Chapter 13 - Chapter 3: Shadows of the Underground

---

The city of Eisenfall was a mix of light and shadow, a place where the brightest of hopes and the darkest of fears coexisted. On the surface, it was a bustling metropolis filled with life—people busy with their work, markets brimming with goods, and families enjoying a peaceful evening. But beneath the shiny veneer lay a much darker world, one that thrived in the hidden corners of the city. It was here, far from the gaze of ordinary citizens, that the underground truly existed—where pacts with demons were forged in blood, and power was taken at a steep cost.

1. Back in the Light

It had been two days since the chaos in the black market, and both Kai and Zephyr were still feeling the weight of that night. The images of the auction, the terrified boy, and the battle with the thugs haunted them. They hadn't spoken much about it, but the silence between them was heavy, filled with unspoken thoughts.

Eisenfall's streets glowed under the late afternoon sun, the hustle and bustle of city life in full swing. Kai's eyes scanned the market district as they walked through it, still on edge from their previous encounter. He could feel Obitius stirring within him, ever alert, always ready. Zephyr, by contrast, seemed more at ease, his hands casually resting behind his head as he strolled along.

"You still thinking about the boy?" Zephyr asked, breaking the silence.

Kai nodded. "I can't shake it. That could've been any one of us, Zephyr. Forced into a pact..."

Zephyr shrugged, though his eyes betrayed a deeper understanding. "Yeah, but we weren't. We made our choice. We control our own demons. Doesn't mean we can save everyone."

Kai didn't respond. He knew Zephyr was right, but that didn't make it any easier.

They passed by several market stalls, the air thick with the smell of spices, roasting meats, and the sound of merchants haggling with customers. The vibrancy of the city was in stark contrast to the gloom they'd encountered only a few nights ago.

2. Restless Energy

As they walked, Kai noticed a flicker of movement in his peripheral vision—something fast and shadowy darting across the rooftops above them. He halted for a moment, narrowing his eyes.

"You see that?" he asked Zephyr.

Zephyr gave him a sidelong glance, his relaxed demeanor not faltering. "See what? You're paranoid, man."

"No, seriously. Something's moving up there."

Without waiting for a response, Kai pushed through the crowd, weaving his way toward a narrow alley that led to a set of stone stairs winding upward. Zephyr, sighing in resignation, followed behind.

They climbed the stairs quickly, emerging onto the rooftops of Eisenfall. The view was breathtaking—rows of buildings stretched out beneath them, their angular rooftops casting long shadows in the fading sunlight. The air was cooler up here, and the noise of the city was a distant hum.

But Kai wasn't interested in the view. He was scanning the rooftops for whatever had caught his attention earlier. Zephyr stepped up beside him, peering around as well, though with less enthusiasm.

And then they saw it—a shadowy figure, fast as lightning, darting across the rooftops ahead of them.

"I told you," Kai muttered, a small grin forming on his lips.

Zephyr smirked, his eyes gleaming with challenge. "Race you."

Before Kai could respond, Zephyr shot forward, leaping across the narrow gap between buildings with ease, his body moving with the agility granted by Noctis's power. Kai cursed under his breath, quickly following suit, feeling the surge of energy from Obitius coursing through his veins as he launched himself across the rooftop.

The two of them moved like shadows themselves, darting and weaving across the city's skyline, their pacts amplifying their speed and agility. Kai felt the wind rushing past him, the thrill of the chase setting his blood on fire. For a moment, the weight of the black market and the horrors they'd witnessed fell away, replaced by the pure exhilaration of running free.

Zephyr leapt across a particularly wide gap, his form a blur as he seemed to vanish into the shadows before appearing again on the next rooftop. Kai followed closely behind, his movements precise and calculated, drawing on Obitius's strength to keep pace.

"Not bad!" Zephyr called over his shoulder, grinning.

Kai didn't bother responding. He was too focused on the figure they were chasing, which was now several rooftops ahead, moving with inhuman speed.

3. The Encounter

After several minutes of relentless pursuit, they finally cornered the figure at the edge of a rooftop overlooking a narrow alley. The figure stopped, turning to face them. Cloaked in darkness, its features were hard to make out, but there was something undeniably demonic about it—its glowing eyes and the faint aura of malevolent energy surrounding it were unmistakable.

Zephyr drew his twin daggers, the blades shimmering with a faint purple light as Noctis's power flowed into them. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice sharp.

The figure didn't respond. Instead, it raised a hand, and a pulse of dark energy shot toward them. Kai reacted instantly, summoning a barrier of shadow to absorb the blow, the power of Obitius crackling around him.

"Guess we're doing this the hard way," Kai muttered, his hand moving to his sword.

The figure lunged at them with blinding speed, and the rooftop erupted into chaos.

4. A Violent Dance

The battle that followed was a blur of movement and power. Kai and Zephyr fought side by side, their pacts fueling their every strike. Kai's sword sliced through the air with deadly precision, shadows trailing behind each movement, while Zephyr danced in and out of the darkness, his daggers finding their mark again and again.

The figure was fast—faster than anything they'd fought before. It moved like a shadow, its form shifting and bending in ways that seemed unnatural. But Kai and Zephyr were no ordinary fighters. They had been through too much, seen too much, to be taken down so easily.

Kai deflected a powerful blow aimed at his chest, using the momentum to spin and deliver a slash that connected with the figure's side. At the same moment, Zephyr appeared behind it, his daggers slicing through the air in a flurry of strikes.

The figure let out a guttural growl, stumbling back. For the first time, they got a good look at it—it wasn't entirely human. Its skin was dark and cracked, like the surface of burned coal, and its eyes glowed with an eerie red light.

"Not bad," Zephyr said, twirling his daggers. "But you're not gonna last long against us."

The figure hissed, its form starting to dissipate into smoke. Kai's eyes widened as he realized what was happening. "Zephyr, watch out!"

But it was too late. The figure exploded into a cloud of dark mist, engulfing them both. Kai coughed, trying to wave away the smoke, but it clung to him, suffocating and oppressive.

When the smoke finally cleared, the figure was gone.

5. Aftermath

Zephyr was the first to speak, his voice tinged with frustration. "Damn it, it got away."

Kai sheathed his sword, his mind racing. Whoever—or whatever—that figure was, it wasn't just an ordinary demon. There was something more to it, something dangerous.

"We need to find out what that was," Kai said, his voice grim.

Zephyr nodded in agreement, his usual carefree demeanor replaced with a seriousness that was rare for him. "Yeah. But for now, we should get out of here before someone calls the guards."

They made their way back down to the streets, their minds still buzzing from the encounter. As they walked, neither of them spoke, both lost in thought.

6. Scene Shift: The Lab

Meanwhile, deep beneath the city, in the hidden lab where the pact holders were held captive, something far more sinister was unfolding.

The lab was a place of horror—a sterile, cold environment where machines hummed and buzzed, draining the life and energy from the captive pact holders. Their bodies, frail and broken, were hooked up to machines that siphoned their demonic energy, feeding it into a central chamber.

The energy swirled and pulsed, gathering into a mass of raw power. It crackled and surged, filling the room with an eerie green light.

In the center of the lab, a figure lay on a metal slab, its body charred and broken beyond recognition. The energy flowed into it, mending its burnt skin, filling it with new life.

Slowly, the figure's eyes flickered open, glowing with an intense, malevolent light.

It was Aric, fully burnt and disfigured, but alive. His body twitched and convulsed as the last of the energy surged through him.

A low, raspy laugh escaped his lips, growing louder and more unhinged with each passing second.

"I'm coming, Kai..." he muttered, his voice filled with venom.

The chapter ended on a chilling note, the image of Aric's twisted, charred face burned into the reader's mind as he sat up, his laughter echoing through the lab.
