The Uchiha clan could argue for eight straight days, holding discussions day and night, yet still fail to reach a conclusion. This was no surprise, given that opposition within their ranks was now dominant.
In short, ever since Tobirama had come to power, he had chilled the hearts of the Uchiha people for over ten years. Many among them no longer trusted that Senju Tobirama would grant the Uchiha clan any significant benefits.
Even though Uchiha Kagami had promised repeatedly, and upon learning of Yuya's plan was eager to assure everyone that the Uchiha would be responsible for executing it flawlessly, it didn't matter. While Kagami was favored by Tobirama, within his own clan, many saw him as a coward and a traitor.
He still had influence, but only among the moderates.
Indeed, within the Uchiha clan, there was no longer a faction that completely aligned with Konoha. There were radicals who believed the Uchiha deserved more power and moderates who urged patience, suggesting that things should be negotiated slowly and carefully.
The radicals didn't trust Tobirama's intentions. Although the moderates were also doubtful, they believed that taking on the plan could yield some benefits. And even if it didn't, they might lose some resources, but they could finally give up on the Hokage. That, too, had its advantages.
Only Uchiha Kagami had faith that Senju Tobirama and Yuya wouldn't betray the Uchiha clan, but most of his kin didn't share his optimism.
Feeling disheartened, Kagami watched from the sidelines as the discussions within his family continued heatedly, but without any real progress.
Seeking to clear his mind, Kagami decided to take his wife and their infant child out for a walk through the streets of Konoha. As he strolled and chatted with his wife, Masako, he felt his worries ease.
Masako, carrying their baby daughter in her arms, smiled at Kagami and whispered, "I used to wish you could spend more time with me. Now that you're back, you're busy again with family matters. I know what you're like, but those in the clan don't. Why not set the family discussions aside for now and take a break? Didn't Hokage-sama give you a month's vacation?"
Blushing slightly, Masako added softly, "I'd also love for you to go shopping with me on the commercial street."
Though they were married and had a child, the Uchiha family, like many ninja clans, often focused on continuing the family line first. Love typically came after marriage and parenthood.
Kagami agreed. He had been weighed down by many worries lately, and now was the perfect opportunity to relax.
As they walked from the Uchiha compound toward the bustling commercial street, Kagami noted the contrast between the lively nighttime crowd and the near-deserted streets during the day.
"There are so few people here during the day, but it's always so lively at night," Kagami remarked, smiling.
Masako responded with a soft smile, "Yes, everyone works during the day. We Uchiha do as well."
A delicious smell filled the air, catching Kagami's attention. "Is that… grilled skewers?" he asked, looking at a child by a stall. "Isn't that Teiyaki? Doesn't his family sell pancakes?"
Masako chuckled softly.
Kagami laughed too. "Okay, okay, no need to tease me. I haven't been back in a year, and even since returning, I haven't been out much. How could I know everything?"
Masako explained, "Teiyaki's family used to sell pancakes, but now that people have more money, the demand has changed. Pancakes were cheap and filling, but they don't compare to grilled meat. Plus, when the city was renovated, every household was given a bit of space at their door for stalls. Teiyaki's family set up a skewer stall, and their food is pretty good. Want to try some?"
Kagami agreed, and as they approached the stall, the young Uchiha Teiyaki eagerly asked, "Brother Kagami! Would you like some skewers?"
"Two, please," Kagami replied.
Teiyaki quickly handed over two skewers, asking for a hundred ryo in total. After paying, Kagami overheard Teiyaki calling to his mother inside, "Mom! I sold two skewers! Can I eat one now?"
A voice from inside scolded, "Eat? You've already eaten everything we brought! Now get back to work!"
A woman then appeared, holding a slipper, but her demeanor changed instantly when she saw Kagami. "Oh, it's you, Kagami! When did you return?"
She quickly ordered her son to grill more skewers for Kagami, insisting they were free of charge. But Kagami politely declined the offer.
During their conversation, Kagami asked, "Why don't you and Uncle live in the Uchiha compound anymore?"
Ryoko, Teiyaki's mother, waved her hand dismissively. "I couldn't stand the atmosphere there—people are always brooding and resentful. Since we moved here, we've been happier. Sure, it's tiring, but we sleep well and eat well. There's no one constantly telling you which side to take."
Lowering her voice, she added, "But you can't tell anyone else I said that, alright?"
Kagami assured her he wouldn't. He then asked, "Is everything going well here? Do you need any help?"
Ryoko perked up, her face lighting up. "Yes! If you could tell the security department to stop patrolling through here so often, that'd be great. This is a street in the East District of Konoha, not just the entrance to the clan compound. Their constant rooftop patrols are bad for business!"
Kagami paused, then nodded. "I'll mention it."
Before they left, Kagami asked if many Uchiha had moved to the area. Ryoko nodded enthusiastically, explaining that many had moved out of the compound and into more independent lives, working in factories and earning steady wages.
As they walked away, Kagami felt a flash of realization. Yuya, Tobirama's aide, wasn't targeting the Uchiha clan specifically. He was undermining the power of all ninja families in Konoha...
