Michael stood and placed a calming hand on my shoulder. "Let's talk to her. Together. If there's an explanation, we'll hear it. And if there isn't…" His voice trailed off, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air.
Caroline was in the kitchen, a mug of tea cradled in her hands, when we approached her. She looked up, her eyes darting between us as if sensing the confrontation coming her way.
