The following week began quietly enough, with everyone settling back into the rhythm of classes after the energy of the cultural festival. Yet, there was a lingering buzz in the air, as though the students weren't quite ready to let go of the festival's excitement. laughter would occasionally erupt as students reminisced about memorable moments.
During lunch one day, Ryo found himself in the classroom with Hana, Saki, Mei, Alice, and Amelia, who had quickly become a regular part of the group. They'd all pushed their desks together, creating a mini round table where they could eat, talk, and joke with ease. Yuto was there, too, munching on his sandwich and nodding along as the girls chattered.
"Oh, right!" Hana piped up, clapping her hands together in excitement. "Did you all hear? Apparently, the class next door is planning some sort of sports exchange with ours. You know, friendly matches and all."
Amelia's eyes lit up. "A sports exchange? I didn't know Japanese schools did things like that. It sounds so fun!"
Ryo gave a half-smile. "It's not too intense. Just friendly competitions every now and then. Gives everyone a break from studying."
Mei raised an eyebrow, her quiet voice cutting in. "But doesn't it also mean there'll be practice sessions? With people cheering and all the usual noise?"
Hana nudged Mei playfully. "C'mon, Mei! Think of it as a good way to unwind. Besides, we can make new friends!"
Saki leaned closer to Ryo, eyes twinkling with mischief. "You know, if we end up in teams, I'm totally going to make sure we're on opposing sides. That way, I can finally beat you at something."
Ryo chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "Bring it on, Saki. But you might regret it!"
Yuto grinned, giving Ryo a light punch on the arm. "Don't get too cocky now. You might find yourself outmatched"
Later that afternoon, Takashi, the student council president, gathered a few students in the gymnasium to finalize the arrangements. Ryo found himself roped in once again, helping set up logistics with the council. Rina, the vice president, was explaining the event lineup to the gathered students.
"This exchange isn't just about sports; it's a way for everyone to bond beyond classes," she explained, her voice warm. "So let's make it enjoyable for everyone. We'll have teams for different sports: basketball, volleyball, and even a relay race. Anyone who's interested can join."
Takashi nodded in agreement. "We want this to be inclusive. Even if you're not into sports, come cheer for your friends. Participation matters more than skill here."
After the meeting, Takashi pulled Ryo aside. "Glad to have you on board, Ryo. I think everyone appreciates having you around. You seem to bring the group together."
Ryo rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed. "I don't think I do that much, really. But thanks."
When he rejoined his friends, Amelia greeted him with a thumbs-up. "Way to go, Ryo! I knew you had a knack for this stuff."
"Yeah, our little group wouldn't be the same without you," Alice chimed in, her eyes gleaming with admiration.
The others echoed their agreement, and Ryo couldn't help but feel a warmth spread in his chest. He never expected to be part of such a close-knit group, and it was a feeling he didn't realize he had been missing until now.
The day of the sports exchange was a sunny one, with students filling the gym and outdoor courts. Cheers and laughter could be heard throughout the school grounds as everyone gathered, ready to participate and support their friends.
Ryo, who had been placed on the basketball team, found himself facing off against Takashi, who was on the opposing team. Hana was on Ryo's team, bouncing with excitement as she dribbled the basketball and shot a grin at him. Mei sat on the sidelines, cheering with her usual calm demeanor, while Saki and Amelia clapped enthusiastically.
As the game began, Ryo was surprised to see Takashi giving him a challenging look. "Don't hold back, Ryo. Let's see what you've got!"
Ryo grinned back. "I was going to say the same to you!"
The game was intense, and Ryo couldn't help but get caught up in the excitement. Takashi was a formidable opponent, and their rivalry drew cheers from the crowd. Ryo's friends were especially loud, with Hana even starting a chant for him. Saki shouted teasingly from the sidelines, "Don't lose, Ryo, or I'll never let you live it down!"
With a final pass from Hana, Ryo managed to score the winning basket, and his team erupted in cheers. Takashi approached him afterward, clapping him on the back. "Nicely done, Ryo. Looks like I underestimated you."
"That makes two of us," Ryo replied, laughing.
As the day wound down, everyone gathered for refreshments, sharing stories about the games and bonding over the fun they'd had. Ryo was surrounded by his friends, laughing and joking together as they enjoyed the simple joy of friendship.
It was a day he knew he'd remember for a long time, and as he looked around at the smiling faces of his friends, he couldn't help but think that his once quiet, predictable life was becoming something far richer than he had ever imagined.
