Marissa sobs in her mother's arms, and I let loose a long sigh.

Dad squeezes my shoulder. "We're still alive."
"Yeah."
"But what does that mean?" Marian asks, stroking Marissa's hair. "What is this end—"
The world explodes.
A deafening boom shatters the eerie silence, and the ground beneath us lurches violently. My stomach drops as if I'm on a roller coaster. Thankfully, we're sitting, or else I would have fallen.
Marissa's scream pierces the air, followed closely by Marian's. Their voices blend into a single shrill sound of terror that sets my teeth on edge.
"What's happening?" Randall's groggy voice cuts through the chaos. He bolts upright, eyes wide and unfocused. "Is it... is this the end of the world?"
I meet Dad's gaze, a silent understanding passing between us. Without a word, we both lunge for the windows.
