Chereads / A Legacy In Ruins / Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

The bell above the door of Crystal's chimed softly, signaling yet another customer's arrival. But this time, Calla did not hear it. Her mind is elsewhere, trapped in the web of the offer Zayne Aldridge had laid before her and the threat Victor Sinclair had so ominously left. She stands behind the counter, absentmindedly rearranging a display of diamond pendants, but her thoughts are far from the delicate jewelry before her.

Zayne Aldridge. Just his name was enough to send ripples through the gemstone industry, and now, somehow, she found herself at the heart of his next big move. He had ask her to help him market yellow sapphires, gems so rare and elusive that most jewelers never saw them in their lifetime. And if that was not enough to consider; there was Victor Sinclair's warning. She could not shake off the way his eyes had lingered on her, before delivering that chilling message:

You never know when you will find yourself on the wrong side.

Calla tries to steady her breathing as she replays the scene over and over in her head. The look in Zayne's eyes when he had mentioned Madagascar, the intensity of his presence, the way he had spoken about competitors with such casual disdain. She had been intrigued by his offer, how could she not be? It was a chance to step into a world far beyond Crystal's. But the weight of everything, the risks, the sheer magnitude of what was being asked, feels overwhelming.

"Calla, are you okay?"

The voice of her co-worker, Lucy, snapped her back to reality. Lucy is standing at the entrance to the back room, her hands full of paperwork. She looks at Calla with great concern.

Calla blinks, forcing a smile. "Yeah, I am fine. Just thinking about some things."

"Uh...huh," Lucy says, not convinced at all. "You have been acting strangely since that guy left. Who was he anyway? He looked like he stepped out of a magazine ad for billionaire bachelors."

Calla's stomach flips at the mention of Zayne, but she keeps her voice even. "Just a client. Nothing special."

Lucy snorted. "Right. Nothing special. Sure, Calla. Whatever you say."

Calla does not respond. She is not ready to talk about Zayne or his offer, not when she had not even figured out what it meant for herself. She needs space, time to think. But time was not something she had an abundance of.

As Lucy disappears into the back room, Calla's phone vibrates in her pocket. She pulls it out, her heart skips a beat as she sees an unknown number on the screen. Hesitating for a moment, she swipes to answer.

"Hello?, Calla. It's Zayne."

The sound of his voice immediately sends a jolt of adrenaline through her. She straightens, grips the phone tighter. "Zayne...hi."

"I am sorry to call you so soon, but I wanted to check in. Have you thought about my offer?"

His voice is as smooth and controlled as ever, but there is an underlying urgency to his words. He is not wasting time. Calla swallows hard, suddenly aware of the weight of the decision before her.

"I have," she says, though her mind is still clouded with uncertainty. "It is a lot to take in."

"I understand," Zayne says, "It is not an easy decision, and I don't expect you to make it lightly. But this opportunity won't wait forever. The market is moving, and I need someone I can trust by my side as we make this play."

Calla's pulse quickens. She can hear the sincerity in his voice, the subtle pressure he is placing on her. He is not wrong, opportunities like this does not come around often, and she knew if she let it slip away, she might never get another chance like it. But Victor's warning echoes in her mind, a reminder of the dangers that came with this world. If she stepped into Zayne's life, she would also be stepping into the crosshairs of people like Victor Sinclair.

"I just… I don't know what all of this means," she says, "Victor Sinclair came here yesterday, and the way he talked to me, it felt like a threat."

There is a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Calla wonders if Zayne have hung up. But then he speaks, his voice low and serious. "Victor is a bad man, I won't deny that. But he is also desperate. His company is failing, and he will do whatever it takes to claw his way back. Don't let him intimidate you."

Calla bites her lip, her mind racing. Zayne is confident, so sure of himself, and it was hard not to be swept up in his certainty. But she is not like him, she did not thrive in high stakes.

"Zayne," she starts, choosing her words carefully, "why me? You could have anyone in the industry working with you. Why did you come to Crystal's?"

There is another pause, and this time, as Zayne speaks, his voice is calmer, almost vulnerable. "Because I need someone who sees beyond the dollar signs. Someone who understands people, not just profit margins. You are not like the others, Calla. You have an eye for detail, a way of connecting with people. That is rare in this business."

His words moves her, and for a moment, she feels herself waver. Maybe he is right. Maybe she did have something to offer that the others didn't. Maybe this was her chance to prove herself, to step into a world she had always admired from a distance. But the fear still lingers, gnawing at her resolve.

"I need more time," she says finally.

"I understand," Zayne replies. "But don't take too long. The world won't wait."

He hangs up, leaving Calla standing in the middle of the store, her heart racing. She slips her phone back into her pocket, trying to steady herself, but the weight of the decision is pressing down on her. She needs to clear her head, to figure out what she wanted. But how could she make such a monumental choice when the stakes were so high?

Later in the evening, Calla finds herself walking aimlessly through the streets. The sun is beginning to set, and the air is crisp with the promise of autumn. She needs space, she needs to think. The busy streets around her seem to offer some sense of anonymity, a place where she could lose herself for a little while.

But no matter how far she walks, Zayne's offer, and Victor's threat continues to weigh heavily on her mind. Every corner she turn to, every person she passes, seem to remind her of the decision she has to make. It was not just about yellow sapphires or gemstone markets, it was about stepping into a world that could change her life forever. Was she ready for that? Her phone vibrates again, and this time, it is a message from an unknown number. Her heart leaps in her chest as she opens it.

We need to meet. Tonight. Come to The Sapphire Room at 8:00.

There is no signature, but she knows exactly who it is. Zayne. Calla stares at the message for a moment, she is now afraid. He is not giving her much time to think, but maybe that was intentional. Maybe Zayne Aldridge was not the type of man who gave people the luxury of taking their time. If she did not show up tonight, she might lose the opportunity for good.

Glancing at her watch, she realizes it is already 7:30. She has thirty minutes to make a decision, to either meet Zayne and step into his world, or walk away and return to the safety of her dull life at Crystal's.

Her mind races as she considers her options. If she went, there was no telling what the night might bring. Zayne's world was one of power, wealth, and influence, a world where every decision had high stakes. But it was also a world she had never been part of. A world that terrified and intrigued her in equal measure.

And then there was Victor Sinclair. His words still raced in her mind, a constant reminder that this was not just business, it was a dangerous game, one with very real consequences. If she aligned herself with Zayne, she will also be making enemies, powerful enemies.

But what if she did not go? What if she let fear hold her back? Calla has spent years dreaming of something more, something bigger than her life at Crystal's. She had worked very hard to build a reputation for herself, and now the opportunity of a lifetime was being handed to her.

She looks at her watch again. 7:35. Time is ticking away, and with it, her chance to make a choice. Taking a deep breath, Calla makes her decision. She turns and begins to walk toward the Sapphire Room.

The Sapphire Room is located in one of the city's most exclusive hotels, a place reserved for the elite. As Calla approaches the entrance, her heart races with anticipation. This was it. She is about to step into a world she had only ever seen from afar.

Inside, the room is dimly lit, with deep blue velvet curtains draped along the walls with soft ambient lighting giving a serene glow over the space creating an atmosphere of quiet luxury. The clientele matched the setting, rich, powerful individuals who moved with the confidence that came from knowing they belonged in places like this.

Calla knew she did not belong here. This was not her world. Yet, here she was, on the precipice of something she could not quite define. Zayne had invited her into his realm, and if she walks further into this room, there would be no turning back.

A host approaches her with a polite, practiced smile. "May I help you, miss?"

She clears her throat.

"I am meeting someone. Zayne Aldridge."

The host's expression did not change, though his face brightens with recognition at the name.

 "Right this way."

He leads her through the room, past tables filled with low conversations and clinking glasses, until they got to a secluded corner. Zayne sits alone at a private table, his back facing the wall. His charcoal suit and open-collared shirt makes him look as though he belongs here more than anyone else, as though he were the king of this world.

When he sees her, his face softened ever so slightly. He stood up, his movements fluid and controlled, and gestured for her to sit across from him.

"Calla," he greets, "I'm glad you came."

She took a deep breath and sits down, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

 "I didn't think I had much of a choice."

Zayne smiles, though there is something dangerous in it.

"There is always a choice. You could have stayed at Crystal's, lived a quiet life. But something brought you here tonight. You want more, don't you?"

His words hangs in the air.

"I don't know what I want. I am just trying to understand what this is all about." Calla says.

Zayne's smile fades, now replaced with seriousness. He leans forward, his gaze locking onto hers.

"This is about power, Calla. It is about control. The gemstone industry is not just about selling pretty rocks, it is about influence. Whoever controls the mines, controls the market. And right now, I am on the verge of expanding my empire. But I need someone who understands people, someone who can be my eyes and ears in places I can't always reach."

Her mind wanders, trying to process what he was saying. This was not just about yellow sapphires. It was about so much more.

"And you think I am that person?"

"I do," Zayne says without hesitation. "You have something that can not be bought. A connection to people, an instinct for understanding what they want and need. That is why I chose you."

His confidence is unnerving, and yet, it is also intoxicating. No one had ever spoken to her like this before, with such certainty that she was destined for something greater. But with that certainty came a heavy burden. If she accepts his offer, she will be stepping into a world where she was no longer in control of her own life. Zayne would be calling the shots, and she would be following his lead.

"I am not sure I can do this," she admitted. "This is not my world. I don't know the first thing about..."

"You don't have to know everything," Zayne interrupted, his tone firm.

"You will learn. And you won't be alone. I will be there every step of the way."

Calla looks down at her hands, her mind swirls with doubts and fears. She thinks of Victor's threat, the danger that lurks in the shadows of Zayne's world. But she also thinks of the opportunity, the chance to finally step out of her small, ordinary life and into something extraordinary.

Before she could speak, Zayne's phone vibrates on the table. He looks at the screen. "I have to take this," he says, his voice suddenly colder. "It is important."

He stood up and stepped away, leaving Calla all alone at the table. She watches as he speaks into the phone, his back turned to her, his posture rigid. Something about the way he moves gave her chills.

Her phone vibrates again, pulling her attention away from Zayne. She looks at the screen and saw a message from an unknown number:

Be careful who you trust. Not everything is as it seems.

Calla's blood ran cold. She stares at the message, her heart racing. Was it Victor? Or someone else? And what did it mean?

Zayne returns to the table a moment later, his expression unreadable. " I am sorry about that," he says, sitting back down. "Where were we?"

Calla swallows hard, trying to shake off the unease that had settled over her.

"I was about to ask what happens if I say yes."

Zayne leans back in his chair, he studies her carefully.

"If you say yes, everything changes. You will be working for me, but more than that, you will be part of something bigger. You will have access to resources and opportunities you have never imagined. But there is a price."

"What kind of price?"

Zayne's eyes darkens, and for a moment, Calla could see a glimpse of the man Victor had warned her about.

"Loyalty. Once you are in, there is no backing out. You are either with me, or you are against me. And if you are against me, well… let's just say that would not be a good place to be."

Calla feels the weight of his words overwhelm her. This was the moment of truth. She could walk away now, return to her life at Crystal's, and never look back. Or she could take the leap and follow Zayne into his world, a world of power, danger, and unimaginable wealth.

Her phone vibrates in her lap, another message from the unknown number:

Choose wisely.

She looks up at Zayne, his face calm and composed, as if he already knew what her answer would be.

Taking a deep breath, Calla made her choice.

"I am in," she says, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her.

Zayne's lips curves into a satisfied smile. "Good. Welcome to the game."

And just like that, her world shifted. There was no going back now.
