For the past week, Dave could feel a shift in the atmosphere around the castle. Ever since the painting session, Kol and Finn had been observing him with increased scrutiny. They weren't exactly subtle about it, either—popping up wherever he went, studying him with an intensity that would make anyone suspicious. Anyone with even an ounce of awareness would notice, and Dave had more than that.
Dave wasn't surprised. He had painted subtle symbols into his artwork, careful not to make them obvious but visible enough that anyone with magical knowledge might recognize them. He knew Kol and Finn, as former witches, would eventually notice. It was all part of his plan to keep them guessing, feeding their suspicions while keeping them from any real proof.
His hints didn't stop there, either. He kept dropping small indications that he might be a witch, but nothing too obvious—if he abruptly halted all of his hints, that would only make them more cautious. Meanwhile, Kol and Finn continued to circle him like hawks, casually steering conversations at dinner towards supernatural topics. Their questions were never overt, but Dave could feel the subtle digs for information.
Rebekah was also getting involved, as he learned from Aurora, who shared that Rebekah had been curiously probing her and Evelyn about me and my family . She was hoping they'd noticed something that would confirm her suspicion that Dave was indeed a witch. He smirked to himself; his plan was working. Every interaction, every bit of curiosity, brought them closer to the edge of discovery, but never quite enough to be certain.
One instance in library ,he picked up a picture book he'd found earlier—a harmless one with basic drawings and symbols from various ancient cultures. He leaned back in his chair, flipping through the pages, when he heard a faint sound behind him.
Before he could react, Kol popped out from behind a nearby pillar with a triumphant grin. "Caught you!" he exclaimed, a gleeful glint in his eyes as if he'd finally uncovered Dave's secret.
Dave blinked, suppressing a laugh. "Kol. Are you stalking me now, or do you just enjoy sneaking up on people?"
Kol ignored his words, his gaze fixed on the book in Dave's hands. "Ah, so that's your little secret, hmm? A book of runes, is it?"
Dave held back a smirk, closing the book and holding it up so Kol could see the illustrations more clearly. "This? It's just a picture book. Symbols and drawings—nothing magical here, Kol."
Kol leaned closer, his expression doubtful but playful. "Right. Because regular people always casually read books filled with strange symbols. Don't think I haven't noticed your... interest in the mystical."
Dave raised his hands in mock surrender, his voice dripping with amusement. "You caught me—reading a picture book. I know, shocking revelation."
Kol eyed him a moment longer, then broke into a laugh. "Alright, fine. Keep your secrets for now. But I'm watching you, Dave. Don't think you can fool me." He winked and strolled off, leaving Dave to his book with a knowing smile.
Despite Kol's playful banter, it was clear that he, along with the rest of his family, was digging deeper into Dave's behavior. The Mikaelsons' curiosity had only intensified since then. They began inviting him to more dinners, engaging him in conversations with subtle questions aimed at uncovering the truth. It was a delicate dance, and Dave enjoyed every second of it.
Meanwhile, stories and rumors of blood-sucking monsters began to spread as the days went by, adding fuel to the castle's growing tension. It was clear the Mikaelsons wanted answers, but he had every intention of keeping them waiting for a while longer. He was stalling for time, waiting for the perfect moment to make his grand reveal.

"yes"
Just as he was musing on his next steps, he felt a familiar prickling awareness—the sense that he was being watched. Turning slightly, he noticed Lucien lurking at the entrance of the hall, his expression unreadable but his gaze fixed on Dave.
Dave sighed inwardly. Lucien had been following him with unnerving regularity, and he was sure it wasn't on Kol or Finn's orders. No, this seemed like Lucien's own curiosity at play, which was starting to get a bit annoying. Perhaps it was time to set a trap and confront him, once and for all.
Before he could give it more thought, he heard quick footsteps approaching and turned to see Evelyn hurrying toward him, her face a mixture of excitement and worry.
"Dave!" she called, glancing around as though fearing someone might overhear.
"What's wrong, Evelyn?" he asked, masking his own concern.
She leaned in close, eyes wide with barely-contained excitement. "Something happened. Aro caught Klaus and Celene snogging in the west wing. He's furious! I thought you'd want to know."
Dave blinked, momentarily caught off guard before letting out a chuckle. Klaus, tangled in a scandal? Now that was news worth savoring.
