The SUV sped through the city, weaving through traffic.
Gu Xun's phone beeped again. "Backup's arrived. We're clear."
Ling Wei's tension eased, replaced by relief.
Jiang Jian's eyes flickered open, his gaze locking onto hers.
"Thank you," he whispered.
Ling Wei smiled softly. "We're almost home."
The SUV turned onto a quiet street, stopping at a secure compound.
Gu Xun helped Ling Wei and Jiang Jian out.
Inside, the medic waited, ready to tend to Jiang Jian's wounds.
Ling Wei watched, her heart still racing.
Gu Xun approached her. "You did great, Ling Wei."
She nodded, exhaustion creeping in.
Jiang Jian's voice called out, "Ling Wei."
She turned, meeting his gaze.
"Thank you... for believing me."
Ling Wei's smile returned. "Always."
With Jiang Jian safe, Ling Wei's world settled back into place.
The chase was over. They'd made it home.
Ling Wei sat beside Jiang Jian's bed, watching him sleep.
The medic had done an excellent job, but Jiang Jian's recovery would take time.
Gu Xun entered, his expression serious. "Ling Wei, we need to talk."
Ling Wei nodded, following Gu Xun outside.
"The enemy's identity is still unknown," Gu Xun said. "But we've found a lead."
Ling Wei's eyes narrowed. "What kind of lead?"
"A suspicious transaction linked to an underground organization."
Ling Wei's grip on her phone tightened. "We need to investigate."
Gu Xun nodded. "I've already started. But Ling Wei, you need rest too."
Ling Wei shook her head. "Not until Jiang Jian's safe."
Gu Xun's expression softened. "He's safe now. You've done enough."
Ling Wei's gaze drifted back to Jiang Jian's room.
She knew Gu Xun was right, but her mind wouldn't settle.
_Flashback_
Memories of the chase flooded Ling Wei's thoughts.
Jiang Jian's whispered warning.
The SUV's screeching tires.
Gunfire and shattered glass.
Ling Wei's breath quickened, her heart racing.
Gu Xun's voice broke the spell. "Ling Wei, you're safe."
She turned, forcing a smile. "Thanks, Gu Xun."
But the memories lingered, haunting her.
