Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Calm Before the Chaos

With the sports festival looming on the horizon, the school was buzzing with excitement. Posters were plastered on the walls, students huddled in groups planning their strategies for different events, and teachers were trying to maintain some semblance of order amidst the growing chaos. For Ryo, it was like watching a hurricane form right in front of him—and, of course, he had somehow been dragged into its eye.

"Just think of it as a chance to show off those skills you keep hiding from the rest of us," Saki teased as they walked to their next class.

"I don't have any skills," Ryo muttered, rubbing the back of his neck in exasperation.

"That's not what I heard," Saki said with a smirk, clearly enjoying his discomfort. "Word around the school is you were amazing at the last festival with Hana. People are expecting big things from you this time."

Ryo groaned. "Great. Just what I need—more attention."

"You brought this on yourself," she shot back with a shrug. "Hana can't stop talking about how much fun you guys had, and now everyone wants to see if you'll live up to the hype."

As if on cue, Hana came bounding up to them, her energy practically radiating off her. "Ryo! Saki! You're coming to the festival, right? I can't wait! It's going to be even bigger than the last one!"

"Yeah, I'm going," Ryo replied with a resigned sigh. "Not sure why, though."

Hana beamed. "Because it's going to be amazing, that's why! We're all signed up for the relay race together, so it'll be like a team effort!"

Ryo raised an eyebrow. "Wait. We?"

Saki grinned. "Yep. You, me, Hana, and Mei. We're officially a team. And just think, we'll be counting on you to bring home the win."

Ryo's eyes widened. "Why didn't anyone ask me about this?"

"We did," Saki said, her grin widening. "You weren't listening, as usual."

Ryo could feel a headache forming. Why did he always get caught up in these situations? He glanced over at Mei, who had been walking quietly beside them, and was met with her calm, soft smile.

"You'll do fine, Ryo," Mei said reassuringly. "It'll be fun, and we'll all be there together."

As usual, Mei's gentle words managed to make him feel slightly better about the whole ordeal. If nothing else, he could count on his friends to make the chaos a little more bearable.

The next few days flew by as the school prepared for the festival, and Ryo found himself reluctantly roped into practice sessions for the relay race. Hana, as always, was full of enthusiasm, dragging the others along with her energy. Saki teased Ryo mercilessly during every practice, but there was no denying that she was surprisingly competitive when it came to sports. Mei, while not the fastest runner, made up for it with her calm focus and precision.

Meanwhile, Takashi had not given up on his mission to recruit Ryo for the student council. Despite Ryo's best efforts to avoid him, Takashi would appear at the most unexpected moments, always flashing that same confident smile.

"You know, Ryo," Takashi said one afternoon as they stood by the vending machines, "I really think you'd make a great addition to the council."

Ryo sighed, pressing the button for a can of juice. "Didn't we already have this conversation?"

"We did," Takashi agreed, leaning casually against the machine. "But I'm not giving up just yet. Think of it this way—if you join, you'd have even more influence over events like the sports festival. You could make things less chaotic for yourself."

"That's not exactly convincing," Ryo muttered, grabbing his drink.

Takashi chuckled. "Alright, maybe not. But just remember—the door's always open."

As Takashi walked off, Ryo couldn't help but feel a small sense of relief. While he appreciated Takashi's persistence, the idea of joining the student council still didn't sit well with him. Besides, he already had more than enough to deal with.

The day of the festival arrived, and the school grounds were transformed into a lively, colorful scene. Booths lined the courtyard, selling food and drinks, while the various sports events took place in the large field behind the school. Students bustled around in groups, laughing and cheering, the excitement in the air palpable.

Ryo stood with his friends near the starting line for the relay race, feeling more nervous than he cared to admit. He glanced over at Hana, who was practically bouncing with excitement, while Saki stretched lazily, looking as casual as ever. Mei stood off to the side, quietly observing the scene with her usual calm demeanor.

"You ready for this?" Saki asked, nudging him with her elbow.

"Not really," Ryo admitted.

"Don't worry," Hana said, flashing him a bright smile. "We've got this!"

The whistle blew, signaling the start of the race. Hana took off like a rocket, her competitive spirit driving her forward. She handed off the baton to Saki with ease, and Saki, despite her laid-back attitude, sprinted with surprising speed. Mei was up next, and while she wasn't the fastest, her graceful movements kept them in the running.

As Ryo prepared to take the final handoff, he could feel the pressure mounting. The crowd was cheering, and he could hear people calling his name. He was supposed to bring it home for the team.

Mei handed him the baton, her soft smile giving him a sense of reassurance. "You'll do great, Ryo," she said quietly before stepping aside.

Ryo took off, the wind rushing past his ears as he sprinted toward the finish line. He could hear Hana and Saki shouting encouragement, and the adrenaline coursing through his veins pushed him to run faster. The other teams were close behind, but he wasn't about to let them catch up.

With one final burst of speed, Ryo crossed the finish line, barely ahead of the competition.

The crowd erupted in cheers, and Hana tackled him in a hug as soon as he slowed down. "You did it, Ryo! We won!"

Saki grinned, clapping him on the back. "Not bad, Councilman. Maybe you've got a future in this after all."

Ryo, still trying to catch his breath, couldn't help but laugh. Despite his initial reluctance, the victory felt good.

As they made their way toward the sidelines to rest, Ryo spotted Takashi watching from a distance, a knowing smile on his face. Ryo could almost hear his voice in his head: See? You're a natural leader.

But for now, Ryo was content with just enjoying the moment with his friends. The chaos of the festival, the teasing from Saki, the endless energy from Hana, and the quiet support of Mei—it was all part of the strange, unpredictable whirlwind that had become his life.

And despite his best efforts to avoid attention, he couldn't deny that, for once, it felt good to be a part of something.

As the day wound down and the festival came to a close, Ryo and his friends sat together under a tree, enjoying some snacks from the various booths. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm, golden light over the school grounds.

"That was fun," Mei said softly, her voice carrying a note of contentment.

"Yeah," Ryo agreed, leaning back against the tree. "It was."

Hana, still full of energy despite the long day, grinned. "I told you it would be great! We should do this more often."

Saki, ever the sarcastic one, smirked. "Careful, Hana. You might just convince Ryo to become a social butterfly."

"Not a chance," Ryo muttered, though there was a smile on his face.

As they laughed and talked, Ryo couldn't help but feel a sense of peace. The day had been chaotic, exhausting, and full of unexpected moments—but it had also been fun. And as much as he hated to admit it, he was starting to enjoy the craziness that came with being surrounded by people who cared about him.

Little did he know, the next chapter of his high school life was about to get even more complicated.
