Chapter 4 - Bonds Forged in Battle

The following days blurred into a whirlwind of training sessions, laughter, and friendly rivalries. As the sun rose over the Kingdom of Huanshan, Alex and the other trainees gathered for their morning rituals. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the sounds of clashing swords and the encouraging shouts of instructors.

"Alright, everyone, today we take things up a notch!" Lianhua announced, standing at the front with a confidence that inspired respect. "We will be introducing sparring matches. You will partner with someone and test your skills against each other."

Alex felt a mixture of excitement and dread wash over him. "Sparring? Like, fighting each other?" he blurted out, wide-eyed.

"Of course!" Wei chimed in, grinning. "What did you think? A gentle game of tag?"

"Yeah, I thought we were going to play dodgeball or something," Alex replied, trying to keep his voice light. "What's next, thumb wrestling?"

Lianhua smiled slightly, shaking her head. "Focus on your training. You need to learn how to adapt and respond quickly. You will each face your partner for five minutes. May the best warrior win!"

"Five minutes? I might need a snack break!" Alex quipped, earning a few chuckles from his fellow trainees.

As pairs began to form, Alex found himself matched up against a serious-looking trainee named Mei. She had a fierce reputation for being one of the best fighters in their group, and the glint in her eyes indicated she meant business.

"Ready, Alex?" she asked, a sly smile on her lips. "Try not to embarrass yourself."

"Just don't cry too much when I win," he shot back, attempting to mask his nerves with bravado.

"Begin!" Lianhua shouted, and the match commenced.

Alex lunged forward, recalling his training against the dummy. He swung his wooden sword, but Mei was quick on her feet, dodging with impressive agility. She countered with a series of quick strikes that made Alex scramble back, barely managing to block her blows.

"Whoa, slow down!" he yelped, feeling the pressure mount as her strikes came faster. "I didn't sign up for this level of intensity!"

"Then you should train harder!" Mei replied, her voice steady as she pressed the attack.

As they continued to spar, Alex began to notice the rhythm of the battle. He started to anticipate Mei's moves, dodging her strikes and returning fire with his own. With each clash of their wooden swords, he felt a surge of energy coursing through him—was this what they meant by Qi?

"Good! You're starting to get it!" Lianhua called out, her voice a beacon of encouragement.

"Finally!" Alex grinned, feeling a newfound confidence. But before he could celebrate, Mei executed a swift maneuver, knocking him off balance and sending him sprawling to the ground once more.

"Don't let your guard down!" she admonished playfully, helping him up. "You have potential, but you need to be more aware of your surroundings."

"Thanks, I'll just add that to my list of things to remember—right under 'don't trip over your own feet,'" Alex chuckled, brushing off the dirt from his clothes.

After the match, they both took a breather, and Mei's expression softened. "You did well, for a beginner. You have a good instinct for the fight."

"Thanks! You weren't so bad yourself. I mean, I didn't cry, so that's a win!" he replied, causing Mei to laugh.

Their moment of camaraderie was interrupted by Wei, who had just finished his own match, looking smug. "I hope you guys enjoyed my dazzling display of skill. I mean, it's not easy being this good."

"Dazzling? You mean flailing around like a windmill?" Alex teased, crossing his arms with a grin.

"Touché!" Wei admitted with a dramatic flair, pretending to swoon. "But you'll all see—I'll be the one leading the charge against the forces of darkness!"

"First, let's focus on not tripping over our own swords," Lianhua chimed in, her tone teasing.

As the sun began to set, they gathered around a fire, exhaustion settling in as they shared stories of their training, victories, and humorous mishaps.

"Remember that time you accidentally hit the dummy instead of your opponent?" Wei laughed, pointing at Alex. "I think it still has a dent from your epic swing!"

"Hey! It was a tactical decision! The dummy was clearly asking for it!" Alex defended himself, his laughter blending with those around the fire.

As the flames crackled, they discussed their dreams, fears, and aspirations. Alex learned more about his companions: Lianhua's quest to avenge her fallen family, Mei's determination to become the best warrior, and Wei's endless tales of daring escapades.

For the first time, Alex felt a sense of belonging. He wasn't just a kid lost in a strange world; he was part of something bigger. They were warriors in training, bound together by a shared purpose.
