Chapter 14 - The Lone Ishayan

The man gave me some kind of food that sort of resembled steak. "Sevva", he called it. At first, I was wary of eating it with blood-soaked hands, but I quickly realized that while I was asleep he cleaned me up. Kinda gross... "Thanks!"

The man gave me some kind of food that sort of resembled steak. "Sevva", he called it. At first, I was wary of eating it with blood-soaked hands, but I quickly realized that while I was asleep he cleaned me up. Kinda gross... "Thanks!" The steak was delicious. However, my ravenous hunger only allowed me to enjoy its scrumptious taste for a few seconds. The mysterious man gave a small chuckle as I swallowed the last remains. "Wow, you really liked the Sevva! Tell me, is the poison working yet?" Poison? Crap! Mom even told me to never accept food from a stranger, what the hell did he- A booming laughter penetrated through my confusion and despair. "Just kidding!" He was clutching his stomach from laughing so hard. Great. The person who saved me is an eccentric loudmouth. He's probably attracted every one of those corpses now. "Kik kik kik!" I summoned my sword as the man laughed. What's so funny about being torn apart? As I looked at the corpses again, I realized they were just standing there. Standing in the doorway. I looked back at the man to see him waving a device. "When I woke up I had this on me. It seems that it's able to hold those critters at bay." "What do you mean woke up? Like from the tubes." He laughed, doing his best to highlight the idiocy of my question. Of course, he did Miko. But then why did he say 'this device'? Shouldn't he know what it is? "Yes, I woke up from one of those tubes. It was a... surreal feeling. To see all those people who look so... familiar, yet distant." "Wait, so you're not one of them?" He tilted his head down to the ground. "I don't know if I'm being honest. I think I have some affiliation with them though. I don't remember anything, except my language and my name, Farvakhin." He raised his head laughing "That means all the embarrassing shit I did is probably forgotten!" I stared at him blankly. I guess when you forget all your attachments to the world, you can become carefree. "I was lucky to wake up with this device on me, though. Have you seen those things?" He made an exaggerated tearing motion with his hands. "They tear apart flesh like it's a kusha!" "What's a Kusha?" At first, he had a light in his eyes, as if he was going to explain something he's very passionate about. But that light quickly disappeared as he lowered his head dejectedly. "I don't remember, actually. But I guess it's something that's supposed to be torn apart!" He threw the device into the air and then caught it. Careful! "Man, this amnesia thing is a doozy!" Well, at least he's taking this situation in stride. I looked over at the corpses, staying rigid externally but internally I was shaking. Fravakhin threw 2 more steaks on the fire, exciting both my stomach and the corpses. Kik kik kik! Wait, how did he make the fire? I saw a little box on the ground underneath the fire. "You sure know how to operate their technology." The man was studying the steak, making sure to flip it at the most opportune moment. He was a fantastic chef. "Yea. I've been able to deduce that I was probably a part of this society. I guess they used the tubes for self-preservation, but a side effect is amnesia. At first, I thought they created the tubes to hide from the corpses, but ya know. We got our mcguffin right here!" He smiled as he waved the device. Kik kik kik! I guess the corpses took offense to him flaunting that device around. But he raises a good point. I could see them using the tubes as a defense against the corpses, an attempt to outlive them. The device throws a huge wrench into that entire idea though. If they could just keep them at bay this easily, there would be no reason to hide. Thinking back to the book in the classroom, I had an idea. "Hey, you can read their language, right?" He didn't lift his eyes from the steak. "Yeah, I can read. Why, need a bedtime story?" Rolling my eyes, I replied "No. It's just, one of the rooms I saw was a classroom. But I- couldn't read the books. I was just thinking, maybe they had some sort of answers as to what's going on here." "Interesting." He flipped the steak. "Yeah, I was thinking that maybe we could go there after our meal." He glanced over to the corpses, this time with worry. "Yeah, I'd rather not test the limits of this device. Don't wanna ruin my good looks, ya know." He cracked a smile. I understood his fear, but he also hadn't seen my strength. Although scary, I don't know if these things were much of a threat. I've already killed 4. Wait. I opened up the stats menu and felt my soul tremble. Souls: 8. Those things... didn't have a soul. What the hell are those things, devoid of humanity? Well, there's a small comfort. If they can die I can kill them. I summoned my sword and looked at him. "We'll be fine. I got your back." He smiled, saying "Nice toy!" It's not a toy jackass! "I-it's stronger than it looks. I've already killed 4 of those things." "Yeah, I saw that." He handed me a steak. Wait. "If you were able to get me then, why are you afraid of them now? Y- you've already walked right through their territory." He raised his brow as he bit down into the steak, juice guzzling down his cleanshaven face. The tubes have a top-of-the-line hygiene system! "Eat your food." I could tell he was hiding something, but noting his ghastly expression I decided against pressing the issue. Whatever it was... wasn't something he was looking to discuss. Still, we need answers. And I'm not going to stay here forever. I have a Leviathan to kill. Then after that, Vakash. Then, the... demon lord. "I don't know what happened to you, but I need you to be brave," I said before chowing down on the steak. Delicious. "Eh, I'd rather stay alive." He shrugged, showing that he was content living his life here. Not an option. "Fine. I hope that device gives you a long and happy life." Finishing my steak, I got up and prepared myself to leave. "Ok. I mean, if you wanna stay I'm fine with that! Plenty of steaks to share. But if not, I understand. This place... has probably pushed a few to suicide." I looked back to see tears forming in his eyes. "There was this girl... that woke up with me. We had stayed together for a while but... eventually, she went out looking for a way to escape. If you see her... help." Girl? She thrashed against me, tearing apart the fabrics of her muscles as she tried to escape. In the end, she turned into a bloody pile of bones. That girl? What the hell... I can't leave him behind then. "Farvakhin, you're coming with me." He looked up, attempting a smile. "No, I think I-" I picked him up by the scruff of his shirt, glaring at him. "You're coming, conscious or not." My voice started to falter. "I'm not leaving you here to die, understand!" He quickly gave up the fight, going limp in my arms. I had to catch the device as it slipped from his hand. "Fine." In one quick motion, I killed the 4 corpses who had been waiting for us. I looked out the hall to see if any others were waiting for us, but all I saw was blood. Everywhere! Scanning again for danger, but seeing none, I motioned for him to follow. Hopefully, the device keeps these things away from us. It noticeably made killing those 4 easy. But if not... I clenched my sword. Fight. We trekked through multiple hallways, over countless dead bodies- to the point it took all my concentration not to crush them with my boots. Audible gasping followed me. Hopefully, he doesn't recognize the girl... he shouldn't anyway. I don't know how, but I knew that girl was the one he was talking about. While trapped in my thoughts I almost missed the 5 corpses in front of us. Holding my arm out, Farvakhin stopped behind me, seeing them himself. His earlier eccentricity was now forgotten. He was a terrified man, forcing himself forward with every step, even as instinct told him to go the other way. Fight instinct! Don't run! I quickly dispatched 3 of them, but then one of the corpses punched me into the wall. As my vision blurred, I heard a primal scream followed by a snarl. No! Unable to see, I used my other senses to locate the corpses. Launching myself at them, I cut one's head off as I heard flesh tear. A scream. No!!! Sending a wild flurry of blind slashes, I felt my sword hacking through something. Followed by a silence only filled by a permeating gasp. Holding on to life. My vision returned, and I saw him lying on the ground, his left arm almost completely torn off. I have magic to save him!!! "He- healing touch!" Attempt failed: The poison is too deep. What? No! The more you understand the spell, the more you can combat it. Maybe... it'll be the same here for the poison! I thought back to when I had been affected. I lost my humanity as I devolved into a corpse. All my emotions were gone. My healing had to reach that level. A level beyond humanity. Ok! "HEALING TOUCH!!!" A cough. Another. I saw his shoulder repairing itself. Attempt successful.
