Chapter 4 - Chapter Three: The Price of Power

I stared at the pudding in the wizard's hand, the smooth surface glistening in the dim light of the shop. My mouth watered, my body practically trembling from the craving that gnawed at me. I could almost taste it already, but his words echoed in my mind.

*A memory. Just one.*

I hesitated, my hand still hovering over the bowl. How much could a single memory be worth? Maybe, just maybe, I could part with something small. The taste of my favorite food? A song I used to listen to? It didn't sound like much. But memories were who I was. Losing even one could change me in ways I didn't understand yet.

But the craving... it was starting to blur my vision, clouding my mind. Pudding was becoming more than just a need—it was becoming a compulsion. And if I didn't satisfy it soon, there was no telling how badly it would affect me.

"I..." I began, my voice barely audible. "I'll do it."

The wizard smiled, his yellowed teeth gleaming in the low light. "A wise choice, young wizard."

He extended the pudding toward me, and I hesitantly reached for it. As my fingers brushed the cool bowl, a strange sensation ran through me. A pulling, a tugging at something deep within my mind. It wasn't painful, but it was unsettling. The sensation grew stronger, and for a brief moment, I felt something slip away—a tiny fragment of my past, something I couldn't quite grasp anymore.

Then, it was gone.

The wizard let out a soft chuckle. "There. The trade is complete."

I stared at him, momentarily dazed. What had I just lost? I couldn't remember, and that only made the emptiness feel more profound. But the pudding was mine now, and the craving, the gnawing hunger, was finally going to be satisfied. I quickly grabbed a spoon and dug in, the sweet, creamy taste washing over my tongue like a wave of relief. It was everything I had hoped for.

As I ate, the wizard watched me silently, his eyes gleaming with a quiet amusement. "Enjoy it while you can," he said softly. "There's always a price for power in this city. Today it's a memory, but next time... who knows?"

I nodded, barely hearing him over the sound of my own thoughts. My craving had been satisfied, but his words left a cold chill in the back of my mind. What other prices would I have to pay in Wizard City? What would I have to sacrifice to gain real power here?

Once I finished, I thanked the wizard and left the shop, stepping back into the bustling streets of Wizard City. The craving had subsided, but a new feeling of unease had taken its place. The trade had been small, but it wouldn't be the last. That much was clear.

---

Weeks passed, and I settled into life in Wizard City. I spent most of my days observing other wizards, learning from a distance, and practicing my own magic in secret. The city was as chaotic as ever, with strange magical events happening on a daily basis—rival wizards dueling in the streets, bizarre magical creatures roaming freely, and the occasional explosion that no one seemed too concerned about.

Despite my powers, though, I couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider. The **Unacceptable** flaw hung over me like a cloud, making every interaction feel strained. Wizards avoided me, whispered behind my back, and gave me odd looks whenever I tried to join their ranks. It was frustrating, but I knew it was part of the price I had paid to become powerful.

Still, I had gained some control over my abilities. My **Power Shriek** had come in handy more than once, especially during an incident involving a rogue ice wizard who thought it would be funny to freeze half the city square. One scream from me, and he was down for the count.

And then there was my **Elemental Fire** power. I practiced it daily, feeling the flames flow through me like a second skin. I could conjure fire at will, shape it into forms, and even summon small elementals to do my bidding. It wasn't always easy to control, but I was getting better. Slowly.

But as the days turned into months, I started to notice something strange. Events in Ooo were beginning to shift. The once-static state of the world seemed to be changing, evolving. Whispers of the **Lich** surfaced now and then, stories about an ancient evil that had once terrorized the land, now sealed away in an amber prison. I knew the Lich would play a major role in the future, but for now, he remained trapped.

Still, it was only a matter of time before that changed.

---

A year passed.

By now, I had started to establish myself in Wizard City, even if I wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms. I had a small home—nothing fancy, just a small tower near the outskirts of the city—and I had earned a reputation as a powerful, if somewhat odd, young wizard. Most wizards still kept their distance from me, but they couldn't deny that I had skill. The fire elementals I summoned during duels were enough to make even some of the more seasoned wizards wary.

But it wasn't enough. Not for me.

I knew that Wizard City was just the beginning. There was so much more to explore in the land of Ooo. I had caught glimpses of it during my travels—stories of the **Candy Kingdom**, the **Ice Kingdom**, and even the **Fire Kingdom** where flames roared just as fiercely as my own powers. These places were out there, waiting to be discovered. And I wasn't going to stay confined to Wizard City forever.

One day, while practicing in my tower, a strange visitor came to see me. He was tall, lanky, with a long beard and a pointed hat that screamed "wizard." But there was something different about him—something more... mysterious. His eyes glowed faintly as he looked me over, his expression unreadable.

"You're the one they call the *Fire Kid*," he said, his voice low and measured. "The one who summons flames."

I nodded, unsure of where this was going. "Yeah. That's me."

He grinned, though there was no warmth in it. "Good. I've been watching you. You've got potential, but you're not living up to it. Not yet."

I raised an eyebrow. "And what's that supposed to mean?"

He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "There's a bigger world out there, kid. Ooo is vast, and you're barely scratching the surface. But there's something coming. Something big. If you want to be ready, you'll need to leave Wizard City. You'll need to see the rest of the land."

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. This wasn't just another wizard trying to push me around. There was something serious behind his words, something that sent a chill through me.

"The Lich?" I asked quietly.

The wizard's eyes gleamed. "Among other things. The Lich is just the beginning. There are forces at play here, ancient forces, and they're stirring. If you stay here, you'll be caught off guard when the storm hits. But if you leave... well, let's just say there's a lot of power to be gained out there."

Power. The word hung in the air between us, heavy with meaning.

I didn't need to think long. I had spent a year honing my skills in Wizard City, but I had always known this day would come. There was more out there for me to learn, more challenges to face. And if the Lich was involved, I wasn't going to be sitting on the sidelines.

"When do we leave?" I asked.

The wizard smiled, and this time, there was a flicker of warmth. "Soon. But first, you'll need to prepare. There's a lot more at stake than you realize."

---

As I prepared for my journey beyond Wizard City, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. This was the next step—the beginning of a much larger adventure. I had been given a second chance, and I wasn't going to waste it. There was power out there, waiting for me to claim it. And as the land of Ooo began to stir, I knew one thing for certain:

This was only the beginning.
