When Chris arrived at the breeding hut, the entrance was already packed with people. However, it wasn't just the forty classmates he had seen last night—it was over 200 students.
There were five classes in the Breeding Department, with each class having about forty students. Each group lined up, waiting for eight o'clock to enter the breeding hut and select their Pokémon eggs.
"Hey, our squad is over here," Chris felt a pat on his shoulder.
The next moment, a towering figure, two meters tall, came into view.
It was his classmate—the guy who had supported him to become the class monitor the previous night. Ahem, male classmate. Chris recalled his name—it was Mike.
"Alright," Chris followed, stepping in line behind Mike.
It was still fifteen minutes before the doors would open at 8 a.m.
Mike turned to Chris, curiosity in his voice, "So, how'd it go yesterday? Did you join Professor Theodore's research team?"
"Yeah," Chris nodded. But it was more as a collaborator, not a student.
"That's awesome!" Mike exclaimed loudly. "I heard you got top marks in the entrance exam for the Breeding Department? How did you pull that off?"
"Huh? How did you find out?" Chris didn't recall mentioning it to anyone.
"It's all over the campus forums!" Mike grinned. "After you left last night, someone posted on the campus website that you joined Professor Theodore's team even before military training started. They also posted your entrance exam results. Now you're practically a celebrity at Dragon University!"
"I just wish I could become the campus hero someday..." Mike said, eyes full of ambition.
Chris frowned, "What a hassle." No wonder he had felt so many eyes on him from unfamiliar faces.
Well, it was only a matter of time before he became well-known. Once he showcased his Shiny Kirlia and Shiny Makuhita, they'd definitely make a lasting impression on everyone at school.
The two continued chatting for a while.
Despite Mike's massive frame, he didn't seem so intimidating. In fact, he was like a child—curious about everything.
He kept bombarding Chris with questions, talking nonstop—from exam scores to international politics. If the breeding hut hadn't opened on time, Chris imagined they'd be discussing the possibility of aliens next.
Chris wasn't sure about the existence of aliens, but alien Pokémon? Definitely possible.
"Everyone, follow your squad leader and enter in an orderly fashion—one class per room," Olivia instructed from the front of the line. Today, she was dressed in a white sports suit, but her graceful figure still drew all eyes.
The five teams entered two by two, and soon it was Chris's class's turn.
Following their squad leader, Xavier, they entered the breeding hut. Everyone passed through a disinfection checkpoint before being allowed into the room where the Pokémon eggs were kept.
The room was vast and filled with hundreds of Pokémon eggs, each one unique in color. Even if two eggs had similar hues, their patterns would be completely different. Just like how you can't find two identical leaves, you won't find two identical Pokémon eggs.
Additionally, the size of the Pokémon eggs varied. Some were as small as a palm, while others were large enough to be compared to a barrel.
Regardless of size, each egg was placed in a glass container equipped with a temperature regulation mechanism, ensuring the optimal conditions for the healthiest Pokémon to hatch.
"Wow, look at that cute Pokémon egg!"
"There are so many! How do we choose? Can someone tell me what kind of Pokémon these eggs will hatch into?"
"I'm going to pick a red Pokémon egg soon. It should hatch a Fire-type Pokémon!" one of the girls exclaimed excitedly.
It's often said that two women can sound like a thousand ducks, and with over thirty girls in the class, Chris suddenly felt like he was in the middle of a bustling vegetable market.
"Alright, everyone, calm down and pick your Pokémon eggs quickly. Remember, during the observation phase, you're not allowed to touch the eggs. If you want a particular egg, just take the container off the table and come to me to register." A loud voice rose above the commotion.
Olivia's commanding presence quickly quieted the chattering girls.
They began whispering among themselves, much more subdued.
"Dude, what kind of Pokémon are you looking for? I'll help you pick one!" Mike thumped his chest confidently, as if selecting a watermelon rather than a Pokémon egg. He seemed convinced he could pick the best one.
"No need," Chris replied, picking up the nearest Pokémon egg without hesitation.
He wasn't particularly interested in these free Pokémon eggs.
After all, the Pokémon provided to students for free were unlikely to be pseudo-legendary species, and even rare Pokémon would be few and far between.
Since he hadn't learned how to distinguish Pokémon eggs and lacked any ability to see through them, there was no real difference between carefully choosing one and just picking at random.
No point in wasting time.
He grabbed the egg and walked straight over to Olivia to register.
"So soon? Not going to take a closer look?" Olivia asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No need," Chris shook his head slightly.
"Alright then," Olivia nodded before addressing the rest of the class. "The first phase of your military training will involve hatching this Pokémon egg. The first person to successfully hatch theirs will receive a reward, an item corresponding to the Pokémon's type. Once your egg hatches, report it immediately, and the second phase of training will begin."
After completing the registration, Chris left the breeding hut with the glass container holding his Pokémon egg.
As he walked back, he finally had a moment to properly inspect the egg in his hands.
It had a white base with circular spots, each spot a different color—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. Wait a minute... rainbow-colored spots?
What kind of Pokémon was associated with rainbows?
Ho-Oh?
Chris chuckled to himself. There was no way this ordinary Pokémon egg could hatch into a Ho-Oh.
Still, the thought reminded him of the Pokémon games, where eggs hatched based on the number of steps the player walked.
In those games, you didn't wait for time to pass naturally for an egg to hatch. Instead, it was tied to the steps the protagonist took. Once a certain number of steps was reached, the Pokémon would hatch.
If that logic applied here, could he speed things up by "walking" his egg around like in the games?
Chris suddenly remembered that Instructor Tang had mentioned a reward for the first person to hatch their egg.
With that in mind, he decided not to waste any time. He immediately headed for the dormitory, determined to put his plan into action.
