Chapter 39 - Turning things around

Although their victory is worth celebrating, and that's what they did before.

It's just that ....

"What's wrong, Captain?" asked Tione, who saw Finn pensive while biting his thumb with a troubled expression.

Hearing Tione's question, they all stopped their movements and looked at the two curiously.

"Before we escaped to this room..., we were in the hallway directly connected to the 50th floor..., and since the Monster came from the front towards us...."

Although Finn only muttered a little, but Tione could clearly hear all his words.

Her eyes immediately widened in disbelief.

"Oh, no ...."

"I might be too worried..., but I don't want to take any unnecessary risks." Finn could once again feel his thumb throbbing at this moment, he pondered for a moment before finally looking at Tione with a serious gaze, "Tione, gather everyone immediately! We're going back to camp at full speed!"

With that, led by Finn, the two search teams decided to return to camp in the middle of their mission.

But, as they arrived at Floor 50, the scene in front of them left them dumbfounded!

*****

"Archers, open fire!"

On the 50th Floor, Riveria led the remaining members of the Familia to evacuate to the top of the hill.

Surrounding them, was a parade of caterpillar monsters that walked around the hill, trying to reach them.

And up on the hill, Riveria led everyone and gave orders, all the while dodging the purple liquid that kept being sprayed at them.

Luckily, they were on the hill at the moment, and there were several shelters that protected them from the liquid.

It was just that, almost immediately, the trees around them melted, and many of the weapons and shields they carried also melted and emitted smoke.

On orders from Riveria, the archers on the hilltop quickly unleashed a barrage of arrows that rained down on the caterpillar monsters approaching them.

Many of the arrows that hit their bodies instantly dissolved and melted once they came into contact with the purple liquid oozing from their wounds.

But, the good thing was, some of these monsters lost their footing among the rocks, which made them fall and fall on their companions below them-and dragged them to the ground to their deaths.

"They're still this many...?"

Seeing the scene in front of them, Lefiya could not help but exclaim with fear.

"At least they're still not surrounded by these monsters." Finn calmly assessed their current situation.

Since Riveria made a quick decision to evacuate to high ground, there seemed to be no casualties and at most only a few Adventurers were injured.

Then again, these caterpillar monsters didn't seem to have any sense; they were moving towards a single goal, which was probably following their leader in front.

And Riveria's attempt to lead her comrades in stopping these monsters was certainly no easy feat.

As you can see, there were hundreds or perhaps more caterpillar monsters on the floor, and all of them were crawling through the trees and rocks, heading towards the refuge that was in evidence.

Of course, if they did not act immediately, their comrades could be in danger.

That's why-

"Ais-san?!"

-Lefiya immediately exclaimed once she realized Ais was moving quickly; activating her Magic while drawing her sword, heading towards one of the Monsters creeping towards the hill.

*Pu-chi!

With a single slash, Ais quickly cleaved the caterpillar monster's body in half.

Seeing Ais' appearance of diving straight into the enemy ranks, and making corrosive liquid rain everywhere as if it were fireworks, they certainly wouldn't stay silent, right?

"I'm going too!"

"Right behind you!"

"Sorry, Captain! But I'm leaving too!"

Bete, Tiona and Tione quickly followed Ais. Raising their weapons and preparing to fight.

Lefiya was about to go after them, but she was slow and thought she might become a burden. So, she obediently stayed near Finn, standing with Kelvin who was next to her.

"Finn ...."

Gareth was about to say something, but Finn quickly interrupted him.

"Just let them be. There's no point in stopping them right now. Gareth, can you protect Lefiya and Kelvin?"

"Yes, I can." Gareth nodded.

"Oi, oi, Captain. You didn't really think I'd do nothing, did you?" Kelvin gave Finn a disgruntled look, hearing Finn's words offended him at the moment.

"Give up, Kelvin. With your injuries like that, it's impossible for you to fight right now." Finn sighed helplessly.

Although Kelvin said he could still fight before, but Finn really doubted that.

Keep in mind, using a Scythe was different from using a one-handed Sword. The Scythe had one side that leaned heavier and was unbalanced, which was difficult to control with just one hand.

After all, Kelvin's right hand was more dominant, and if he were to fight with only his left hand....

Finn really doubted Kelvin could do that.

"Looks like you underestimated me too much, Captain. Who says I can't fight in my condition?"

Looking at Finn who was looking at him doubtfully, Kelvin immediately gave him a dissatisfied look.

"...." Finn stared at Kelvin silently, surely he really doubted his words at this time.

He began to ponder and think of all their consequences in the future. And after a while of thinking, he looked at Kelvin and said quietly:

"...Well, you can fight. Just don't push yourself."

"Heh, can't promise." Kelvin grinned, took out the Corrosion Scythe and held it with his left hand.

In the next second, he kicked the ground under his feet, making his body slam forward as he made a swinging motion with his Scythe.

*Slash!

Kelvin swung his Scythe, but in front of him there was nothing, he was really just slashing at the wind at the moment.

But, he didn't stop, doing the same thing several times in different places.

No one knew what he was doing, and Bete just snorted looking at him, thinking this guy was stupid or something. To be sure, she remained focused on her own battle especially with the number of enemies they faced.

Some say, experience is one's best teacher. And no matter how strong a person is, if he doesn't have the experience and how to control his strength, it will be a useless thing.

That's why ....

*Slash! Slash! Slash! Slash! Slash!

Numerous slash marks suddenly appeared in the air, cutting the caterpillar monster's body in the process, and making various purple liquids splash into the air.

This scene left them confused.

What exactly was going on?

Only, different from those who were confused, Finn, Lefiya and Kelvin looked calm as if what they saw was a normal thing.

Lefiya, was a particular case, considering she was Kelvin's Party mate, and he often saw her using her Magic.

Finn, he was the Captain of the Family, and had the special right to see the status of his Family comrades.

And Kelvin..., he had this all planned out.

Making various meaningless slashes in the air, and luring the caterpillar monster to move towards the trap he had set. And when they got close, Kelvin activated his Magic, making the air he had marked before be torn apart, leaving slash marks with a blood hue there.

This scene was certainly unusual. There was no sign of a Magic spell being cast, the Magic appeared in such a way and instantly.

"What is it?!"

"Amazing!"

"You show-off!"

Tiona, Tione and Bete gave various different responses. Only Ais remained silent, but her eyes gave the illusion that they were shining as she stared at Kelvin.

She started moving faster, finishing off many caterpillar monsters in her path, and made the battlefield instantly shift thanks to her actions.

Seeing their comrades killed at Ais' hands so quickly, the caterpillar monsters quickly turned around and crept towards her, intent on finishing off the blonde-haired swordsman.

Bete and Tione quickly approached her, intending to provide support at the sight of the many caterpillar monsters charging at Ais.

Kelvin, he wasn't much better. Only, he was more isolated thanks to the air traps he had created around him.

He just stood still while luring the caterpillar monsters to approach him, and when they were close enough, he activated his trap and Slash! The monster was cut in half.

Looking at the chaotic battlefield, Finn couldn't do much.

"I don't think he'll do that." Gareth stroked his beard as he looked at Kelvin with an interested gaze.

If before Finn had forbidden Kelvin to fight because of his injury, but now the situation was better.

Kelvin was just standing still, but there were many caterpillar monsters that he had defeated thanks to the traps set using his Magic.

"His magic is so troublesome..., those airborne traps are completely invisible to the naked eye..., and before you know it, you've been cut in half...."

Finn had to admit that Kelvin's magic was quite simple but deadly at the same time.

His ability to manipulate the concept of "wound" was certainly not something to be taken lightly.

Moreover, this magic not only worked on living beings, but also worked on inanimate objects and the environment itself.

With all that said, Kelvin made many slashes in the air around him, setting traps that could be activated at any time. And in the next second, various purple liquids spurted everywhere, leaving liquid stains that melted the ground below.

Seeing that scene, Finn felt it was a waste to have stopped Kelvin earlier.

It seemed that, despite the current loss of his right hand, he had no shortage of ways to fight against his enemies.
