The clearing stood frozen, the tension crackling in the air like lightning before a storm. Arin's hand remained inches away from the glowing artifact, the fiery energy still pulsing through his veins. But now, Cyboon, the leader of the Shadows of Oblivion, loomed before him—an ominous presence cloaked in darkness. His aura was suffocating, and his dark eyes pierced through Arin as if reading every thought and intention.
Karya had already drawn her bow, an arrow made of light nocked and aimed at Cyboon. Her gaze darted between the dark sage and the shadows creeping from the treeline, where more members of the Shadows of Oblivion lurked, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Cyboon smiled faintly, as though amused by their defiance. "You've been meddling in matters far beyond your understanding, boy," he said, his voice deep and laced with menace. "That relic you've touched… it's not meant for you."
Arin's hand tingled as he pulled it back from the artifact. He could still feel the power flowing through him, but he knew Cyboon wasn't here just for a friendly chat.
"I'm not afraid of you," Arin said, standing his ground, though his mind raced with strategies. He could feel the fire element within him react to the artifact, ready to burst forth, but something held him back. He needed to be smarter. If he made a reckless move now, Cyboon would crush him.
Cyboon's expression darkened. "Perhaps you should be."
With a subtle flick of his hand, the shadows around the clearing began to shift. From the darkness emerged three figures, their bodies wreathed in dark energy, their faces obscured by cloaks. They moved silently, graceful yet filled with malice.
"Shadows, handle the girl. Leave the boy to me."
The figures lunged toward Karya with lightning speed. She reacted just as quickly, firing her arrow at the first attacker. The light-imbued arrow hit its mark, dispersing the shadowy figure into a swirl of black smoke. But the other two closed in fast.
Karya twisted and leapt backward, her movements as fluid as a dancer's. She fired another arrow, narrowly missing the second figure as it slashed at her with a dark, curved blade.
Arin barely had time to process the sudden assault. His instinct screamed at him to help Karya, but Cyboon was already in front of him, moving with the eerie swiftness of a predator.
"You've made a grave mistake, Arin," Cyboon said, raising his hand. Dark energy gathered in his palm, forming a dense sphere of void-like power. "But it's not too late to surrender."
Arin clenched his fists, his body instinctively channeling the fire and earth elements. The ground beneath him rumbled, responding to his will as flames coiled around his arms. "I don't surrender," Arin growled.
With a surge of energy, Arin slammed his hands into the ground. The earth quaked violently, large chunks of rock rising up between him and Cyboon. At the same moment, flames erupted from his fists, launching toward Cyboon in a fiery wave.
But Cyboon was fast—too fast. With a wave of his hand, the dark sage dissolved into shadow, reappearing behind Arin in an instant. His dark sphere of energy shot toward Arin's back, but Arin had already anticipated the move.
He spun around, summoning a barrier of hardened earth just in time. The dark energy crashed against the barrier with a deafening roar, shattering the stone but sparing Arin from the brunt of the attack.
"You're not the only one who knows tricks," Arin said, breathing heavily.
Cyboon's expression didn't change, but his eyes glinted with a mixture of curiosity and annoyance. "You've learned well… but not enough."
Meanwhile, Karya was locked in a deadly dance with the shadow assassins. She moved with precision, her arrows of light slicing through the dark air like streaks of lightning. The second assassin fell to the ground, disintegrating into smoke, but the third was relentless.
It lunged at her with its blade, and she parried the blow with the light-woven string of her bow. The clash of dark and light energy sent shockwaves rippling through the forest. Karya backflipped out of reach, firing an arrow mid-air that grazed the assassin's shoulder.
The creature hissed, its form flickering as it reformed from the shadows. It lunged again, faster than before, and Karya barely had time to dodge. The assassin's blade grazed her arm, leaving a thin trail of darkness in its wake.
Karya gritted her teeth, the cold energy spreading through the wound. She had to end this quickly. Summoning all her focus, she nocked another arrow and fired—this time aiming for the ground beneath the assassin.
The arrow struck the earth, exploding in a burst of brilliant light that engulfed the shadowy figure. It shrieked as the light consumed it, its form dissolving into nothingness.
Panting, Karya spun around to check on Arin, only to see him locked in a fierce battle with Cyboon.
Cyboon's movements were a blur as he attacked Arin from all angles. Shadows swirled around him, lashing out with dark tendrils, while Arin countered with bursts of flame and pillars of earth. Each strike Cyboon unleashed was heavier than the last, but Arin held his ground, though barely.
"You're strong, boy," Cyboon said, his voice filled with dark amusement. "But you don't understand the true power of darkness."
Cyboon raised both hands, and the shadows around him coalesced into a massive sphere of dark energy, pulsing with malevolent force. The air itself seemed to grow colder, the light around them dimming as the sphere expanded.
"Let me show you."
With a grunt of effort, Arin slammed his foot into the ground, sending a wave of fire and earth toward Cyboon. The flames roared to life, twisting into a fiery serpent that snaked through the air, aiming straight for Cyboon.
But Cyboon merely smirked and released the sphere.
The dark energy clashed with Arin's attack, and for a moment, it seemed like the fiery serpent might hold its own. But the darkness was too overwhelming. The sphere expanded, consuming the fire, the earth, and everything in its path.
Arin's eyes widened. He had seconds to react.
In desperation, he threw up an earthen barrier, layering it with fire to harden it into a molten shield. The dark energy smashed into it, and for a heart-stopping moment, the world went black.
When the dust settled, Arin was on one knee, his barrier shattered, and his energy drained. He could barely keep himself upright. The sheer power of Cyboon's attack had nearly obliterated him.
Cyboon walked forward slowly, his face calm, his eyes glowing with dark power. "You're out of your league, boy."
Arin clenched his fists, his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn't give up—not now. Not when he had come so far.
But as Cyboon raised his hand for the finishing blow, something unexpected happened.
A bright, radiant light shot through the air, slamming into Cyboon's outstretched hand. The dark sage recoiled in surprise, the light burning through the shadows like a beam from the heavens.
Arin looked up, his vision blurry, and saw Karya standing beside him, her bow still glowing with the light of her arrow.
"Not on my watch," Karya said, her voice steady despite the exhaustion on her face.
Cyboon scowled, his dark energy swirling around him as he prepared to strike again, but then he paused. His eyes shifted toward the artifact still embedded in the ground, glowing more intensely than ever before.
Arin felt it too—a shift in the air, a pulsing energy that seemed to come from the relic itself.
Before any of them could react, the artifact emitted a blinding flash of light, and the ground beneath them trembled violently. The force of the energy sent Cyboon stumbling backward, his form flickering as if destabilized.
"Impossible," he muttered, his eyes narrowing at the artifact.
Arin and Karya exchanged a glance, both realizing that something far more powerful than any of them was at play.
Cyboon glared at them one last time before dissolving into the shadows. "This isn't over, Arin. The Shadows of Oblivion will find you again."
And with that, he vanished, leaving the clearing silent except for the soft hum of the glowing artifact.
Arin collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily, his body aching from the battle. Karya knelt beside him, inspecting his wounds.
"You okay?" she asked.
Arin nodded weakly. "Yeah… just need a minute."
They both turned to look at the artifact, still glowing with that strange, fiery energy.
"What do you think it is?" Karya asked, her voice filled with awe.
Arin shook his head. "I don't know… but I think we just found something big."
As they stared at the relic, both couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something far greater—and far more dangerous.
To be continued…
