Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 Day 1: The man in the Corner

"Sitting still and doing nothing doesn't sit too right with me, what if there's another collapse and we're just sitting here ", the man with the baseball said, he seemed to agree with my concerns.

"Yes why should we do as you say, who are you to order us?" snipped an older lady, who I felt supplemented her lifespan with spite and snobbery.

Still undecided on whether to weigh in or not I glanced out the window. The lights in the tunnel were gone, but I could still make out the brownish hue of the earth piled up in front of us, bits of grey steel poked out. The remains of the cars in front of us. Looking the other way I saw the tunnel, stretching on like an endless shadow. 'It isn't blocked, at least there's some good news.'

"I'm a police captain, experienced in emergency situations, you can trust I know what I'm doing, so settle down and stay put, this is no time for petty quarrelling." The man with the moustache said, ending the argument with huffed responses from the capped man and old woman.

"How long do you think it will take before people find us?" asked a woman, she was softly spoken and her words felt gentle, the suit she was wearing didn't seem right on her.

"A few hours at the maximum before someone comes to get us." the moustached man replied, "A few Hours!!" erupted a flustered voice, "I don't know if my baby can take that long down here," the sundress woman half shouted, half stuttered.

The child in question seemed the calmest of all of us, sucking its thumb and glancing around with wide blue eyes.

"Your child will be fine, for now we should probably get acquainted with one another, seeing as we'll be here a while," stated the man with the moustache "I'll go first, I'm Andrew, a police captain." He glanced towards the woman with the soft voice.

"Oh, my name is Alison" she said "And I work at an insurance company, it's nice to meet you, though I wish it had been in a better situation" she dryly chuckled after that.

"I'm Denise, retired if you must know." Curtly said the old woman, who went next. "I'm Jake," I went next "a librarian, though I aspire to be an astrologist."

"Didn't need an autobiography boy," Denise cut in, frowning, I intended to respond when someone else got there first. "Ah leave the guy alone old lady" said the man with the cap waving his hand dismissively "I'm Tim, and this here is my wife Rebbecca and my son Rain."

I thought that we'd all finished our introductions and was about to start pondering more on my strange gut feeling this morning and if I had just been hungry, when Andrew interrupted my train of thought. "And you in the corner, what's your name?" Following Andrew's gaze I saw the man he was referring to. Wearing priest garb and kneeling in the corner was a black man clutching a rosary, and muttering prayers. He lifted his head and his eyes seemed to pierce through my soul. "I am Liam my child, may God bless us and guide us, challenging times await"
