax~!"
Of course!
Munchlax waddled over to the refrigerator, retrieved some eggs, and started working diligently.
"Drizzile, can you wash more leeks for me?" Angie asked next.
"Drizzile~!"
Drizzile gave Angie a thumbs-up and winked at him. Angie returned the thumbs-up with a smile. Motivated by the response, Drizzile happily carried over a bundle of leeks, deftly trimming and washing them.
Meanwhile, Angie busied himself preparing the seasonings and other ingredients needed for the dishes.
In addition to scrambled eggs with leeks, Angie planned to make stir-fried pork belly with leeks, leek-braised tofu, and a spicy leek salad.
Oh, right! He suddenly remembered the lamb he'd bought at the supermarket a few days ago. On a whim, he decided to add stir-fried lamb with leeks to the menu.
The tofu for the leek-braised tofu was homemade. Angie had bought soybeans and made the tofu himself because tofu of this type simply wasn't available in the Kalos region.
No, to be precise, the tofu sold there wasn't the kind Angie craved. Kalos sold varieties like Japanese tofu or fish tofu.
Japanese tofu was made from eggs, while fish tofu was made from fish meat.
The tofu Angie made, however, was either acid-set tofu or brine tofu. Acid-set tofu, being softer and smoother, was also called silken tofu, while brine tofu, firmer and coarser in texture, was commonly known as firm tofu. Firm tofu was prized for its rich bean flavor.
Angie didn't use machines to make the tofu; he made it entirely by hand. As a result, Munchlax had once played the role of a "milling donkey."
Of course, Munchlax was happy to help, as it learned another method to create delicious food.
Everyone in Angie's household adored tofu.
Angie and Munchlax enjoyed both types of tofu. Diancie preferred firm tofu, while Drizzile was fond of silken tofu.
As for Komala, nobody knew its preference because it ate both types equally without expressing a preference.
The leeks grown in Angie's garden were exceptionally fragrant, their robust aroma gradually spreading from the kitchen.
The alluring smell was so powerful that the two Farfetch'd couldn't help twitching their noses as their mouths watered uncontrollably.
The female Farfetch'd finally gave in and gently tugged on Diancie's arm.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
What's that human making? It smells amazing.
Diancie, feigning mystery, teased, "You'll find out soon enough. By the way, his name is Angie. He's the master of the Nebel Plateau. You can call him Angie."
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
Alright, I get it. Angie, huh.
The female Farfetch'd nodded before she and the male Farfetch'd both turned their eyes toward the kitchen, staring intently.
Diancie, having other matters to attend to, left the hall. This left the two Farfetch'd alone with a snoozing Komala.
The tantalizing aroma was too much to resist. Eventually, the female Farfetch'd couldn't help but sneak over to the kitchen door, peeking inside with her wing gripping the door frame.
Soon, Angie noticed the female Farfetch'd and asked with a smile, "What's wrong? Feeling really hungry?"
The female Farfetch'd nodded.
"Farfetch'd~"
What are you making? It smells amazing.
Unfortunately, Angie couldn't understand her, and with the kitchen filled with the crackling sounds of cooking, he didn't respond.
Munchlax and Drizzile, meanwhile, were fully engrossed in watching Angie cook and listening to his tips on the finer details of cooking. Neither of them paid attention to the Farfetch'd's question.
With no one answering her, the Farfetch'd quietly held onto the doorframe, watching silently.
While handling the mutton, Angie suddenly thought of something.
Nebel Plateau, aside from its vast waterways, had expansive grasslands. So why wasn't he raising cattle and sheep? Not only would it provide income, but it would also make getting fresh meat more convenient!
As he cooked, he made a mental note of this plan.
Soon, the meal was ready. Munchlax and Drizzile carried the dishes to the table, and the family of five, joined by the two Farfetch'd, sat around to eat.
(Note: Normally, other employee Pokémon don't have lunch at Angie's home. Their meals come from their salaries—Pokéblocks, cookies, and the like. Otherwise, cooking three meals a day for everyone would be far too exhausting.)
"Come on, dig in while it's hot," Angie said, inviting the two Farfetch'd.
The Farfetch'd couldn't wait any longer. As soon as Angie finished speaking, they grabbed spoons and began devouring the food.
Being fond of growing leeks, their favorite food naturally included leeks. They were instantly won over by Angie's cooking.
Lunch ended quickly, with no leftovers on the table. The two Farfetch'd had eaten the most.
Watching the pair slump in their chairs, their bellies round and full, Angie laughed and asked, "So, how was it? Tasty?"
The two Farfetch'd nodded without hesitation.
"Would you like to stay here and work? That way, you can always eat food like this," Angie continued.
Once again, the Farfetch'd nodded without hesitation.
"Well then, you'll have to grow leeks properly. If you don't, I won't keep you here," Angie said, beginning his negotiations.
"Farfetch'd!"
"Farfetch'd!"
Hearing this, determination burned in their eyes.
We have to stay. We must live a life without worrying about food or shelter!
Seeing this, Angie nodded in satisfaction.
After lunch, Angie took the two Farfetch'd to the employee dormitory.
At the moment, the other Pokémon were gathered in the living room watching TV. The TV had just been installed and was still a novelty, so they spent all their free time gathered around it.
"Everyone!" Angie clapped his hands, and the Pokémon turned to look at him. "These two are new arrivals to Nebel Plateau—Farfetch'd. From now on, please take good care of them. If they don't know something, help them out."
The Pokémon at Nebel Plateau were always enthusiastic. Upon hearing Angie's words, they stopped watching TV and surrounded the two Farfetch'd, chattering as they introduced Nebel Plateau to them.
Only Croconaw and Quilladin stood off to the side, visibly displeased.
The two Farfetch'd, unaccustomed to such enthusiasm, were flustered and unsure of what to do. Angie thought they must be sweating bullets by now.
After watching for a while, Angie turned to Delphox, Greninja, and Chesnaught. "Please guide the Farfetch'd from now on. Their previous environment is very different from here, so some of their habits will be different from ours. Be patient and accommodating."
"Delphox~!"
"Greninja~!"
"Chesnaught~!"
The three Pokémon nodded. As the guardians of Nebel Plateau, they felt a responsibility to ensure every Pokémon could integrate into this big family.
After everyone had introduced themselves, Angie took the Farfetch'd to choose their living quarters.
Looking at the array of cozy, well-decorated rooms, the male Farfetch'd hesitated and asked.
"Farfetch'd~ Farfetch'd~"
Are these really for us?
