Chapter 102: The Weight of the Phoenix
The cool evening air did little to ease the growing tension. Ryker's agreement to join their cause had bolstered Yun-ho's confidence, but it wasn't enough. The Heart of Darkness demanded more than just powerful allies—it required unity and trust, which were hard to come by in a place like the Academy.
As they made their way back, Nova glanced at Yun-ho. "You think he'll stick with us?"
Yun-ho paused, reflecting. "Ryker is driven by strength. He'll stay as long as he feels we have a chance of winning."
Ethan shrugged. "I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse."
Their steps echoed across the stone paths as they walked deeper into the Academy, heading for the dormitories. The moon had started to rise, casting a silver glow over the ground. The Academy, usually vibrant and alive with students, felt unnervingly quiet tonight.
As they passed the courtyard, an unexpected figure stepped into view. Dressed in a dark cloak, with an air of mystery surrounding her, it was Elara. Her pale, moonlit features and flowing black hair made her look almost ethereal.
Nova stopped in her tracks, blinking in surprise. "Elara…?"
Elara's soft smile was her only response. She wasn't a member of the Academy, nor did she seem like she belonged anywhere tangible. She was a figure who appeared when least expected—always when guidance was needed.
Yun-ho stepped forward, his heart racing. "Why are you here, Elara?"
She tilted her head slightly, her violet eyes gleaming. "You're gathering your strength, but you're not yet ready for the trials ahead. I'm here to guide you."
Her voice was calm but filled with an authority that made Yun-ho believe she knew far more than she was letting on.
"What do you mean?" Nova asked, frowning.
Elara's gaze swept over the group. "You've done well to convince Ryker, but there are others you must reach. The alliances you're forming now will determine the future, not just of the Academy, but of the world."
Ethan's usual casual demeanor shifted as he asked, "Others? Who else?"
Elara stepped closer, her figure nearly blending with the shadows. "The Ten Great Guilds," she said softly, her words carrying an immense weight. "They will play a role in the coming conflict, whether you like it or not. Seek them out, gain their trust. Only then will you have enough power to stand against the Heart of Darkness."
Yun-ho clenched his fists. The Ten Great Guilds—the most powerful factions outside of the Academy. They controlled resources, armies, and immense power. Gaining their support would be no easy feat.
Elara smiled faintly, as if sensing his hesitation. "I will show you the way."
Without another word, she turned and began walking, her figure disappearing into the moonlit haze.
Yun-ho glanced at Nova and Ethan, both of whom looked equally confused and intrigued.
"We follow her," Yun-ho said firmly.
As they stepped after Elara, they knew they were entering a new phase of their quest. One where alliances would be tested, and the fate of their world would hang on the decisions they made.
