I watched Layla and Maeve interact from across the room, my jaw clenched tighter than I'd like to admit. There was something about the way Maeve leaned in close to Layla, her hand subtly brushing Layla's arm, her laugh just a little too loud.
Maeve had always been this way, as if the world was her stage and she the star everyone else orbited around. But now, seeing her setting her sights on Layla, I felt my mood drop into a familiar grumpy haze.
"Zaya, you good?" A voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I glanced to my side, where one of the other actors was eyeing me with an amused, knowing look.
I barely managed a nod, inhaling deeply to shake off the irritation simmering in my chest.
And then Nicole arrived, balancing a stack of takeout boxes with a grin that suggested she was up to something.
