ISABELLA
I sat at my desk, pouring over Savino's records, my eyes scanning the pages for any sign of inconsistency. I had no choice but to help him with this case, even though I hadn't agreed to it. I wouldn't want to do something that would harm whoever I snag to be against.
I was determined to get to the bottom of Savino's case, before accepting.
As I delved deeper into the records, I noticed a pattern. Domenico Savino had been brought to court multiple times, but he had never shown up.
The cases would simply be canceled, and Savino would walk free. It was infuriating.
I decided to investigate further, focusing on a specific case involving a golden statue.
As I read through the files, I realized that the statue was an heirloom, passed down through generations of a powerful family.
But what shocked me was the value of the statue. It was worth a small fortune. The Savinos are part of a rich family. I couldn't understand why Savino had taken this case so seriously.
What was his connection to the man, and why had he gone to such great lengths to prosecute the trespasser after regaining his status?
Still, in deep frustration, I heard a knock, I looked up, placing my glasses well.
"Come in," Camilla walked into my office, a teasing tone in her voice.
"So, now that you are the vice chairman, are you going to avoid me too and not have lunch with me?" she asked, a sly smile spreading across her face.
I rolled my eyes and watched her But dropped my bag onto the table. "I don't get why you don't want me opening this bag, and why the fuck it's that heavy."
One thing I love about Camilla is how she never trespasses, she is the kind that respects one's privacy. And that is a great thing I am proud of.
"Thanks for not checking it, I appreciate it." I thanked and she gave me a weird look, pretty sure she was wondering what I was talking about.
"So now I didn't check, can you tell me about you needing just this bag," I sighed, shaking my head.
Camilla was always like this, she might not do things about permission but can surely push my buttons and try to get a rise out of me.
But I wasn't going to let her distract me. I had a job to do, and I was going to see it through, no matter what.
"Camilla, please I am busy… can you just let this afternoon be out of it?" I asked and the little smile on her face disappeared.
"You are acting differently, I am supposed to know about how things are going. We are childhood best friends for damn sake.
"Sorry about that Camilla, I am only trying to get Savino's case settled." I let out truthfully and handed her the files.
Camilla's eyes widened as she examined the case files. "I have heard of this case, but I never thought it would be assigned to you," she said, her voice laced with concern.
I frowned, feeling a sense of trepidation. "What's so special about this case? And why is it handed to me" I asked, my curiosity piqued.
"Because you are the best prosecutor in town now, and Domenico wouldn't want it to be another prosecutor because you could later use it against him."
Camilla roughed her hair, looking frustrated. "I don't want to get my hands dirty with this, but I guess I have no choice now," I muttered.
"What is so important about the statue that he is pressing on the issue?"
Camilla took a deep breath before explaining. "The statue belongs to the Royal Family of Valenzia. They are an ancient and powerful family, known for their wealth and influence."
I nodded, intrigued. How come I didn't know about this."So, how did the statue end up in Savino's hands?"
Camilla's expression turned somber. "The Royal Family of Valenzia was involved in a brutal coup about a decade ago. The family was torn apart, and many of its members were killed or forced into exile."
I gasped, shocked by the revelation. "That's terrible. But what does this have to do with Savino?"
Camilla's voice was calm and measured. "Savino's family has a long history of rivalry with the Royal Family of Valenzia. It's possible that Savino's family was involved in the coup, and that they stole the statue as a symbol of their victory."
I felt a chill run down my spine as I processed the information. This case was much more complex and sinister than I had initially thought.
"Then why wasn't he handed to the law if they…" Camila shook her head.
"He is Savino, the only one richer than him in this city is your husband. He is the only one that can go against him."
"How powerful is Lorenzo in this city," Camila shook her head at my ignorance.
"You need to look up his name and also question him, he owns almost this city."
I sighed my mind telling back to the so-called case, so him making this a pressing issue meant something.
"For him to press charges against that person means it can be reacted to the coup that had occurred," she added and my eyes widened.
As I recalled the details of the case, I zoomed in on the pictures, my eyes scanning the images.
"What are you doing?" she asked, confused.
"Yes, that's it." I let out and Camilla stared at me confused, "See, right underneath the statue, I noticed a small space. I guessed that it might contain some kind of evidence that could put them in trouble."
I looked up at Camilla, and we exchanged a knowing glance. "It has a flash drive, and the trespasser has something on him… so he needed to make things worse for me," I explained and she smiled.
"Smart as always," she let out and we both slapped our hands until we began to hear a commotion outside the firm.
"What is that?" I asked Camilla but she didn't answer my question, "Let's go check it out." she announced.
Knowing she wouldn't let me be if I didn't go with her, I closed my laptop and tagged along with her.
As we walked out, all I could see were women in the firm gathered in front of the firm entrance swooning over something.
I then noticed how they gave way from me to pass through until I got to the front leaving my eyes widened.
