As a pure Grass-type Pokémon, Bellossom was naturally countered by Fire, Bug, Flying, Ice, and Poison types.
Among the 18 Pokémon types, only the Rock type can effectively counter four of these: Fire, Bug, Flying, and Ice.
With Bellossom gaining Rock-type Hidden Power, it's a truly fortunate development—this means she would no longer lack a counter to Pokémon with Fire, Bug, Flying, or Ice moves in future battles.
At the very least, Bellossom won't find herself in a defenseless position like she did in her last battle with a Fearow.
Moreover, Hidden Power was a special ranged move, and if Bellossom's level increased a bit more, she might naturally learn Quiver Dance, a powerful move that enhanced three key stats.
Combining Quiver Dance with Rock-type Hidden Power would allow her to turn battles in her favor completely.
After completing the Hidden Power attribute tests for all five combat Pokémon, Sato considered their training plans and assigned their next sessions.
Golbat and Bellossom were tasked with training their Hidden Power moves. Nidoran was assigned to work on his newly acquired Thunderbolt move; Growlithe would be practicing his new Double Team move, and the freshly joined Mudkip would start stamina training.
Through a TM and learning machine, Nidoran had learned the technique for Thunderbolt, but because he lacked an Electric-type affinity and with Electric-type energy being naturally volatile, he currently could barely manage more than faint sparks, let alone execute a real Thunderbolt.
Sato had a solution to help Nidoran with his Thunderbolt training, thanks to the connections he built by offering his Pokémon healing services.
Earlier that morning, Sato had met another Trainer with a Magneton while treating his Pokémon.
After healing the Pokémon free of charge and providing 20,000 PokeDollars as compensation, Sato managed to borrow the Magneton.
The reason Sato borrowed this Magneton was simple—it possessed a move called Electric Terrain, which could greatly aid Nidoran in his Thunderbolt training.
(Electric Terrain is an Electric-type status move that lasts for five turns, turning the field into an Electric Terrain where grounded Pokémon can't fall asleep, and Electric moves are strengthened.)
"Come on out, Magneton. I'll need your help creating a small Electric Terrain," Sato called out.
As Nidoran began his Thunderbolt practice, Sato released Magneton from a standard PokeBall.
Magneton, already briefed by its Trainer, didn't panic upon release. It immediately emitted three strong electric currents from its magnets.
Guided by Magneton, these yellow currents spread into the ground below, and as the flow continued, a five-meter radius around Magneton began to hum with bursts of electricity.
The ground seemed to be dyed yellow, as if coated with an electric charge, and the air was alive with an unusual intensity of Electric-type energy.
In the middle of this Electric Terrain, Sato felt his hair and body hair rising slightly. His skin tingled, and even the slightest movement produced a faint crackle of static.
At the same time, Nidoran, standing in the Electric Terrain, could finally feel the vibrant Electric-type energy buzzing around him.
With the help of his mental power to steadily draw in the energy, Nidoran was finally able to gather the unruly Electric-type energy bit by bit, eventually channeling it to his horn and emitting a faint current from its tip.
Clearly, having Magneton's Electric Terrain boosted Nidoran's training efficiency for Thunderbolt. Although he could only produce a weak current for now, it was an excellent start.
"Well done, Nidoran! Keep up that momentum—once you've mastered Thunderbolt, you'll be able to handle any Water-type Pokémon in the ocean!" Sato encouraged as he watched Nidoran playfully manipulating the electric current he had gathered, creating different shapes with it using his psychic abilities.
Due to Golbat's Electric-type Hidden Power, Sato had him practice within the Electric Terrain as well. Golbat's progress in mastering Hidden Power was fairly steady.
With Nidoran and Golbat's new skills on track, Growlithe was also advancing with his Double Team move.
Sato had taught him this move using a Double Team TM he acquired from the leader of the Wild Wolf Gang in Viridian City.
(Note: Double Team is a Normal-type status move that allows the user to create clones by moving quickly, confusing opponents and raising evasion.)
Double Team's effectiveness largely depends on a Pokémon's speed—the faster the user, the more clones they can produce in a short time.
For Growlithe, who had already mastered Flame Charge, a move that enhances his speed, Double Team was a perfect match. After a bit of practice, he was able to produce two precise copies while standing still.
Moreover, as Growlithe heated up his body using Flame Charge, with Flame Charge's speed boost, Growlithe could even create six stationary clones simultaneously.
Currently, Growlithe was running around an area while performing Double Team. Sato set a minimum requirement that Growlithe must produce at least three running clones alongside him.
But it was evident that Growlithe, who was just beginning to practice Double Team, hadn't quite perfected the technique. He could only produce one running clone at a time so far.
In Sato's vision, Growlithe would use Double Team mainly for close-range assaults, confusing opponents and reducing their ability to counter his approach.
Double Team also enhanced Growlithe's evasion, helping him avoid attacks when he was launching an attack or retreating from an assault.
In short, pairing Double Team with his speed-focused approach would make Growlithe even more agile and evasive, giving him more control in battle as he maneuvered around his enemies.
