Chapter 37 - Suspicious Individuals

The night after Anatalia got her rank assigned to her, she went to sleep not long after eating dinner. Because it was too eye-catching to explore alone and his desire to not abruptly leave Anatalia alone, Finn decided to rest early too.

Finn was a demi-spiritual lifeform, and he also had the body of a mana beast, so he didn't need much sleep or even food, but because he wanted to relax his mental health and just enjoy food, he still indulged himself in this activity.

Finn, who was sleeping with his passive senses at alert, woke up because of unusual movement near the inn he stayed in.

He turned into his human form that was 1.9 meters tall, and still had a bluish slime-like flesh and a featureless face.

Finn could create mouths, ears, eyes, and a nose, but he didn't because he liked the appearance of this human form. One could say it was scary, and Finn, a Ghost, liked that.

With his silver ring worn on his hand, Finn brought out the cloak he had gotten from Haru. A black hooded cloak that concealed one's presence, with its effect standing out in the night.

He wore the cloak and used its hood along with pants that he had gotten Anatalia to buy beforehand.

He created webs and put them in the room he and Anatalia stayed in just in case.

Having finished preparing, Finn jumped out of the window into the shadow of the building, becoming one with the darkness.

Like every other large city, the night was still bustling with life even at midnight, but the light sources the people used didn't reach every corner.

Now one with the dark, Finn walked confidently towards where he felt the unusual movements.

Soon, he arrived in an alley not far from the inn and saw some suspicious looking figures.

'They're dressed like assassins, that's crazy suspicious.' Finn commented as he scrutinized them.

They were two currently and Finn could take them down, but he chose not to because of what they were doing.

One of the two figures was holding an orb whispering to it. Seeing this Finn had a guess. He spread his senses wider reaching every corner around the inn he stayed.

He first sensed a not so hidden presence far from the inn, but paid no heed to it for a reason.

Directly opposite the inn he stayed, he sensed another two people that were holding a similar orb. These orbs looked like they were used for communication.

With his webs lingering close to them he got the context of their conversation.

They were paying attention to the young beastfolk that just got signed and her unique mana beast, hoping they could abduct one of the two.

Finn twitched as he heard their plans. He would have attacked them immediately when he heard that, but he didn't know their true strength and he wasn't sure if they had items that'll be beneficial to them.

Based on the feel he got from the adventurers he encountered during the day, he assumed the ranks of this figure.

There were two C rank and two B rank adventurers. He didn't bother to guess their subranks. Also, they were all humans. They separated themselves into duos of one C rank and one B rank each.

'If I attack these two here, the others would become aware that something happened assuming I don't take them out fast. And the same for vice versa,' Finn thought, 'I'll just wait for them to come together.'

The masked individuals that were observing the inn signified for the others to come. The two that were near Finn decided to pass the back of the inn to meet those who were opposite.

This was the opportunity Finn was going to use.

Or so he thought.

As he trailed them, a figure appeared right in front of them.

He had short beautiful white hair, bright green eyes, was dressed in a green robe, and had a green sheathed katana in his hand.

Immediately he appeared, he smiled before disappearing once more.

That was for the usual eyes, Finn could still detect his presence, "This guy was really targeting them too."

From the start, albeit a little, Finn detected the presence of someone else that was also positioned weirdly. Because of the impression Nagic had left on him, he identified who it was.

After Nagic appeared, he soon appeared behind the C rank individual, and with his appearance, said individual fell into the embrace of death.

The B rank instantly recognized Nagic causing his eyes to turn pale.

"W-what are you doing here?" He said, arming himself with a shortsword he had on him.

Nagic didn't reply. He only moved towards his target. The B rank adventurer was able to block Nagic's attack, but that wasn't for long.

As he blocked the katana, multiple cuts appeared on his body, slowly weakening him. Before he could decide on what to do next, he felt the sword go through his stomach.

The B ranked individual slowly fell to his knees as he covered the large injury. "Why? We're even yet to do anything… W-what's an A rank doing here?"

He wanted to let out a scream to alert the surrounding people and his other companions, but before he could, a wind blade cleanly cut-off his head.

Still smiling, Nagic swooped the blood of his katana and returned it into its green sheath.

He turned his head towards a direction and moved towards there.

Finn watched all this from the shadows. "Is that guy really that strong, or are these people that weak?"

He knew the answer to this; the answer was both. Ranks aren't only determined by strength.

With his webs still in the area, Finn was still tracking the two that were left and Nagic. He watched Nagic hunt the other two through his senses while slowly taking his time to approach there.

These two already noticed something relating to their companion, so they decided to retreat using the dark streets while still being ready to engage in a battle.

Because of this, taking them down was harder compared to the previous two, but it wasn't something Nagic couldn't handle with his impeccable swordsmanship and his magic spells.

Not too far from the scene, Finn watched as Nagic killed the other B rank hunter, and kept the other C rank alive, presumably for questioning.

Upon this, Nagic turned his head from the two that were beneath him to a shadow. Then, he put one hand to his chest and the other at his back, bowing with a smile on his face.

Finn heard a voice sound directly in his head.

"Hello there… My Lord." This was Nagic's voice.

'My Lord…' Hearing that, Finn didn't panic and calmly reciprocated the communication. "Who are you?"

From the alley he was in, Nagic kept his head facing down as he replied telepathically, "I'm the proxy of the one and only god. I am here to assist you. I have been waiting for your arrival."

With his back resting on a wall, and his hands folded, Finn slowly nodded his head repeatedly.

He thought, 'What the hell?'
