Arin and Cassiel enter the ominous Dungeon of Mirrors, a haunting place where many mirrors adorn the walls, ceiling, and floor, creating distorted, dark reflections that flicker. The stifling environment appears to tug at their worries, bringing out long-buried memories and feelings, making every step they take feel heavy. The mirrors themselves are not static; rather, they flow like liquid, reflecting not just reflections but also uncanny visions that are designed to torture and weaken their determination.
The Reflections Hall
Arin's pulse races as they go farther because their own reflection changes, taking on the appearance of images that seem to be visions of different futures or lives. They see themselves by themselves in one mirror, their eyes vacant and blank. It's a picture of a future in which Cassiel has vanished and is lost to the never-ending cycles of failure. In a different mirror, they appear desensitized, numbed, and alone. They ruthlessly destroy friends and allies, sacrificing others to secure their own existence and turning into The Shaper itself. Arin is shaken by these images, each one bringing up the dread that they, too, may lose themselves in the struggle and turn into a person who doesn't care about anybody or anything if it means surviving.
Standing next to them, Cassiel must deal with their own flurry of images. As Cassiel stands helplessly among the devastation, unable to save anybody, they imagine a globe enveloped in flames, with citizens wailing. Cassiel appears in another mirror as an older, weathered person who, in an other universe, has given in to the same evil they aimed to combat. This Cassiel is icy, with black, ruthless eyes, and he resembles The Shaper in both appearance and disposition. Every vision exacerbates Cassiel's remorse by serving as a reminder of all the lives killed and the worlds they were unable to save.
The Conflict
Arin and Cassiel are drawn apart as their reflections become increasingly painful, both of them unable to locate the other due to the mirrors' delusions. In a desperate attempt to reach Cassiel, Arin yells for them. In an attempt to see Cassiel standing by himself, they put a hand against one of the mirrors, but all they get in return is cold glass. Arin struggles against the escalating tide of despair, feeling a wave of frustration, dread, and tiredness.
When the visions attain their zenith, Arin and Cassiel eventually cross paths in a chamber where each mirror depicts the two of them standing next to one another, facing horrors together while simultaneously displaying their damaged, scarred, and defeated selves. Arin and Cassiel had an epiphany amid the dungeon's quiet. With a shaky voice, Arin admits, "I'm afraid of what I might become if this goes on too long." I fear that since I was unable to make the proper decision, I may lose you or, worse, allow anything to happen to you.
Cassiel shares their own anxieties after being profoundly touched by Arin's vulnerability. "I've lived my entire life by myself, battling constantly and losing the people I vowed to protect. I wanted to think I had the strength to continue, However, If I'm losing myself, that's not strength. Being with you and meeting you brought back memories of what it was like to be human. However, there are moments when I worry that you will be the one cost I cannot afford.
A Strengthened Bond
The mirrors shake and the pictures inside them break as their words reverberate throughout the dungeon, as though the illusions had been shaken by their own admission of their worst regrets and fears. They come to understand that the dungeon was escalating their worries by feeding off their vulnerabilities. However, they have removed the dungeon's power by speaking their truths.
As the mirrored images break apart around them, revealing a clean way ahead, they extend their hands and clasp them together. They glance at each other at that precise time and acknowledge the power they get from one another. Arin's worry of losing their humanity and Cassiel's loneliness end up being burdens that they both bear. Their commitment to battle for one another as well as for the planet turns their love into a shield.
"No matter what happens, as long as I have you by my side, I won't lose myself," Cassiel sighs quietly in the ensuing stillness. Arin, we'll figure something out. Together.
Knowing they are each other's bulwark in the storm of a collapsing world, they move forth with their relationship restored and their resolve unwavering. The one thing that even The Shaper cannot destroy is their love, which is strong and unbreakable.
