Chapter 34 - A Night Off

As the echoes of their determined meeting faded, Samantha proposed a rare break from their intense preparations.

"How about we all unwind a bit tonight? There's a high-class bar not too far from here, Marikina River Gold, perfect for what we need."

She glanced at her phone, already pulling up the Grab app.

"We'll need to book four cars to get there."

Samantha's fingers moved swiftly over the screen as she opened the app, tapping on the "Car" option and setting the drop-off location to Marikina River Gold. She then nodded toward three others.

"Alright, I'll handle the first booking. Who's going to help with the others?"

Zark, ever eager to help, volunteered immediately.

"I'll book the second car."

Lawrence, his calm demeanor showing, added, "Guess I'm handling the third."

Angelica, her vibrant personality shining through, confirmed, "And I've got the last one."

Within moments, the four cars were on their way. Samantha double-checked the app to ensure all bookings were confirmed.

"Looks like we're set. The cars will be here in about five minutes."

As they gathered outside, waiting, the group chatted casually. Jerry, always curious, glanced over at Rommel.

"Hey, Rommel, did you see the way Dan fumbled with his phone just now? I thought he was the social engineering guy."

Danilo smirked, overhearing the comment.

"I'm better at talking my way past people than dealing with apps," he shot back.

"Leave the tech to the experts."

Rene, lighting a cigarette, added, "Let me know if you need a new excuse next time, Dan. I've got a list of them for any situation."

Christy, who was sharp and observant, leaned against the wall.

"You know, the more I hear about you guys, the more I realize just how dysfunctional this group actually is," she said with a playful grin.

"Well, if you're looking for perfect," Ricardo chimed in dryly, "you're definitely in the wrong place."

The cars arrived shortly after, and the team split into groups:

Car 1: Jane, Lawrence, Ricardo, Danilo, and Zark.

- Ricardo glanced over at Lawrence and said, "So, Lawrence, what's the craziest thing you've ever done on a dare?"

- Lawrence chuckled, his tone even.

"Once, in college, I swam across a pond in the middle of the night just because someone bet me I wouldn't do it. Almost lost my phone in the process."

- Danilo grinned. "A real risk-taker, huh?"

- Zark chimed in, "I'm just glad I wasn't there to film it. We'd still be watching the replay."

- Samantha, from the front seat, shook her head with a smile.

"That sounds like something you'd do, Lawrence."

Car 2: Christy, Bobby, Rene, Jobert, and Mike.

- Bobby turned to Rene.

"You look like the kind of guy who's got some interesting stories. What's the most ridiculous lie you've ever told just for fun?"

- Rene grinned.

"Told a guy at a party that I was a professional dog psychic. Spent half the night 'reading' dogs' minds. Even got a free drink out of it."

- Christy, rolling her eyes, said, "And people believed you?"

- Rene shrugged.

"People believe what they want to believe."

- Mike, always analytical, added, "I'm sure you gave them their money's worth."

Car 3: Jerry, Rommel, Dezer, Hiro, and Ericson.

- Rommel, ever the social one, asked, "If you could be any fictional character, who would it be?"

- Dezer replied without hesitation.

"Sherlock Holmes. Always had a thing for solving puzzles."

- Hiro nodded.

"That fits you, Dezer. I'd probably go for someone like Batman. More action, less talking."

- Jerry laughed.

"You just want the gadgets."

- Ericson grinned.

"I'd be Deadpool. Gets to break the fourth wall and still win every time."

Car 4: Angelica, Julia, Dominic, Jojo, and Glaiza.

- Angelica, ever cheerful, said, "Okay, random question. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?"

- Glaiza immediately answered, "Invisibility. Think of all the things you could do without anyone knowing."

- Jojo smirked.

"You'd probably just sneak into theaters to watch movies for free."

- Dominic added, "Telepathy would be cool, but I wouldn't want to know what everyone's thinking all the time."

- Julia, her tone calm and thoughtful, said, "I'd choose teleportation. Skip all the traffic and go wherever I want."

When they arrived at Marikina River Gold, the group spilled out onto the sidewalk, their spirits already lifted from the lively conversations. As they entered the upscale bar, they were greeted by the soft hum of jazz blending with the lively chatter of an upscale crowd. The interior boasted an elegant mix of modern and rustic decor, with dim lighting casting a warm glow over polished wood surfaces and plush seating.

Samantha led the way to the bar, her confidence unwavering.

"A bottle of your finest Glenlivet, please," she told the bartender, her choice reflecting her refined taste despite her rugged lifestyle.

As the bartender nodded and began to prepare the drink, Samantha turned back to the group.

"Alright, everyone, first round's on me. After that, you're on your own."

They gathered around a large, ornately carved wooden table. The pioneer members took the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of their new allies.

Zark, with his natural curiosity, turned to Bobby, his tone friendly yet probing.

"Bobby, what drew you into the world of covert ops and cyber battles?"

Bobby, always strategic, grinned.

"Well, Zark, it's the challenge of getting into places I'm not supposed to be. Plus, fighting the good fight has its thrill, doesn't it?"

Angelica, her lively personality shining through, chimed in.

"And what about you, Christy? How did you end up joining us?"

Christy, leaning back with a relaxed grin, shared her story.

"I saw the impact of information in the wrong hands during my time in the military. I wanted to use my skills for a greater good, and ZeroCrypt seemed the right place."

The conversation flowed naturally, moving from one member to another. Glaiza, with her quirky and playful nature, leaned forward.

"So, the original team, huh? What keeps you all driven to take such risks?"

Hiro, calm and composed, answered first.

"For me, it's about using our skills to make a significant difference, to correct wrongs where we see them. Plus, the excitement doesn't hurt."

Jojo, always the joker, grinned.

"And let's be honest, cracking into systems designed to be impregnable is pretty fun too."

Dominic, who had been quietly listening, took a sip of his drink before adding, "You know, there's a certain satisfaction in pulling apart what others think is flawless. It's like taking a puzzle and showing everyone else that they missed a piece."

Danilo, quick-witted as always, joined in.

"For me, it's simple: I like messing with people who think they're untouchable. It's not about the money; it's about the challenge."

Ricardo, with his dry sense of humor, chimed in.

"We all have our reasons, but in the end, it's the thrill that keeps us going. There's always a bigger system to take down."

As the drinks flowed, the atmosphere grew more relaxed, and the alcohol began to take effect. The members were tipsy, laughter came more easily, and the mood became playful.

Christy, who had a few drinks and was now feeling bold, wandered over to where Zark was seated. She leaned in close, her eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and attraction.

"Zark, you've been sitting over here for a while," she said in a teasing tone.

"Why don't you come and dance with me?"

Zark, already feeling the buzz, chuckled and replied, "I didn't know you were the dancing type, Christy."

Samantha, who had been sitting next to Zark, immediately tensed at the sight of Christy getting close. Her eyes narrowed just slightly as she took another sip of her drink. She leaned closer to Zark, her tone light but with an unmistakable hint of annoyance.

"You don't have to get up, Zark. I was just about to tell you a funny story."

Christy, sensing the subtle tension, didn't back down. She shot Samantha a playful smile.

"Oh, I'm sure Zark can listen to your story while we're dancing," she replied, placing a hand on Zark's shoulder.

Zark, caught in the middle, laughed nervously and glanced between the two women.

"I think I'm being fought over," he joked, trying to diffuse the situation.

Samantha crossed her legs, her smile a bit tighter now.

"Don't flatter yourself, Zark. I'm just keeping you company." She glanced pointedly at Christy.

"Besides, not everyone here needs to be dancing to have a good time."

Christy leaned in a little closer to Zark, her voice low and sultry.

"But why stay in one place when you can move around?"

Samantha huffed quietly, her tone still calm but edged with a bit of irritation.

"Suit yourself, Christy. Just don't trip over your own feet."

Zark, sensing that the situation needed more humor, grinned at Samantha.

"I'll make sure she doesn't," he said, standing up and allowing Christy to pull him towards the dance floor.

As Christy led Zark away, Samantha took a long sip from her glass, her expression softening as she watched them dance. She wasn't angry, but there was a flicker of something else in her eyes—perhaps a twinge of possessiveness she hadn't realized she had.

Back on the dance floor, Christy swayed to the rhythm, glancing back at Samantha with a satisfied smirk.

"Looks like I won this round," she teased, whispering to Zark.

Zark just chuckled. "You two are something else," he said, shaking his head in amusement.

"Don't worry, Samantha will get over it. She's tough."

After a while, Christy and Zark returned to the table, the playful tension having dissolved into laughter and casual conversation once more. Samantha, still seated, gave Zark a look as he sat down next to her again.

"Had fun?" she asked, her tone lighter now, a hint of a smirk on her lips.

"I survived," Zark replied, raising his glass in a toast to Samantha.

"To keeping things interesting."

Samantha clinked her glass against his, her competitive spirit already shifting back to its usual relaxed state.

"To staying on your toes," she added, shooting a quick glance at Christy, who was now chatting with Bobby across the table.

The night continued with laughter, banter, and a sense of camaraderie that felt refreshing after the intensity of their earlier meeting. They had just finished laying out their plans, and tomorrow, they would start preparing in earnest. Tonight was a chance to let loose before things got serious again.

The bartender came over with a second bottle of Glenlivet, compliments of a generous patron who recognized the group's aura of quiet confidence.

"This one's on the house," he said with a wink.

As they raised their glasses for another toast, Zark leaned in and whispered to Glaiza, "You know, for a group of hackers, we clean up pretty well."

Glaiza grinned, her playful demeanor shining through.

"You just wait. Give us another round and someone's going to start rapping."

As the night progressed, it was clear that this was more than a gathering—it was a bonding experience that helped solidify the unity of ZeroCrypt. Their casual conversations and shared stories reminded them of why they joined and the mission they had ahead.
