Chapter 3 - What Role?!

"You can just call me Roth!"

The adventurer says with a gleeful smile. The lady smirks and continues:

"Okay Roth, lets see the rest of your form".

The lady starts to playfully scan the paper but as she reads the more detailed information, such as the Adventure ID Code, her mood starts to shift. She looks up to glance at Roth's appearance and back down to the paper as she continues to read; She can't fathom the thought of a young teen actually being an adventurer.

"He could've made this up...Yeah that's it. He probably has researched a bit before coming here, I'll just pretend to consider and send him away." She thinks to herself as she clears her throat and begins to say:

"Okay Kid, I'll review it and let you know in a few-"

"Oh Wait Miss! I have a Guild Card, this might help."

Roth interjects again and presents a metallic card which holds his information and a tiny symbol at the top right corner. The clerk lady freezes for a moment before quickly snatching the card and examining it with an unseen vigor.

"This...This can't be...Guild Cards are only issued to high ranking or special adventurers."

She murmurs to herself in disbelief. The other guild staff, noticing her reaction, begin to crowd around her and moments later the counter is overrun with chaos as everyone tries to inspect the card or comprehend the situation.

A few minutes later Roth is seated on a velvet sofa, in the private meeting chambers of the Guild House and being served herbal tea, as the guild master verifies the authenticity of the card at a distant desk. The clerk lady fiddles with her finger as she sits on the opposite sofa, praying to the Gods for the card to be fake, sparing her the reprimands of the Guild Master. Roth peacefully adds sugar cubes to the tea just as the Guild Master, an old burly guy dressed in a suit, lets out a defeated and regretful sigh as he says in his low and gentleman-like voice:

"The card checks out, the insignia of Golten on the top right is legit."

He glares at the lady with professional malice making it obvious what he expects her to do now. The lady yelps for a second as she feels his eyes boring onto her back and she takes in a long breathe....And suddenly jerks her head down in a bow, blurting out:

"I AM SO SORRY! PLEASE FORGIVE MY BLATANT IGNORANCE!"

Roth who was enjoying his sweet herbal drink gets startled for a second and spills a bit of the tea but quickly regains composure as he says :

"Ah! Don't be! I'm used to it by now." Roth says with a chuckle as he raises his hands in a placating notion to deescalate the tension "Please raise your head."

She slowly raises her head back with a sorrowful expression and the guild master lets out an exhausted sigh as he walks over to the velvet sofas. He stands beside the lady and says:

"My apologies Mister Rothfork."

The Guild Master hands the card back to Roth and gently slaps the lady's head as he continues saying:

"My name is Barthemus and this dunce here is Lilian."

"Nice to meet you two, and please don't hold it against her. Most people don't believe me at first." Roth says as he sets down the cup and pockets the card. "So...Miss Lilian? May I take a look at the quest sheet now?"

"Certainly!" she says as she rushes to retrieve the quest sheet, leaving Barthemus alone with the aloof adventurer. Barthemus clears his throat and starts making small talk to break the ice, which is easy to do as Roth is happy to oblige in any conversation thrown at him.

After some talks about the taste of the local bread, the reasoning behind the Guild's choice of flooring and their new shared interest in insects, Mister Barthemus had almost forgotten that Roth was a stranger. As the conversation goes on, he remembers that there was an issue with Roth's check-in form.

"Mister Roth-"

"Just Roth is fine!"

Barthemus smiles warmly at Roth's Humble attitude and and tries to break his formal tone to converse with the cheerful young man.

"Okay...Roth, I heard you ran into some issues when completing the check-in form?"

"Oh Yes! My role wasn't on the list."

"That's weird..." Barthemus says as he checks the form to make sure all possible roles are present. He then looks up and asks:

"May I inquire what's your role?"

"An Event Transcriber!"

Roth replies with a proud smile. Barthemus is bewildered with the answer as he had never heard of such a role. He inquires again with an unsure tone and expression.

" A t-transcriber?"

"YEP! I'm an event transcriber, you can check the back of the card, it's written there."

Roth takes the card back out and hands it to Barthemus, who takes it with a skeptical look. He flips the card and sure enough, on the back, in bold letters he finds:

"ROTHFORK, THE OFFICIAL EVENT TRANSCRIBER OF THE ADVENTURER'S GUILD"

Barthemus is left speechless for a few seconds as he thinks of how to respond to this situation. He chooses not to bother Roth after everything they had already done and decides to investigate the topic further when he is gone.

"Y-Yes...A transcriber...umm...we must have forgot to add that to the list" he says as he feigns a professional mistake, trying to mask the confusion enveloping him at the mention of the foreign role. He quickly sketches a makeshift box at the list of roles and checks it. He hands the card back but not before examining it in detail, to avoid any future surprises with the object. As he hands the card back, Barthemus says:

"So Mister Ro-I mean Roth, may I ask what is the purpose of your visit to our humble Cortfel branch?"

"My ink splattered on Cortfel, so I decided to visit."

Roth says instantaneously with a smiling face, acting as if its the most natural and reasonable answer which needs no further context.
