Chapter 14 - Giant Scorpion!

"The entrance to the cave ahead is where the giant scorpion and the red fruit are located," Harvey pointed out, his voice reverberating slightly against the dark, foreboding cave walls.

Laura, pulling gently on the straw in James's hand, leaned closer and whispered, "I have a bad feeling about this."

James nodded solemnly, sharing her sentiment. "I feel it too," he admitted, his intuition screaming of danger, yet an undeniable pull tugged at his core, beckoning him deeper into the cave.

"Shall we venture in?" he asked, glancing at Laura, who seemed undeterred by the ominous atmosphere.

"Absolutely," she replied without hesitation, her eyes alight with the thrill of the challenge. "What about you?"

James smiled wryly. "I'll follow, but don't expect too much from me. You're the stronger one here."

Laura smirked, her spirit undampened by the danger. "An F-level alien is nothing. I can handle it on my own; I certainly don't need help from a stinky old uncle like you," she teased playfully.

"Well, let's proceed then," Harvey murmured, with Hailey nodding in agreement as they followed behind Laura and James.

"Just stick close," Laura advised the siblings, her tone serious despite her earlier levity. "It's dangerous in here."

"We will," they assured her, their voices tinged with anxiety.

Laura flashed them a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, I'll keep us safe," she promised boldly, then led the way into the cave.

The cave was spacious enough to accommodate their group comfortably. The stone walls were draped with tough, brown vines that felt as hard as steel when James tested their strength with a curious tug.

"We're nearing the lair," Harvey whispered to Laura as they ventured deeper. "Be extra cautious, Miss Luo."

Laura nodded, her grip tightening around the handle of her weapon. The prospect of encountering an F-level alien was daunting; even if it was considered low-grade, it was a formidable step up from their usual foes.

Deeper into the cave, James spotted the object of their quest. Two vibrant red fruits hung tantalizingly from a withered vine, their scent fresh and enticing.

Below the vine was a small puddle, radiating an allure that James found inexplicably compelling. He scanned the surroundings, but the infamous giant scorpion was nowhere to be seen.

As Laura moved towards the fruits, James stopped her. "Let me," he insisted, knowing that although he might lack the power to confront an F-level creature directly, Laura's strength was crucial. If she were ambushed, their mission and their lives; could be at grave risk.

Laura looked at him, understanding his concern, and nodded. "Be careful," she cautioned.

James didn't respond but focused on his approach to the vine. Step by cautious step, he advanced.

Just as he neared within ten meters of the fruit, the cave betrayed its latent danger. A dark brown vine shot from the wall, blurring as it lunged straight for James's chest with terrifying speed.

Though he was prepared, nothing could have braced him for the sheer velocity of the attack. He barely registered the motion before agony exploded in his chest. Looking down, he realized with horror that it wasn't a vine at all, but a thick, spear-like tail stinger, burrowing deep into his flesh and pumping a burning venom into his body.

"James!" Laura cried out, her voice sharp with alarm. She slammed her foot against the ground, propelling herself forward like a shadow swiftly closing the distance.

As she rushed in, James, grappling with the pain, managed to seize the tail needle that had just finished injecting him. Surprisingly, it lacked the strength he had anticipated, despite its lightning-fast strike.

Laura reached him just in time, her Nepali swords glowing with an emerald aura as they sliced through the air. With a decisive swing, she struck the tail needle, severing it cleanly. Translucent fluid gushed from the break, and the remaining half quickly retracted.

Simultaneously, a thunderous noise erupted as a colossal scorpion, over ten meters in length, burst forth from the stone wall. The creature, a lower-grade F-level beast with one of its massive pincers already broken, radiated a menacing aura, its armored shell glinting ominously under the cave's dim light.

The scorpion, furious at the intrusion, snapped its huge pincers towards them. James and Laura split up, dodging to either side as the pincers crashed down, shattering the stone beneath and sending a cloud of dust into the air.

Using the dust as cover, James dove beneath the scorpion, raising his sickle in an attempt to sever one of its leg joints. The impact sent a jarring vibration up his arm; the sickle was repelled, leaving only a deep scratch on the hard shell.

As he backflipped to safety, he noticed Laura effortlessly slicing through another of the scorpion's leg joints with her blade. "I can't even break its joints," James remarked with a rueful smile, acknowledging her superior strength.

"Just assist me," Laura responded with a grin, her eyes twinkling with the thrill of battle. She then paused, looking around. "You two too... eh? Where are you?"

"They took off when I was attacked," James explained, having kept an eye on Harvey and Hailey. He had seen them slip away quietly as soon as the scorpion appeared.

"Ah? Why would they run?" Laura's confusion was evident as she glanced around the now quiet cave.

"Who knows? Maybe they figured we couldn't handle it and decided to save their own skins," James shrugged.

Feeling a sharp pain in his chest, James glanced down at the translucent liquid oozing from his wound. He examined the substance, curious but not feeling any effects of poison. "Doesn't seem to be venom," he mused aloud, not sensing any immediate harm.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Laura asked, concern lacing her voice as she watched him.

"Yeah, I'm fine," James assured her, just as the scorpion's half-severed tail made a sweeping attack towards them.

Laura ducked under the sweeping tail, but James, caught by its motion, couldn't dodge in time. Instead of trying to escape, he grasped the tail, his expression turning determined. "Go for the legs! I'll hold him off," he shouted to Laura.

Nodding, Laura raised her swords, which spun beautifully in her hands before coming down hard on another of the scorpion's limbs.

With each strike, the scorpion's limbs broke off, spewing more fluid, as it reared up in pain. Sensing an opportunity, James unleashed his Straw Binding skill. His eyes glowed red as countless straws burst from his form, entwining the scorpion's remaining pincer and holding it aloft, stalling its deadly descent.

Together, they worked to subdue the monstrous creature, their combined efforts turning the tide of the battle.
