Sierra stood outside her home, taking in the familiar view with a mix of pride and excitement. The house, modest yet welcoming, was in a quiet neighbourhood.
Its exterior had charm, with a neatly trimmed lawn stretching out from the front porch. The porch was adorned with various potted plants, their greenery adding a splash of colour against the house's muted tones.
Inside, the living room greeted visitors with its warm, inviting atmosphere. It was comfortably furnished with a soft sofa and a coffee table piled with neatly stacked books and magazines. Next to the living room was a small, functional kitchen, equipped with modern appliances and plenty of storage space. A small dining area was nearby.
The house had four uniquely decorated bedrooms, each offering a peaceful retreat. The master bedroom was spacious, with a large window overlooking the
backyard, letting natural light flood the room. The other bedrooms were cosy and well-furnished, with Sierra and her two siblings each having their own rooms. When guests visited, Sierra often slept with her younger sister, Nadia.
One of the highlights of Sierra's home was the back garden—a peaceful oasis that seemed almost magical in its calm and beauty. Blooming flowers of various colours lined the edges, their petals swaying gently in the breeze.
A lush green lawn stretched out in the centre, perfect for barefoot walks or relaxing on sunny afternoons. In one corner, a small vegetable patch thrived, with rows of tomatoes, herbs, and leafy greens lovingly cared for by Sierra's mother. Nearby, a couple of fruit trees provided shade and sometimes bore the fruits of Sierra's childhood memories.
The family had weekly barbecue evenings in the garden, which were more than just about food; they were a tradition for making lasting memories, strengthen-
ing their bonds, and celebrating the simple joys of life together.
The neighbourhood was friendly and close-knit, with neighbours often chatting over fences, kids playing together in the street and park, and occasional com-
munity gatherings. It was a place where one felt safe and welcome.
Sierra's heart raced with excitement and pride as she pulled the medal from her backpack. She eagerly imagined the thrilled looks on her family's faces when
they saw her achievement. She knew they would celebrate her effort and courage, no matter the outcome of the match.
With a confident smile, she stepped onto the threshold of her home, medal in hand. But her smile faded when she saw the door was slightly open.
"Why is the door open?" Sierra muttered, her excitement giving way to unease. Despite her instincts urging caution, she pushed the door open further and stepped inside.
The scene that greeted her was a devastating blow. The once-tidy living room was now a chaotic mess. Furniture was overturned, and cushions and belongings were scattered across the floor. The air was thick with an unsettling silence, broken only by the faint sound of her breathing.
"Mom? Dad?" she called hesitantly, her voice trembling. There was no response.
Worry gnawed at her as she moved through the room, stepping over fallen objects and avoiding broken fragments. Her heart pounded with questions. What had happened? Where was her family?
A chill of dread overcame her as she noticed a trail of blood. She gasped loudly, her footsteps hesitant and slow as she followed the path. She reached a door and
paused, taking a deep breath to steady herself. With trembling hands, she turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.
What Sierra saw in the garden was a scene of unspeakable horror. Her family lay bloodied on the ground, their bodies arranged in a row from her father to the youngest.
"NO!" she cried, her voice breaking with fear, as she rushed to the lifeless bodies. The medal fell from her hand and clattered to the ground. She knelt beside her
father, his once strong and comforting presence now gone.
Sierra reached out to touch his cold cheek, hoping for warmth that would never return. Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision. His black hair and
handsome features were now still and silent.
"Dad," she whispered brokenly, her voice barely audible. Memories of his laughter at family dinners, his comforting embrace, and his steady guidance flooded
her mind. The ache in her chest deepened, and the reality of his absence pulled her into despair.
She moved towards her mother, her beautiful mother with a kind heart. Her mother's warm hugs and comforting presence had always been a haven. Now, those arms lay still at her sides, her red curly hair spread beneath her, a stark contrast to the green grass. Sierra's tears mingled with the red dew on the grass as she whispered, "Mum, please wake up. Please."
Each word was a plea, a desperate hope that this nightmare would end and that her mother's gentle touch would comfort her again. But there was only silence, heavy with the weight of irreparable loss. Sierra brushed a strand of her mother's hair from her face, hoping to feel warmth, but her body was cold.
Next, she reached her brother, her greatest supporter and protector, now silent and motionless. His red hair, like their mother's, was a bit messy, as though he had
fought with their killer.
"No, this can't be real," she begged softly, grasping his cold hand, yearning for warmth and life to return.
Lastly, she crawled to her younger sister, whose life had been taken far too soon. Her black curls framed her delicate features, usually tied with colourful ribbons.
"Why did this happen?" Sierra choked on the question, her voice cracking with sorrow. "Why did they have to leave me?"
The world around her remained silent, offering no comfort or explanation. Only the soft rustling of leaves could be heard.
In that moment of deep sorrow, Sierra felt the weight of a future without her family, a future she could not bear to face alone.
Every memory, every touch, every word they had shared echoed in her mind, deepening the emptiness left by their absence.
She wept not only for their deaths but for the life they would never share again, for the broken dreams and the love now forever unspoken.
"Who did this to them?" she cried out.
"What happened here?" a woman's voice asked from somewhere nearby.
"Why did they take my family's lives?" Sierra whispered before collapsing into unconsciousness.
