The roar of the avalanche was deafening, a living monster devouring everything in its path. Snow crashed around us, and I barely had time to react before Layla's weight slackened against me.
Her knees buckled, her head drooped, and my stomach dropped when I realized she'd fainted.
"Damn it, Layla," I muttered under my breath, my voice swallowed by the thunderous chaos.
I tightened my grip on her, my arms wrapping around her limp body as the world around us descended into chaos.
Panic clawed at the edges of my mind, but I shoved it down. I didn't have time for fear. My body moved on instinct, fueled by something deeper, older a power I rarely allowed myself to think about, let alone use.
The air burned in my lungs, sharp and cold, as I pushed forward, every muscle straining against the crushing snow.
