Dealing with relatives had always been troublesome for young Chris. It wasn't until he was nearly forty that he managed to integrate into conversations with his uncles, express his views, and be recognized. Now, he was part of the family's discussions—and part of the trouble.

It seemed that dealing with relatives wasn't so bad after all, and he was starting to feel a bit more at ease.

It hadn't been this lively in years.

From now on, every year when he returned home for the New Year, it should stay lively for a long time.

Chris smiled, raising his glass to toast with his relatives, talking about life and his studies.

The notice from Dragon University came earlier than Chris had expected. Even before the official announcement online, the admission letter had already arrived. Chris hadn't even made it home yet, but the letter had beaten him to it.

When his parents received the news that it was from a prestigious school like Dragon University, they naturally set up two tables and invited relatives over to celebrate.

After learning that Chris had applied to Pokémon University, several uncles chipped in and gave Chris 200,000 pokedollars as a growth fund.

His parents accepted the gift.

Now, Chris had a decent amount of money, but no proper reason to give it to his parents.

Once he started school, he planned to work part-time as a "breeder" to pay them back.

His parents had no objections to Chris attending Pokémon University and becoming a Pokémon Trainer.

They had once harbored similar dreams, and perhaps because their dreams couldn't be realized, they now supported their child in achieving his.

That night, Chris didn't play any games and fell asleep early, having had a little too much to drink.

The next morning, Chris was woken up by the roosters in the yard.

After finally falling asleep again, his little cousin Levi came to him, nose running.

"Big brother, big brother, let's go fishing at the village entrance!" Levi had tied some sewing thread to a branch and came looking for Chris.

Chris retracted the fond thoughts he'd had the previous night.

Dealing with relatives, especially little kids, was still a hassle.

"Go ask Big Brother." Chris said, handing him a candy.

Levi ran off to find his Big Brother.

Once the little boy was gone, Chris slowly got out of bed.

He was planning to head back to his apartment in Redwood City in a few days. It was much quieter there.

He was just about to start packing up.

Since it was a rare trip back to his hometown, Chris decided not to start playing games right away. He'd wait until Levi and the other little kids left, avoiding any potential interruptions.

After breakfast, Chris strolled through the village and followed the river towards the mountains.

Stormclaw mountains—Though the origin of the name was long forgotten—was a place Chris vaguely remembered exploring as a child, where he used to pick snails in a creek halfway up.

If you ventured a little deeper, you could find an abandoned mine.

In the 1980s, rare ores had been discovered in the mountains, but the quantity was so small that the mine was soon abandoned.

At the entrance, you could still see old, rusted minecarts and tracks.

Chris wasn't particularly interested in the history of the mine.

He was far more curious about the Pokémon that might live there.

At the entrance of the mine, he had already spotted three Geodudes.

"In this real world fused with Pokémon, what kind of Pokémon could be here?" Chris thought, excited by the possibilities.

The mine had been untouched for years, naturally becoming a paradise for wild Pokémon—places like this were the easiest to encounter rare and powerful species.

With nothing else to do, Chris decided to explore the mine.

He walked toward the entrance.

A Geodude floated out.

Chris and the Geodude locked eyes.

"Makuhita, it's your turn!" Chris called out, throwing his Poké Ball.

"Maku~~(oˉ▽ˉo)" The small, round Pokémon charged forward, its red fists landing two quick punches with a "bang bang."

Before Geodude could react, it was knocked into the dirt, unable to battle.

Geodude: I didn't even do anything...

With Makuhita leading the way, Chris ventured deeper into the mine.

As he walked, memories flashed through his mind of the stories his parents used to tell to scare him and other children away from playing in the mine.

They said the mine was haunted by the ghost of a miner who had died in an accident.

And there was supposedly a monster with a huge mouth that would eat any disobedient children who wandered too close.

What had once been tales spun to keep children away now seemed somewhat plausible in a world fused with Pokémon.

Was the ghost of a miner actually a Ghost-type Pokémon? And the monster with a big mouth? That could easily be a reference to the Mawile he once encountered in Granite Cave.

"Kirlia, use Flash." As he ventured deeper, the light started to fade, and Chris released Kirlia to light the way.

A small sun appeared above his head, brightening the surroundings.

After walking for about an hour, Makuhita had taken out several Geodudes and Roggenrolas, but Chris still hadn't encountered any of the rare Pokémon he'd been hoping for.

That is, until he reached the mine's lowest chamber, a large open space.

"Huh?" Chris spotted something bright in the corner, glimmering under Kirlia's light.

He and Makuhita moved closer to investigate and found a pile of crystal-like transparent stones.

Holding the Dawn Ball for a closer look, Chris noticed the stones reflected light no matter where it shone.

When he touched one, it felt extremely hard. "Could this be... a Green diamond?"

Chris laughed at the thought.

A Green diamond? Here?

And if it were a Green diamond, they wouldn't be measured in carats, but in kilograms.

Could such a huge Green diamond even exist?

Unless... it was a Diancie.

Even though Chris didn't know what kind of ore it was, he wasn't about to leave empty-handed. He commanded Makuhita, "Makuhita, pick up these stones. We're taking them back."

Makuhita stepped forward to grab the largest crystal, but when it pulled, the stones around it moved too, as if the whole row of crystals were connected.

Suddenly, with a loud "bang," the wall next to the chamber ruptured. A massive head emerged from the break, staring at Chris with burning eyes.

Chris froze, trembling slightly as he looked at the creature.

"A... a Green Onix?"
