Chapter 11 - A Happy Family

THE DEVIL'S PREY

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Aurora didn't see it coming. Her wheelchair jerked to a stop, and she felt herself losing balance. She tried to grab onto the table, but it was too late.

Aurora's wheelchair tipped over, and she fell to the ground with a thud. She cried out in pain and shock, her heart racing.

Leonard finally noticed what had happened and turned to look at Aurora

"Aurora, oh my goodness'!" He exclaimed.

Ivory's face was a picture of innocence as she looked at her "Oh no, Aurora! Are you okay?"

Aurora's eyes narrowed as she gazed up at Ivory, her mind racing with the events that had just happened. She swore that she had seen Ivory's foot move, so slightly, just before her wheelchair jerked to a stop. It was a swift movement, one that only someone who knew Ivory's true nature would catch.

But Aurora said nothing. She didn't want to cause a scene, and besides, she had no proof. So she bit her tongue and let Ivory's innocent act fool her father. Moreover, She's the only perfect daughter.

With the help of her father and the maids, Aurora was carefully lifted back into her wheelchair. She adjusted her clothes, wincing in pain as she moved. Her golden hair was all out of place from the little accident.

As she looked up at her father, she gave him a cold, hard stare. It was a silent rebuke, a reminder that she knew what had happened.

Without a word, Aurora wheeled herself away from the table, leaving her father to wonder what was wrong. Ivory's eyes followed her, a faint smirk playing on her lips.

But Aurora didn't look back. She knew that she had to be careful around Ivory, to always be on her guard. And she was determined to do just that.

"Don't mind her father; you know she loves attention" Ivory chuckled, but Leonard only stared into space, lost in thought. This made Ivory frown, and she angrily walked out of the dining leaving her father in his thoughts.

Xavier leaned back in his chair, his fingers working as he typed on his system. His eyes were glued to the screen before him as he typed away. His office was dimly lit, the only sound was the clicking of his fingers on the computer on his desk.

Damian knocked softly on the door before entering. He was in a perfect grey suit, and his brown hair was perfectly styled, making him more attractive "Xavier, I have a message from Godfather."

Xavier's eyes narrowed. "What is it?" He asked before focusing his attention back on the computer.

Damian hesitated, "He wants us to take out a family. A man, his wife, and their young daughter."

Xavier looked up. " You can ask Jericho to do that. Why tell me?" He asked.

"He wants you to carry out the operation" Damian responded, unsure of what Xavier's reaction would be.

Xavier's expression turned cold and he clenched his jaw tightly, he curled his hand into a fist

"What's the family offence?" he asked, his voice showing evidence of his irritation and anger.

Damian sighed "Godfather said the man owes him a debt. He's been dodging payments for months."

"An entire family, Damian? For a debt? That's not what we do."

"I know, but that's what you're meant to do", Damian stated nonchalantly. Xavier's eyes glinted with warning, they might be friends but there are boundaries

Damian chuckled "sorry boss"

"The man is the culprit tho"

Damian shrugged. "Godfather's orders, Xavier. You can't refuse him"

"And what if I do?" he replied, his eyes darkened and his voice dripped with deep hatred.

"You know you can't Xavier" he paused "more, you destroyed a family too"

Xavier's eyes flashed with anger, and he slammed his fist on the desk. The coffee cup on his desk fell harshly on the floor, the broken ceramics littering the floor.

"You dare to bring that up?" he snarled, standing up from the chair.

Damian took a step back, a small smirk playing on his lips. Taunting Xavier was his favourite thing to do.

"Isn't that the truth?" He questioned, still enjoying Xavier's display.

But Xavier was beyond reason. He lunged at Damian, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against the wall. Xavier's fist clenched, ready to strike.

"You think you can compare them?" Xavier spat, his face inches from Damian's. "Sarah and her family were not innocent, Damian. They were pawns in a game they didn't even know they were playing. But this family... they're innocent. They don't deserve to die."

Damian struggled to free himself, but Xavier's grip was so strong. Damian didn't make any effort to retaliate; he just stayed there, an amused smile still plastered on his face, which added to Xavier's fury.

"You're lucky you are my friend", Xavier said and sighed before releasing his hands. "Just get out, Damian!" He shouted

Damian raised his two hands in surrender.

"Okay, boss", he chuckled, earning a knock on the head from Xavier.

"Send the location to me," Xavier said, moving to his desk.

Damian nodded curly, closing the office door behind him

~5 PM ~

Xavier drove down the dark streets, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. Damian sat beside him, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

"You're not taking any backup?" Damian asked.

Xavier didn't respond, his gaze remaining fixed on the road.

Damian tried again. "Xavier, what if the man is armed? We should at least—"

Xavier's expression didn't change, his silence a clear indication that he wasn't interested in discussing it further.

Damian's frustration grew. "Xavier, come on! You're not thinking this through. We don't know what we're walking into."

Xavier's eyes moved to the rearview mirror, his gaze lingering for a moment before returning to the road. Still, he said nothing.

Damian threw up his hands. "Forget it. You're not going to listen to me anyway."

The rest of the drive was spent in silence.

After about twenty minutes of silence, the car finally stopped.

Xavier stepped out of the car, his eyes fixed on the small, unassuming house in front of them. Damian followed closely behind, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

Xavier walked up to the front door, his movements swift. He pushed open the door and stepped inside, his eyes adjusting to the warm glow of the living room.

The family of three sat on the couch, engrossed in a movie playing on the TV. The five-year-old child sat between her parents, her eyes wide with wonder as she watched the cartoon characters on screen. The wife was seated on the left, a beautiful smile placed on her face. The family was indeed happy.

The parents, oblivious to the danger that had just entered their home, smiled and laughed along with their child. Xavier's eyes swept the room, taking in the cosy atmosphere and the happy family. Something flashed in his eyes but he was quick to return to his stony face.

For a moment, he just stood there, his presence unnoticed by the family. Then, slowly, he began to move forward, his eyes fixed on the father.

He slowly brought his gun aiming at the Father.
