"I'm going to get serious and prepare for a huge wave of attacks!" Brawly looked at Chris and raised his hand to command.

"Hariyama, use Fake Out!"

The massive body of Brawly's Hariyama lunged forward, its large fan-like hands aiming straight at Kirlia.

From Chris's perspective, one slap from Hariyama was larger than Kirlia's entire body! Would Kirlia even stand a chance? Fake Out is a Normal-type move, not Fighting-type, so it wouldn't be resisted as much as other attacks.

"Kirlia, fly and use Confusion on Hariyama!"

Kirlia lifted off the ground using Confusion, sending waves of psychic energy to press down on Hariyama from above.

Though Kirlia couldn't toss Hariyama around like it had with Machoke—Hariyama's sheer weight rivaled Machoke's total strength—Kirlia could still hinder its movements.

Hariyama, realizing it couldn't reach Kirlia, still persisted. If it couldn't strike directly, it would send a gust through the air.

"Wham!" The air trembled as Hariyama swung its arm, creating a gust of wind that shot toward Kirlia like a fierce wave.

"Teleport!" Chris commanded, not willing to take any risks.

As Brawly had said, his Fighting-type Gym attracted challengers from all over the world. Many trainers strategized to counter Fighting-types, but very few succeeded in claiming the Knuckle Badge.

Chris knew Brawly had his own tricks up his sleeve.

Kirlia's figure flickered and vanished, reappearing just as a massive depression, over three meters wide, appeared in the spot where it had been moments before.

"This is practically like Gust, a Flying-type move!" Chris muttered.

"Aura Sphere!" Brawly called out confidently.

Hariyama's right hand glowed, and a light blue sphere, the size of a basketball, formed in its palm.

Chris's heart raced. "Kirlia, use Psybeam!"

It was unexpected that Hariyama knew Aura Sphere—proof of its innate ability to use aura, honed over time.

Aura Sphere never misses, making any attempt at dodging pointless.

Since evasion was futile, Chris prepared for an all-out attack, determined to see if Hariyama could withstand a battle of endurance.

Kirlia crossed its arms over its chest, and dark purple ripples of Psybeam burst forth, shooting directly toward Hariyama.

Hariyama, now like a baseball pitcher, locked its gaze on Kirlia and hurled the Aura Sphere with all its might!

For a brief moment, the glowing sphere shone as brightly as the sun, soaring through the air like a comet.

Both attacks crossed paths mid-air. Neither Kirlia nor Hariyama aimed to neutralize the other's attack; they both went straight for their opponent!

"Boom!"

"Boom!" Two simultaneous explosions rocked the battlefield.

Hariyama was pushed back by the force of Psybeam, which dealt double damage due to its Psychic-type advantage. Even with a 12-level difference, the gap couldn't prevent Hariyama from taking a serious hit.

Kirlia was enveloped in the smoke from the explosion, but the smoke was soon forcibly dispersed by Confusion, revealing it unharmed.

Fighting-type moves only deal a quarter of their usual damage to Kirlia, and while Aura Sphere normally has a base power of 80, against Kirlia, it only felt like 20.

"This is going to be tough? I'm more than happy to keep going!" Chris said with a grin. "Kirlia, Psybeam!"

Kirlia crossed its hands over its chest once more and unleashed another Psybeam.

Brawly frowned. Aura Sphere wasn't having the desired effect on Kirlia.

Comparing the damage dealt by both sides, Brawly could tell that his Hariyama was falling behind, even though Hariyama's physical strength far surpassed Kirlia's.

But with Kirlia resisting his attacks fourfold, and Hariyama taking double the damage from Psychic-type moves, it was like facing an eight-times disadvantage.

Although Hariyama was tough, it clearly didn't have eight times the stamina of Kirlia. A new strategy was needed if he wanted to win.

"Aura Sphere!" Brawly commanded again.

Hariyama formed another glowing energy sphere and hurled it.

This time, Aura Sphere and Psybeam collided, causing a massive explosion.

"Switching tactics, huh? A battle of attrition?" Chris chuckled. "Kirlia, Double Team!"

Kirlia's figure in mid-air flickered, multiplying from one into seven, surrounding Hariyama.

"Psybeam!"

All seven Kirlia moved in unison, aiming Psybeam at Hariyama, though only one of them was real. Hariyama had no way to defend itself from this barrage.

"Rest!" Brawly commanded, hoping to recover Hariyama's stamina after taking two direct hits from Psybeam. His plan was to use Rest to regain health and then strike back with Struggle.

While Kirlia didn't have Dream Eater—an ability that could instantly defeat a sleeping opponent—it didn't matter. Hariyama, now asleep, was a perfect target.

Kirlia's Psybeam burst forth again and again, landing repeated hits before Hariyama could wake up.

"Hariyama is unable to battle! Kirlia wins! Gym Leader Brawly has no remaining Pokémon, so the final winner is Trainer Chris!"

The scene around Chris shifted, and he found himself back in his luxury hotel.

"Fighting-type Pokémon are at a huge disadvantage against something that's both Fairy and Psychic. It's a real nightmare for them," Chris reflected, summarizing the battle.

He glanced down at his handheld device.

[Defeated Hariyama LV32, gained 960 experience.]

[Kirlia leveled up! Current level: 21.]

[Defeated Dewford Gym Leader Brawly and received 3200 pokédollars.]

[Brawly: Looks like you're an even bigger wave than me!]

[Brawly: Here's proof of defeating the Dewford Gym—the Knuckle Badge. Having it allows your Flash technique to upgrade into the Secret Flash technique.]

[Brawly: I'm also giving you this Bulk Up TM and some of my personal experience as a Breeder of Fighting-type Pokémon. I hope we meet again in future Pokémon tournaments. By then, I'm sure you'll be a wave that truly shakes the world!]
