Chapter 8 - Scroll 8: A Light Within Shadow

As a deep hatred, never before felt began to fester in Urdn'Varn's heart, the vary air itself became suffocating as his heart was consumed by rage and grief.

As Urdn'Varn rose two his feet, he let out a draconic roar, causing lightning and thunder echo throughout the temple, shaking it's very foundation. As he stormed his way out of the castle, a furious cry filled with the pain of betrayal, roared throughout the lands as the Lightning.

For days, he wandered aimlessly though the forest, feeling the sting of the temple's betrayal gnawing at him, eating away at his heart. Each night, the weight of his grief pressed heavier on his soul, as the light of the moon reminded him of everything that was taken from. He spent hours staring up at the moon, praying to Selûne, begging her for an answer to why she would let this happen, and why she wouldn't protect his mother, one of her most loyal followers..

But his prayers were never answered.

By day he cowered in the shadows, hiding from the light that now felt like a mortal enemy, as the very site of day grew to be something he would hate.

His kobold nature now made the sunlight unbearable, but what was even more unbearable, was the emptiness he felt deep inside his heart, knowing he had forever lost everything that he once held dear to him...

His Mother, His Home, and now His Faith.

As darkness fell once more, something in the air began to change.

Urdn'Varn could hear whispers floating on the evening breeze, soft at first but growing louder with each passing night. At first the words felt cold, and sometimes almost cruel.. yet they carried an understanding for his pain, offering a comfort that Urdn'Varn had not felt since the loss of his mother.

At first, he resisted, unsure if the whispers were real or simply the manifestation of his now shattering mind. But the words knew his pain like no other, it spoke to his anger, and offered solace, an end to his pain...

And so, driven by a need for purpose and revenge, Urdn'Varn followed the voices deeper into the woods, through dense trees and past long forgotten ruins, until he finally reached a cavern hidden from the guise of others. The whispers beckoned him into the mouth of the cave, where an eerie purple light danced within the shadows.

The air was cold inside the cave, and as Urdn'Varn stepped further into the gloom, he felt a powerful presence watching him.

From the shadows, two glowing eyes stared at him, their light reminiscent of the pale moon. And then, he heard the voice once more, more clearly than ever before.

It was a calm, soft, yet chilling sound that seeped deep into his very bones..

and suddenly he knew, It was the very voice of the Nightsinger herself;

Lady Shar, the goddess of darkness and loss.

"Come closer, little one, you have no need to fear me.." Shar's voice cooed from the shadows. "I have seen your suffering, your pain, caused by my sister's betrayal.

The Selûnites cast you aside, forced your hand against your own mother, and left you to bear the weight of that pain all alone..

But fret not little one.. I understand, I feel your pain, I see the cause for darkness deep within your heart. You my child are not alone, not anymore."

Urdn'Varn stood there frozen, torn between fear and intrigue. Shar's voice was soothing, almost seductive, and she spoke with purpose, and with a promise;

a promise of vengeance, power, and a release from his consent torment.

"Come closer, my child of the night," the voice of Shar, the Nightsinger, echoed throughout erden farms mine beckoning him to come deeper into the cave.

"I can offer you a way to ease your pain, a way to make them pay for what they did to your mother.. I can offer you Power and Vengeance!.."

Urdn'Varn trembled, torn between fear and the allure of Shar's offer. Her voice was intoxicating, a dark melody that spoke to the anger festering in his heart. "But first you must do something for me, you must prove your worth," she continued. "Deep Inside the cave, one of my servants lies injured.. Aid her, and you will find your purpose, and place amongst my army!"

Driven by madness and a desire to fill the void deep within, Urdn'Varn entered the cavern. There, beyond the dim glow of the purple light, he found himself standing in front of a massive Worg mother, her body bloodied and broken, surrounded by a litter of newborn pups. The Worg's eyes gleamed with suspicion as Urdn'Varn approached, her growls echoing through the cave. "Come no closer, or I swear to Shar, I will bite your head clean off!" She was protective of her young, expecting nothing but harm from the stranger.

Urdn'Varn stopped a few paces away and, with a calm voice, spoke. "It's alright, I am not here to harm you. Lady Shar sent me. I.. l am here to help."

The Worg mother hesitated, watching him with wary eyes. After a tense moment, she relaxed slightly, allowing Urdn'Varn to come closer. "Then tread lightly little one, I still have plenty enough strength to kill you with if needed."

As Urdn'Varn knelt beside her, whispering the ancient words of healing magic, his hands be glad to glow with the faint light of the Moon. The injured Warg waited patiently, as he tended to her wounds. Slowly, her breathing steadied, and the pain in her eyes began to fade.

As he was healing the injured warg Urdn'Varn couldn't help but feel curiosity begin to peak through his mind, and he couldn't seem to keep himself from asking her at least one question;

"These wounds, they look fresh, what.. No.. Who attacked you?" Urdn'Varn asked as he tended to her.

The Worg mother, still cautious but more trusting, finally spoke. "I was attacked... By young Selûnites. They hunted us down... and killed my mate... All for their precious goddess.. That lieing B*tch Selûne!"

Her voice was filled with sorrow and anger, with her wounds still fresh, not just on her body, but in her heart as well "They won't stop.. until we're all dead."

Hearing her story only deepened the darkness in Urdn'Varn's heart, and he told her of his own suffering, of the betrayal he faced at the hands of the Selûnite temple, and how they had forced him to kill his own mother. The Worg listened silently, her eyes reflecting an understanding that no words could convey.

"I... I am sorry," Urdn'Varn said, his voice breaking as he bowed his head. "I.. I used to be one of them... I was raised in their faith, and yet...

Selûne, she cursed my mother Syllel, turned her into a Werewolf..." Urdn'Varn stopped healing the Warg for a moment, as he felt the darkness within his mind began flooding his heart with pain. "And her High Priests... They bewitched me, and forced me to kill my own mother!" Urdn'Varn says as he wipes the tears away from his eyes.

Once the huge Worg is fully healed, she stands up slowly, her great form towering over him. She looks down at Urdn'Varn with a mixture of sympathy and curiosity. "Then you are just like us, cast aside, and betrayed... I see we have both suffered because of Selûne and her followers."

Her voice was soft now, filled with the weight of her loss. "If you truly wish to help... then you must abandon that false light;

You must embrace The Subtle Glow Of Shadows, acknowledge the power of Lady Shar's will!"

Urdn'Varn looked up at her, the realization settling in his heart. Shar had offered him a way forward, a chance to avenge not only his mother but the Worgs who had also been hunted down and killed by the Selûnite's he once called his friends and family.

It was a path full of darkness, but it was the only path that made sense to him now.

"I will," Urdn'Varn whispered, his voice filled with determination. "I have abandoned Selûne and I swear to follow Shar no matter what, I will fight for you... and for her;..

And for my mother."

As the words left his lips, the eerie purple light that had danced along the cave walls grew brighter, and Shar's voice echoed in to he back of his mind.

"Welcome, my child.. to your new home. The night is your ally now. Come and embrace my light, and Together.. we will reshape this world into a realm of subtle glow and eternal darkness."

The Worg mother, now trusting him fully, gave Urdn'Varn a solemn nod. "Good, Then.. from this day forward, you may live among me, ..with my pups. You will help us hunt and fight, and together... We will bring destruction to those Selûnite bastards!"

Urdn'Varn felt a strange sense of purpose take root within him, a new bond forming with the Worgs and the darkness that had claimed him. He would defend them with his very life, aid them in their fight, and use his knowledge of the Selûnite Faith, and the construction of their temple, to strike back at the ones who had destroyed his former life.

With a newfound resolve, Urdn'Varn turned toward the mouth of the cave, the purple light casting long shadows behind him. For now, he no longer feared the darkness;

It was now his guide, and with Lady Shar's blessing, he would ensure that the Selûnite temple paid for what they had done.
