Lyra woke up feeling uneasy. She couldn't shake off the nightmares from the night before. Shadows had haunted her dreams, whispers and figures lurking in the dark. Even though she was now awake, the feeling stayed with her, like something was still watching.
Rolling over, she felt the warmth where Kael had been sleeping. He was already up, probably out working with the guards, setting up defenses. After all, Talia, the maid who had betrayed them, was still out there somewhere, with allies who wanted to harm their pack.
A soft knock on the door made her sit up, her heart racing for a moment until she saw Mina, her loyal maid, peek inside with her usual gentle smile.
"Good morning, Mistress," Mina said, coming in with a tray of breakfast. "Did you sleep well?"
Lyra managed a small smile. "I slept, yes… but the dreams were strange." She didn't mention how they seemed too real, how she'd felt like someone was there, watching her in her own mind.
