Chapter 2
Serena's POV
My breath was ragged with my lungs burning by the time I finally walked inside the sitting room, walking down here faster took a lot of my energy.
"Didn't you say my husband is waiting for me, Steward Gu?" I asked the man, who seemed to be looking in a particular direction, which I didn't get for a moment until I heard some movement from the next place, which was the dining room.
" Miss Serena….."
I glanced at the lady who had called my name the moment I walked towards the dining room. I recognized the woman instantly. She has always ignored me like a plague since the moment I got to the mansion and throughout my stay here.
"Yes," I asked indifferently while my gaze was thoroughly fixed on the latter who seated majestically while backing me.
"You are late," She said to me in a commanding tone that instantly made me look her in the eyes. I was confused for a moment.
It would not be an exaggeration if I said her words didn't surprise me. She'd always ignored me, and I had to do my findings. I learned she was the head maid despite her being young age, and there I learned she was named, Lisa.
I don't just know why; I feel there's more hatred towards me rather than her just hating me for my looks but I don't give a damn about her. After all, we have no business together.
Due to the angle where I stood, I was unable to see the face of the person sitting there.
"Really! Is there any particular time given to me?" I asked while looking at her; I was surprised by my boldness, but I guess everyone would have been surprised by my response.
I was pretty much sure she must have thought I would be frightened when she questioned me but too bad I had already made up my mind to stand up for myself.
While Lisa was still thinking about what to say, I had already walked to the dining table and pulled out a chair for myself still without making eye contact with the man.
The table seemed to have turned more chilly than usual as everywhere turned cold just with the aura of the man In front of me. I wasn't even sparing the man a glance because I didn't even know what to say to him due to how scared I was. I could only sit and look at the delicious delicacy on the table.
The dining table was set with elegance. There was a roast pheasant, golden and juicy, alongside a rich lobster soup. A fresh salad with tomatoes, creamy cheese, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar added a vibrant touch. Smoked salmon on small pancakes with a hint of caviar and fresh bread complemented the spread. I was a bit surprised because, throughout my days here, I had always eaten salad and some other side dishes.
Even for dessert, I could see there were sweet pastries and a rich chocolate mousse. The dining room smelled of delicious food, creating a luxurious lunchtime atmosphere. I would have been the happiest person on earth if the person across me wasn't gazing at me.
I expected him to say something but it seemed like there wouldn't be any word from the man but thinking about it. This was our first time meeting and the man should do the talking.
"Damn! I might break the chair if I sank all my weight and worries into it," I thought for a couple of seconds before dishing out some food onto my plate, taking as much as I wanted as all those were my favorite, not caring about the man who was sitting across from me without doing anything.
I could see the servants on standby exchanging glances among themselves before my gaze swiftly met Steward Gu, who seemed to be passing some messages through his eyes, but I was just so occupied in my world that I didn't grasp what he meant.
'Thud'
The loud sound of something banging on the table caught my attention. I was startled at that moment, which led to my spoon falling off my hand; looking towards the direction of the bang, only to find a pair of eyes gazing at me coldly.
For a moment, the intensity of the gaze made me feel a rise in my temperature. My back was itching, but I couldn't do anything as my gaze was thoroughly fixed on the man, likewise his on me.
I averted my gaze for a moment before looking back at him, not to his eyes but this time around his face and I could almost smitten into the thin air.
It was like I had never seen a handsome man; yes, I had never seen one before except the man In front of me. He was a striking figure with a chiseled physique that spoke both confidence and detachment merely at first glance.
I must have looked like a total fool but I can't blame myself. He's the most impressive and handsome man I have ever seen in my life.
"Too bad, I can't have him for myself," I thought for a few seconds before returning to my actual self where I flashed the man a smile.
"Seen enough?" He asked me. I couldn't help but think his voice was deep, alluring, and compatible with his fascinating looks, but his question seemed to sound cold into my ear, making the temperature drop significantly.
"Nope…. Ah… Yes, were you speaking to me?" I said blinking twice like a fool before returning to my senses.
It wasn't an intentional act, but on the outside, it might seem like I had done it intentionally.
I was still confused when the man dropped a stack of paper in front of me right on the table in my face but those papers seemed familiar.
It was familiar because it was a divorce agreement I sent to the man.
My attention shifted back to the paper while I went through it. I didn't read it much because I was aware of what was inside the paper but I never expected it to happen so soon.
"What if he comes here to sign the divorce paper?"
" How could I think of following my Mitchell's advice by using this means to lure the man home?"
"What if he has been waiting for this along?" I thought for a moment as thousands of questions were running through my head.
The man tapped his fingers on the table, bringing my attention "Did you send the divorce agreement by mistake?" I heard him ask but it was as if my tongue got tied as I couldn't move my mouth.
The servant had their eyes almost popping out of the socket in disbelief as they all glanced at me. Of course, they must have thought I must have gone nuts to demand a divorce.
"Who in their right mind would want to divorce a man like the man sitting across from me? Nobody except me."
"Damn! I must have been possessed to have taken Mitchell's advice!" I thought not without thinking it might not end well.
If I knew it would turn out this way, I wouldn't have taken Mitchell's advice to use that means to lure the man home, but what could I possibly do when it has gotten to this extent? The only way for me was to play it as if I had made up my mind.
"What? Do you love me that much to think I have sent you the divorce agreement by mistake?" I said as I batted my eyelashes at him trying so hard not to be anxious.
I don't know why, but I felt some sort of rage burning within the man In front of me; even his terrifying aura was enough to burn me into ashes, but I sat still, maintaining eye contact with him.
I could see Steward Gu's eyes; it was as if those pairs of eyes were passing on some words to me to stop provoking his master.
But I knew I was not provoking anyone, I was just trying to find a way for myself in this messy situation I put myself in.
"Get lost," I heard him say, thinking he had said that to me, which made me Instantly stand up, ready to leave the dining room. I couldn't believe he created a way for me.
I stood up from the chair, ready to leave; by now, all the servants had already left except Steward Gu. I didn't feel like eating anymore so I quickly attempted to leave as fast as possible.
"Tell me your conditions."
The man's magnetic voice stopped me in my tracks as I turned around to look at the man whom I was married off to. I realized I knew nothing about the man; it'd be a big shame not to know a single thing about my so-called husband.
But that wasn't even the point now. The point now was what condition was he speaking about?
"Bring me the chequebook," I heard him tell Steward Gu, but I was still confused.
Steward Gu dropped the chequebook in front of the man while I was staring keenly at the both of them, trying to understand what was happening.
"Seven million dollars?" The man asked me as he twirled the fountain of his pen in a manly manner leaving me rendered speechlessly.
