The battlefield of a five-star hotel is two to three times larger than a standard battlefield.
This area is specifically designed for powerful trainers above the Gym Leader level. When these elite trainers engage in battle, regular battlefields cannot contain the full extent of their abilities. Hence, high-end battlefields are significantly larger than those commonly seen in parks or schools.
Additionally, the enormous battlefield is equipped with a specialized protective energy shield. When activated, this shield can withstand the full power of an Elite-level Pokémon's attacks. This measure prevents any moves from spiraling out of control during heated battles, ensuring the safety of spectators. Such mishaps were common in the early days before advancements in technology.
In high-end Pokémon battles, the viewing threshold is considerably higher. Weak spectators who attempt to watch without preparation might face severe consequences.
Inside one such grand battlefield hall, brightly illuminated, hundreds of Pokémon were released from their Poké Balls. They stood, sat, or reclined on platforms arranged in neat rows. These Pokémon were exclusively from the starter Pokémon series, including Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil, and Totodile, among others.
The selection spanned from Kanto to Galar, encompassing every starter Pokémon from these regions.
"You may choose your favorite from these Pokémon," the staff of the Breeding Association announced. "Once you've selected, take its Poké Ball to the staff at the entrance for registration. In cases where more than one person selects the same Pokémon, ownership will be determined through a one-on-one battle. Now, you may begin."
The rules of the breeder camp had been communicated in advance, so further explanation was unnecessary. With that, the young breeders surged forward.
Being the first to act meant gaining the advantage of choice. With fifty-four participants from eighteen prestigious Pokémon universities in China, each a top talent in their respective schools, the competition was fierce. More than half of the Pokémon would be chosen quickly, leaving limited options for those who hesitated.
Chris, however, was not in a rush. His approach differed from the others. The Pokémon he sought would be one he could continuously nurture, not just one for temporary use. To him, both the Pokémon's personal preferences and its potential were equally important.
Chris had already contemplated his decision when Theodore informed him about the event. Among the starters, his top priority was an Electric-type Pokémon. Unfortunately, there were no Electric-types available in the starter series.
Thus, his choice shifted to Grass-types. While Chris recognized the value of cultivating a Fire-type Pokémon in the future, he wasn't in urgent need of one. His Water-type lineup was already formidable, featuring Greninja and a red Gyarados. As such, Water-types were not a consideration unless a legendary Pokémon was available.
His Grass-type lineup, however, was lacking. Among the available Grass-types—Bulbasaur, Chikorita, Treecko, Turtwig, Snivy, Chespin, Rowlet, and Grookey—Chris preferred Bulbasaur and Grookey.
Bulbasaur's final evolution, Venusaur, could Mega Evolve and had a Gigantamax form with the exclusive move "G-Max Vine Lash." On the other hand, Grookey, with its hidden ability "Grassy Surge" and the move "Grassy Glide," was a dominant force in major tournaments. Its final evolution, Rillaboom, could Gigantamax and use its exclusive move "G-Max Drum Solo," a powerful attack that bypassed defensive abilities.
Chris weighed his options carefully as the breeders hurriedly made their selections.
Chris's second-choice Pokémon were Treecko and Snivy.
Treecko's final evolution, Sceptile, could Mega Evolve, offering incredible power and versatility. Meanwhile, Snivy had a highly sought-after hidden ability, "Contrary," which allowed it to turn stat-lowering effects into boosts, making moves like Leaf Storm devastatingly effective.
However, abilities like Snivy's "Contrary" or Rillaboom's "Grassy Surge" were rare and not guaranteed. These hidden abilities were treasures that breeders could only hope to encounter by chance. The Breeders Association seemed to have strict oversight of Pokémon distribution. Among the hundreds of Pokémon available, Grass-types accounted for a third, yet the specific Pokémon Chris wanted numbered less than fifteen altogether.
Undeterred, Chris began inspecting the Pokémon one by one, planning to head toward the first Snivy he spotted. Just as he was about to move, a commotion broke out.
"This Bulbasaur is mine!"
"I saw it first!"
"Stop arguing and let's battle! The winner takes it!"
Chris turned toward the source of the noise and saw two trainers quarreling over a Bulbasaur. Both were adamant about claiming it, and according to the Breeders Association's rules, such disputes had to be resolved through battle.
Suddenly, a third trainer jumped into the fray. "Wait, I want this Bulbasaur too! Count me in!"
The original two trainers protested loudly, unwilling to share their odds of winning. "No way! We saw it first!"
"First come, first served doesn't matter here! Let's settle it with a battle!" retorted the third trainer.
The argument drew the attention of the surrounding crowd, and soon, more trainers expressed their desire to join the battle. The competition for this particular Bulbasaur became chaotic.
Chris observed the Pokémon in question. Unlike regular Bulbasaurs, this one was enormous—twice the size of an average Bulbasaur. It exuded a faint aura, with currents of energy subtly flowing around it. Without a doubt, it was a Totem Pokémon.
"A Totem Bulbasaur?" Chris thought, puzzled. Totem Pokémon were typically rare, dominant individuals known for ruling over their habitats. It seemed odd for a Bulbasaur to possess such a status—perhaps more fitting for a Venusaur.
Regardless, the Totem Pokémon's power was undeniable. Totem Pokémon were inherently stronger than others of their kind, a symbol of dominance at their level. It was no wonder this Bulbasaur had captured the attention of so many breeders.
As the number of challengers for the Totem Bulbasaur grew, Chris made his decision. Since there were no Snivys with "Contrary" or Rillabooms with "Grassy Surge" present, his next priority was clear.
Chris stepped forward to join the competition, his goal resolute. His chosen Pokémon was the Bulbasaur!
