Chapter 3 - 3.

 A Glimpse Ahead

Lila Reynolds had always been an ordinary girl. At sixteen, she navigated the tangled web of high school, balancing studies with her love for sketching. But when the app "Foretell" began trending at Riverwood High, her life took an unexpected turn.

The app boasted an impressive algorithm that promised to reveal glimpses of the user's future. Curiosity got the best of Lila, and after hearing her friends rave about the incredible predictions, she downloaded it that Saturday afternoon.

"What's the worst that could happen?" she mused, tapping the app icon on her phone. Lila swiped through the colorful interface and felt a thrill when she read, "Your future awaits."

Her fingers trembled slightly as she pressed the 'Predict' button. After a moment, a notification chimed: "At 7:03 PM, the answer will unfold." She glanced at the clock on her wall and shrugged. Maybe it meant she'd receive a text?

That evening, as she sat at her dining table finishing her homework, her phone buzzed. She opened the app, only for a shiver to run down her spine. "In 20 minutes, someone close will betray you." Lila felt a knot form in her stomach. Who could betray her? She shoved aside the thought — it was only an app, after all.

7:03 PM arrived, and Lila took a deep breath as she prepared to hang out with her friends. They often met at the local café, a cozy hideaway known for its iced chocolate and laughter. The moment she stepped into the café, she spotted Mia, her best friend, laughing with their classmate Jake.

"Hey, Lila! Glad you could join us!" Mia said, but there was a strange glint in her eyes. Lila's heart raced, and for a split-second, she wondered if the app was just a harmless joke.

As the evening continued, the laughter was loud, and Lila immersed herself into the moment. But a small nagging feeling remained — could something truly happen tonight?

Suddenly, Jake leaned close to Mia with a conspiratorial smile. "I heard you're going to the party without Lila. What if she finds out?" he whispered, almost too quietly for Lila to catch but loud enough to send a jolt of unease through her.

"Don't worry about her. It's just a few of us hanging out," Mia replied, but her tone was cautious. Lila felt her heart drop. Betrayal looming so close felt suffocating.

"We should tell her," Jake urged, attempting to draw Lila back into the conversation, but the shadow was already suffocating her.

The night continued, but Lila's joy evaporated. The messages from Foretell flooded her mind — who could be behind this? The room felt heavy, and she excused herself, needing air.

In the dimly lit alley outside the café, Lila's phone buzzed again. This time the screen glowed ominously with a new prediction: "Trust will shatter at midnight."

Fear gripped her. She needed to expose the truth before it was too late. What kind of power did this app actually hold? With determination, she typed in the app's support feature and sent a frantic message: "What happens if the predictions come true?"

Seconds turned to minutes, and Lila felt the cool night breeze against her skin. Just as she resolved to turn back, a new message from the app appeared on her screen, sending her heart into a frenzy: "You can't escape. Midnight will change everything."

What did that mean? How could an app possibly know her fate? Lila grabbed her phone and raced back inside the café, her mind electrified with possibilities.

When she burst through the door, Jake and Mia were in an intense whisper. She could see the guilt in their eyes. Swallowing her fear, she confronted them. "What are you hiding?"

They froze, glancing at each other before Mia sighed. "Okay, Lila, we were going to tell you…"

"They were planning a surprise party for you!" Jake blurted out. The relief that washed over Lila was immediate, but it was short-lived because her phone buzzed once again.

"Trust will shatter at midnight."

The clock on the wall read 11:55 PM. Lila's heart raced, a frenzy of confusion and concern mixed within her. She stared at Jake and Mia and suddenly wondered if there was more to the app than simple predictions.

A loud bang came from outside, drawing everyone's attention. The sound of shattering glass echoed as the café's main window spontaneously exploded! The scream escaped Mia's lips as shards flew into the café. In the chaos, Lila caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure sprinting away, leaving destruction in its wake.

The patrons stampeded toward the exit, panic driving each of them. Lila's heart pounded — the app had been right. In those fleeting moments, she realized that the true betrayal wasn't between friends; it was the trust in a prediction that was literally shattering her world around her.

In the aftermath, as she and her friends regrouped outside, they were shaken but safe. The café's owner called the police, and as Lila stood there absorbing the fraying edges of her reality, her phone buzzed one last time.

"Tomorrow is a new beginning."

With a deep breath, Lila deleted the app, watching it vanish from her screen. She realized that the future is often unpredictable, and it's okay to embrace the unknown. Lila felt her heart begin to mend as she turned to her friends, a new determination igniting within her. Instead of leaning on an app for answers, she would carve out her own future, one heartbeat at a time.

As the night faded into dawn, leaving behind the chaos, Lila smiled, ready for the path ahead.
