Chapter 60 - The next few days.

[Randall's POV]

'No one around? Good.'

The safehouse was on sight. And no blue-wearing guards seemed to be nearby, fortunately.

I dashed out of my cover and ran. Then slid under the still unfixed hole of the building. And landed.

"I'd say I deserve bonus points for style, but I fumbled the landing…"

Thus, nothing.

Gotta be critical here.

"Randall?... Is that you?"

The sleepy, yet somewhat deep voice of a titan resounded from the living room. "Yeah. Farm mission went well," I answered, while strolling my way out of this room.

"I see."

"I found some clothes belonging to the bandits, though I opted to leave them there."

"Good call, I can tell Oliver about it and we shoot down two birds with a stone… Anything else that matters? And please leave the small details for tomorrow."

"Well, a guard found me while I was sneaking around."

He went from sleepy to widely awake in a matter of seconds. "Who was it?"

"Someone named Rodion. Do you know him?"

And he went back to being somewhat sleepy. "Oh, yeah. He often sleeps too much, but he's rather skilled… and prideful. Though, not the type to boast. He's too lazy for that."

A yawn left his mouth. "Anyway… You're here so I assume you managed to convince him to let you go."

I nodded.

"Great. Anyway, I'm going to sleep, so good night."

"Night."

With his ending words, he laid back on the mattress. Soon enough, the titan fell asleep.

And so did I.

… The next few days weren't exactly tranquil for me, but it wasn't as stressful as the journey to this place was. Granted, I still had to conceal myself, but at least going out without hiding my identity like an ultra paranoid maniac was possible.

I just had to be subtle. Which I made sure to be, when I had to go to a rather far away area. But before that, I faced another "challenge".

A talk.

"Sorry for yesterday's, but I was really tired…" uttered Jack, who took about fifteen minutes to get up after waking up. He hadn't left the mattress he slept on, though.

"It's fine."

"Either way, tell. How'd it go?"

"Pretty good. Besides dealing with the guard and finding the bandit armor, I had the pleasure of watching two drunk guards." My crossed legs supported a part of my body, and the wall I laid my back on sure helped for that task.

"Nicolas and Michael? Yeah, they love drinking… maybe a bit too much."

"I noticed…"

My shoulders shivered, recalling just how drunk they seemed to be. Their movements were barely stable enough for them to avoid falling down every five steps, yet their vocabulary became far clearer.

How can anyone be comfortable drinking that much? It doesn't make sense.

'Then again, very few things here make sense.'

Yeah… Maybe I need to redefine what "common sense" is.

'Or I can opt to be the only one with actual common sense in a land full of…'

Well, whatever this place is.

The information exchange continued, though it was cut off as Anne came in through the now cloth-covered hole. She greeted us calmly, and got a similar response.

"Where were you?"

"The forest southwest of here."

"The same forest that is currently being occupied by the outsider bandits?"

I observed the talk between the two purple skinned demons, along with their strangely similar mannerisms. And I ended up thinking about something.

'If I were to take the townsfolk's speech patterns for reference… Then that makes Jack's a bit of an anomaly.'

As far as I have seen, he doesn't even make the same mistakes as the others.

"I'll be heading to sleep now. But before that, Randall."

Her confident words caught my attention, which is probably all she needed.

"What if you go to fight against monsters today? Without my supervision, that is. You've already snuck in somewhere and mostly pulled off a success, so you shouldn't have any big issues."

An interesting suggestion, which I accepted.

Therefore… I wandered off and seeked out monsters to kill for most of the day. And upon spotting one, I'd use the battle to train my skills.

A particularly odd one I found was a four-armed gorilla. Unlike the three monsters I had faced by that point, this one used alchemy to fight by transforming its upper arms into something else.

For example, it transformed its arms' skin into stone whenever it launched an attack. The first time it did that, a small surge of confidence ran through my body.

Why? I could lure it to attack, dodge it and let it hit something else so that its arms would be broken… That excitement didn't last long.

The gorilla grabbed mossy plants and used them to replace the skin.

I'll admit, seeing the moss being transformed into actual flesh was nothing short of astounding.

Regardless, it fell in the end. Even with its regenerative abilities, it couldn't match my skill with the blade.

… By the time the sun disappeared from the horizon, a total of six beasts had fallen to my rapier's edge.

The next day went in a similar manner. Monster killing for the most part, but I also had to bring back some… limbs.

Limbs from an animal-class monster, of course. But why?

Well, Jack asked me to.

"Be careful when cutting the teeth, Shulsry was quite insistent on their condition," asked Jack, minutes before I left.

"Shulsry? Weren't you on bad terms with her?"

He closed his partially displeased eyes. "Yes, but she's the only alchemist in Fernbedie that can create potions, so I have no choice but to swallow my pride and work with her. It's either that or dying…"

My departure took place after he left me with that explanation, and the expedition to the outside world went mostly well.

The teeth were secured, fortunately. I knew it was an animal-class, the equivalent of a Grade 7 in human terms, because I could match its power.

A pretty successful day, I'd say.

And now, after doing all of that… Well, it is time to recover some energy.
