However, I cannot allow it to impact our work because of financial constraints. You also cannot."
His words struck her with the force of a blow to the stomach, causing a momentary sensation of breathlessness. He was acknowledging it—he also sensed the tension and attraction between them. However, he was also conveying to her that it was insignificant. That they were unable to take action on it. And in some way, that only exacerbated the situation.
"I am aware," she murmured, her voice trembling. "I am aware."
Alexander's manner became gentler, though just a bit. Well done. Next, we must remain concentrated. No further interruptions.
Natalie gave a tight nod, feeling her throat constrict. "Stop being distracted."
However, when she tried to go away, the pain in her chest intensified even more. Despite their efforts to reject it, it was evident that Alexander Pierce was more than just her employer. He was the one person she desired above all, the one thing out of reach for her. And it was causing her great internal distress.
At evening, Natalie and Karen meet at a cafe. Karen was the first to get to the cafe expecting Natalie, and when she showed up, Karen waved her hand to let her know where she's sitting. Karen orders a cup of coffee for her friend as soon as she settles down.
Seeing how Natalie looked so disturbed, Karen couldn't stay still and asked Natalie with a very serious face, "You look so disturbed; what's bothering you? Is it your boss?"
"Do I? I didn't notice though, but what's with the serious face, huh?" Natalie said jokingly.
"You know I am serious; why are you joking with it? I honestly don't like how you look so disturbed," Karen said.
"But I didn't look that disturbed; I am fine." She answered back.
Natalie noticed Karen was about to bombard her with questions again. "I am going to miss you, Gosh, I am missing you already." She cut in.
"Are you kidding me, are you..." The conversation was cut short by the server who came to deliver the coffee.
Sensing that Natalie doesn't want to talk about the issues yet. "I'm going to miss you too; you know you're my best friend in the whole world." She said it teasingly.
"But when exactly will you be back?" Natalie asked, putting on a sad face.
"I can't say yet; just a couple of months and I will be back." "Oh alright." Natalie said, pouting her lips. Karen snaps, "Oh, mom said she's offended you haven't come visit her in a while now, and even dad."
"Oh my goodness, you should have tried to explain to them that I am very busy these days, and please tell them I am sorry and I will visit them soon; work hasn't been easy these days."
"Hmm, work, are you sure it's just about work or your boss? Is he still acting all professional?" Karen asked, finding a perfect opportunity to go back to the unsaid conversation.
"Well, still the same or... much worse, but I think there's just this tension between us that none of us is ready to admit." She said.
"Who is not ready to admit that, you or him?" Karen asked, knowing the right answer, but before she could answer, "Whatever it's, you know I'm with you, right? Just make sure you will not get hurt." Karen said, giving out a worried look.
"I will; that's why you're my bestie." Natalie said, smiling.
The investor presentation was fast approaching, and the nervousness was growing. Natalie always worked overtime, carefully analysing every aspect to guarantee flawlessness. She grasped the importance of this, not just for the company but also for her own well-being. This was the moment that would cement her career and her future. In spite of trying to focus on the task, she couldn't stop thinking about Alexander.
The hostility between them had intensified since their last conversation. They both agreed to keep a professional relationship, but their unspoken desires continued to pull them closer despite their efforts to resist. Natalie closely observed all of his actions—every expression, every utterance. It was maddening. She had never felt this way about anyone before, especially not towards Alexander Pierce, whose behaviour was characterised by arrogance and control. Nevertheless, there was a magnetic quality about him that she couldn't help but be drawn to—an undeniable attraction that kept pulling her in, even though she was aware of the dangers.
