Pov- Ivy
'Dang today is one beautiful day' I say to myself as I am walking back from a long day of school. 'It's been a few weeks now sense my half birthday and honestly everything feels peaceful. Weirdly so. I think that adults would describe this as the calm before the storm'
After walking for a little while I enter my house and just through my stuff in my room. I then very quietly went to the kitchen, took a cookie from the jar and then booked it out the back door. I had no real reason to do this sense mom is not home, she is taking care of the neighbor's cat while they went on vacation, but I like to practice even if it doesn't matter.
After heading out the back door, I started to go into the woods like I normally do after school. My mother often told me it was not safe for me and that I could get lost, but for some reason I can never get lost in the woods. It's like I have a map of it in my head and can never go the wrong way because of it.
As I was traveling through the woods I often sat down at random spots and looked around for two reasons. One is that I am just tired of walking. Two is that it lets me take in the greatness of the woods around me.
Anyway today, I was expecting it to be like any other day in the wood, but reality is often different than our expectations. When I was taking a sitting break, I noticed something shiny sticking out of the ground. I went over to investigate and after digging through the dirt a bit I found a wooden box with a metal outline. The outline was all rusted by time. I tried to open the box, but it was stuck and would not budge no matter how hard I tried to open it.
I eventually went to try and do what I had seen my mother do. I took the box into my hands. I climbed up a tree as far as I could. Which was not very far by the way. Once I reached the highest I could go, I threw the box on the ground as hard as I could. It landed on the floor, and I did manage to open it up and I hastily rushed to it. In my haste to get down I slipped and cut my arm on a stick that was poking out.
I looked at my arm and saw blood running down it. I then felt the pain from the injury and at that moment I ran. I left behind the strange box that I managed to open and ran. I ran and ran all the way back home. I busted through the back door and saw my mother was back and working on dinner. On seeing her I went to her, grabbed her clothes, and burst into tears from the pain.
At this point my mother turned to look at me. She could see the blood rolling down my arm, hugged me and said "It's, okay. Everything is okay." She kept hugging me and reassuring me until I stopped crying in pain. Then she said, "Okay sweetie, let's go get a band aid for your arm" With that we went to the bathroom, and she got me all patched up.
After I was all better, she looked at me sternly and said "Now young lady, due to your great maturity for being not even 5 years old, I have given you a lot of freedoms. That includes going into the woods by yourself because you said you could handle it but if you come back from the woods one more time with an injury, I will revoke that privilege. Have I made my self-clear."
The whole time I was being scolded my head was down in shame. This is the first time she has yelled at me like this, and it made my mind lock up a bit. Eventually, I looked up and said, "I am very sorry mom, I was being irresponsible and will try and be safer in the future."
With that my mother's serious face turned into a smile and rubbed my head. "I want you to know I am not mad at you Ivy; I just worry for your safety. I don't want to see you hurt." After saying that she looked at the photo of her husband and daughter for a second before turning around and heading back to cooking.
As she left, she yelled to me "Ivy, go get changed for dinner, I don't know what you did but you are filthy." I looked down at myself and nodded in agreement with her words. I started walking towards my room as I heard her yell one last time to me, "Also, do not think I did not notice the cookie missing" and with that I slammed my door shut.
The night then went like normal with me getting changed for dinner. Having dinner with mom and talking about our days. Finally, we both watched some television on the couch together.
After tv I got ready for bed. While I was tucking myself into bed, I recalled the box that got me injured in the first place. I decided to go investigate it tomorrow and I went to bed.
