The autumn air is crisp as Mayu and Kyle stroll through the park, leaves crunching beneath their feet. It was Mayu's idea to visit the park, and Kyle agreed, grateful for the chance to spend time with her in a relaxed setting. They walk side by side, talking easily about their childhoods, exchanging stories about school, hobbies, and favorite places. The conversation flows naturally, with the kind of familiarity that only comes from spending countless hours together.
"I used to come here with my family when I was younger," Mayu says, her eyes distant as she looks around. "We'd have picnics by the lake."
Kyle smiles. "That sounds nice. My family wasn't big on picnics, but we did go hiking sometimes."
Mayu tilts her head, curious. "You? Hiking?"
Kyle chuckles. "Yeah, hard to believe, right? I wasn't always such a city boy."
As they walk, a gust of wind sweeps through the park, sending a flurry of leaves dancing around them. Mayu shivers slightly, and without thinking, Kyle gently pulls her closer, his arm brushing against hers. The touch is brief, but it sends a jolt through both of them, leaving an unspoken tension in the air. Mayu's cheeks flush, and she glances away, pretending to focus on the path ahead.
They eventually find a bench beneath a large oak tree, its branches stretching high above them. Sitting down, Mayu leans back and sighs contentedly. Kyle watches her for a moment, his heart skipping a beat as the sunlight catches in her hair, making it shimmer. There's something about this moment, something quiet and intimate, that makes him want to say more, to reach out and break the barrier between them.
"Kyle," Mayu says suddenly, her voice soft. "Do you ever think about the future?"
He blinks, caught off guard by the question. "Uh, sometimes. Why?"
"I don't know," she murmurs, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "I just wonder where we'll end up. You and me."
Kyle's breath catches in his throat. He wants to say something, anything, to acknowledge the weight of her words. But instead, he hesitates, unsure of how to respond.
"Whatever happens," he says slowly, "I hope we stay close."
Mayu turns to him, her eyes meeting his. For a moment, the world around them seems to fade away, leaving only the two of them and the quiet promise that lingers in the air. But before either of them can say more, a group of children runs past, laughing and playing, breaking the moment.
Kyle clears his throat, shifting awkwardly on the bench. "We should, uh, probably head back."
"Yeah," Mayu agrees, standing up and brushing off her jeans. "Let's go."
As they walk back toward the park entrance, the unspoken tension between them remains, heavier than before. Neither of them says anything, but both are acutely aware that something has changed.
