Edelweiss flowers, eternal and in full bloom, dotted the expanse of green mountain grass. They grew between the ruins—remnants of the grandest terrace of the stepped pyramid, now only hints of its former grandeur.
The horizon above remained dark, with stars scattered across the sky. Still, the night's reign was nearly at an end; the faint glow of the moon would soon be extinguished by the first light of the coming dawn.
Silence dominated, as many of them had chosen to rest, letting their exhausted bodies find some respite. The only sounds were the whispering wind and the soft crackling of firewood in the campfires.
At least, until Kairav broke the quiet with a soft voice. "Will he really wake again?" he asked, addressing the only person awake across from him. "Right before he fell, I heard him whisper that he would return with the first light of dawn…"
