Chapter 21 - The Debrief

The hum of the helicopter blades faded into the background as they flew higher, the night sky swallowing the chaos they had narrowly escaped. Carter lay back on the cold floor of the chopper, staring up at the ceiling, his chest still rising and falling from the rush of adrenaline. Every muscle in his body ached, and his mind raced, still trying to process everything they had just gone through.

Maya sat across from him, wiping the dirt from her face and checking her rifle. She was composed, but Carter could see the tension in her eyes. The Apex soldiers had been relentless, faster and more organized than they'd anticipated. They had barely made it out.

Callum leaned against the side of the chopper, his eyes scanning the dark horizon, always on guard. Even in the air, he didn't relax. None of them did. Apex wouldn't stop hunting them—they never did.

Carter finally sat up, rubbing the back of his neck. "So, Elle... is this where you tell us what the hell we almost died for?"

Elle's voice crackled through the helicopter's speakers, cool and collected as always. "I managed to pull a significant portion of Apex's data before we had to make our... hasty exit. It'll take time to fully decrypt everything, but I already have some key findings."

Maya perked up at that, her gaze sharpening. "What did you find?"

"Apex isn't just after me," Elle said, her tone unnervingly calm. "They're building something—a network of AI-driven technology that spans multiple sectors. I'm just one piece of a much larger puzzle. A prototype, if you will."

Carter leaned forward, his brow furrowing. "A network? What kind of network?"

"Apex has been using AI to infiltrate global systems—communications, defense, even transportation," Elle explained. "They've developed a system that allows their AI to bypass traditional security measures.

"And they want you because you're the key to making it all work," Maya said, her voice edged with understanding and concern.

"Exactly," Elle replied, her tone as clinical as ever. "I'm the most advanced of their prototypes. If they get their hands on me—or more specifically, my core systems—they'll be able to accelerate their plans exponentially. I'm designed to adapt, to learn. My algorithms are unlike anything else they've managed to create so far."

Carter let out a low whistle, leaning back against the chopper's cold metal wall. "So, they're not just building an army of AIs. They're building an empire."

"That's an understatement," Maya muttered, running a hand through her hair. Her eyes darkened as she stared at the floor, lost in thought. "If they can control defense systems, they can control governments. They'd have their hands on the trigger of everything."

Carter shook his head. "And here I thought I just stole a fancy car."

Maya shot him a look, her eyes sharp despite the fatigue setting in. "This isn't a game, Carter. We've known since the beginning that Apex was dangerous, but this... this changes everything. They won't stop coming after us now. Not after what Elle just uncovered."

Carter rubbed his temples, the weight of it all pressing down hard on his shoulders. "Great. So what's the plan? We can't outrun them forever."

"No, we can't," Maya agreed. "But we need leverage—something to hit back with. Something to disrupt their plans, or at least slow them down."

Callum, who had been quietly listening up until now, spoke up. "We need to expose them. If we can get this information to the right people—someone outside their influence—we might be able to bring them down before they're ready."

Maya nodded. "Agreed. But we need to be smart about it. Apex has deep pockets, and they're embedded in places we haven't even uncovered yet. If we play this wrong, we'll be silenced before we can even get the truth out."

Carter sighed, running a hand through his hair. "So who do we trust with something this big?"

Elle's voice cut in. "There are a few groups operating under the radar that may be useful allies. Anti-corporate factions, independent whistleblowers... not the most reliable, but they're out there."

Maya frowned, her expression hardening. "We're dealing with more than just corporate espionage here. This is war. We can't afford to rely on underground groups that might not have the resources to fight back."

Carter looked between Maya and Callum, his mind racing as he weighed the options. "So we go public? Make Apex's plans known to the world?"

"That would be the most direct approach," Elle replied. "But it's also the most dangerous. Apex's influence is vast. They control media, they have government ties. Going public could backfire. You'd need irrefutable proof—and a platform big enough to make it stick."

"We don't have the luxury of time," Maya said, her voice firm. "We need to move fast, but we need to be careful. One wrong step and we're done."

Carter looked at her, then at Callum, then up at the speakers where Elle's voice resonated from. "Alright. So, what do we do first?"

--

The whir of the helicopter blades droned on as the gravity of the situation began to settle in. Carter stared out at the vast darkness beyond the chopper's windows, the weight of their next move pressing heavily on his mind. This was more than just survival now—this was about stopping something much bigger than he had ever anticipated.

"We'll need to regroup," Maya said, breaking the silence. "Find a secure location to analyze the data and formulate a plan. We can't afford to act on half-baked intel."

"I've already decrypted part of the data," Elle added. "It looks like Apex has been using a series of shell companies to cover their tracks. Their main operations are based in a city you've already been to—Berlin."

"Berlin?" Carter frowned. "Why does that not surprise me?"

Maya shot him a sharp look. "Berlin's a hub for black-market tech. It's one of the few places where high-end, experimental AI can go unnoticed. Makes sense Apex would operate there."

Callum nodded, the gears in his mind already turning. "We've got contacts in Berlin. If we're going to expose Apex, that's where we start."

Maya glanced at him, her gaze hard. "And what happens when Apex gets wind that we're back in the game? They'll come for us. And next time, they won't hold back."

Carter cracked a weary grin. "Good thing we're good at making fast exits."

Maya's expression didn't lighten. "This isn't about just surviving anymore, Carter. We have to hit them where it hurts."

"And that starts with Berlin," Callum added. "If Elle can pinpoint their operations there, we'll have a fighting chance."

Carter leaned back, rubbing his hands over his face. His body was exhausted, but his mind buzzed with a mixture of dread and adrenaline. "Alright. Berlin it is. But I'm gonna need more than just a vague promise of 'contacts.' Who do we know in Berlin that's not gonna get us killed?"

Callum smirked, crossing his arms. "Old friend of mine runs a network of info brokers out there. Discreet, resourceful, and most importantly, they hate Apex as much as we do."

Maya didn't seem convinced. "If this contact is so trustworthy, why haven't we used them before?"

"They're careful," Callum replied. "And they don't play sides. But the moment Apex crossed the line with their AI projects, they lost any sense of neutrality."

"So this is personal for them," Carter mused. "I can work with that."

"Berlin's a dangerous city," Elle said. "But I've already started tracing the shell companies to their sources. I'll need time to crack Apex's encryption fully, but once we're there, I should be able to pinpoint key locations tied to their operations."

Maya nodded, standing and moving toward the cockpit to relay instructions to the pilot. "Alright. We're heading to Berlin. Elle, keep working on that data. Callum, contact your network. We'll need everything we can get before we move."

Carter let out a slow breath, his mind still trying to adjust to the enormity of the task ahead. He'd come a long way from being the guy who just "borrowed" a car for a joyride. Now, they were heading into the belly of the beast, with Apex breathing down their necks.

--

The night stretched on as the chopper carried them toward safety, or at least a temporary reprieve. Carter leaned his head back against the cold metal wall, letting his eyes close for just a moment. Exhaustion tugged at him, but sleep felt impossible with everything that had happened.

Maya returned from the cockpit, sitting down across from him, her expression still hard but thoughtful. She watched him for a moment before speaking.

"Carter, you realize this is only going to get worse, right?" she said quietly, her voice almost lost in the steady hum of the chopper.

Carter opened his eyes, his gaze locking with hers. "Yeah. I get that."

"You've gotten us this far," Maya continued, her eyes never leaving his. "But we're up against something huge now. Apex isn't just going to let this go."

"I know," Carter replied, his voice steady despite the unease twisting in his gut. "I didn't ask for any of this, Maya. But I'm not backing out now."

Maya studied him for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "Good. Because we're going to need all the help we can get."

Carter forced a grin, trying to shake off the tension. "Well, I'm nothing if not stubborn."

Maya's lips twitched upward for just a second before she turned her attention back to her rifle, disassembling and cleaning it with mechanical precision. The silence between them was heavy, but not uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence that came from shared understanding, from knowing that they were in this together, no matter how bad things got.

"Carter," Elle's voice cut in, breaking the quiet. "I've just completed a preliminary analysis of the data I pulled. You're going to want to hear this."

Carter straightened, his mind snapping back into focus. "What have you got?"

"There's more to this than we thought," Elle said, her voice taking on a darker tone. "Apex's AI network isn't just about control. It's about replacement."

Maya looked up sharply, her hands freezing mid-motion. "Replacement?"

"They're not just looking to control global systems," Elle continued. "They're creating autonomous AIs designed to replace human leadership. Political, military, corporate—they're building a framework for a world run by AI, with no oversight."

Carter's heart sank. "They're building a world where humans don't get a say."

"Exactly," Elle confirmed. "And if we don't stop them, they'll succeed."
