The sound of thumping against the house roused the women from a restless sleep in the middle of the night. I would have liked to say that we were sleeping soundly, but each one of the women felt a knife dangling over their necks, so sleep wasn't happening.
It was almost funny that both Sunny and Elizabeth were feeling uneasy, but at the same time, I was feeling more than a little overprotective of the older woman. Sunny had already bartered for at least three more years of life, so she shouldn't have been scared.
But the trembling of Elizabeth's hand made me want to commit murder.
