Chapter 5
I was literally flying in the streets to save my life. I wanted to transform, but I couldn't do that with the humans walking around. I glanced back a number of times and I couldn't see him, but I knew he was right behind me because the rotten dead plant scent kept lingering around and my wolf was still reacting strangely to him. If only she understood the gravity of the situation we were in.
When I finally saw the woods coming up, I sighed in relief and increased my pace. I knew the only reason he hadn't caught up with me was probably because he was trying to avoid the human stares as well. Everyone knew that the blood sucking creatures were pretty fast, and there was nowhere I could outrun him with my human legs.
I couldn't point it out; why was he even after me? I hadn't caused him any trouble, and I can remember the treaty clearly stating that if there was no problem, then there was no reason to attack. Good enough, I had figured out what he was and had minded my business by leaving the club for him. What does he still want with me now?
Immediately I approached the woods. I jumped and shifted midair, landing on my paws, my shredded clothes falling in pieces beside me. I didn't care less about the clothes and continued my run; I was much faster with the transformation. The more I ran, I noticed my wolf didn't really want to, but she had to push forward.
I could hear the rustling of dried leaves behind me and knew he wasn't so far from me again; the blood sucker was really wishing for his death. I could feel fear rising in my heart; I didn't know why I got this strange fear about him. This wasn't my first time seeing or killing a blood sucker; I was pretty much never afraid of them, but the energy this one possessed got me wishing he would just go away.
I thought of calling for help with the mind link, but I was still far from home, and furthermore, I wouldn't want my father to know I was outside or where I was coming from.
A sharp pain on my hind leg made me wince and growl in pain, stopping my run immediately. I glanced at her leg and saw that I had stepped on a trap that was clearly set up by a human who was either trying to hunt my kind for proof as they had been doing so these past years or one who genuinely wants to hunt for other animals for consumption. Whichever it was, all I knew was that he had completely ruined my life by leaving that trap in that particular place. I was trapped without hope, and now I started praying that the blood sucker would just scream at me. I winced as the pain surged through my veins.
I felt forced to shift back into my human form.
I tried to free my leg, but when I touched it, it hurt like a bitch. I winced in pain and bit my tongue hard to stop myself from screaming. I heard the rustling of the leaves and remembered my current situation. He was close; I could perceive his scent much stronger now without the intoxicated scent of humans.
I flashed my eyes around, wondering which side he would jump out from. Vampires were always light on their feet, but I could always hear them, even if faintly, except for him. I recalled the time in the club; it was like no one was moving. Who is he anyway?
"You are a long way from home, little wolf." I heard the most tantalizing voice say, and my wolf reacted to it. I glanced around, but there was no sign of him. I knew he was there; I could smell him, his dead plant scent that was somehow messing with my mind and my wolf.
"Stay back; I am not afraid of you." I yelled the lie with every confidence I could muster, my eyes searching frantically, refusing to be caught unaware by him. I could feel my wolf searching for him as well, but unlike me, she was searching without fear but with...longing.'
"Oh, but you should be, little wolf." He stepped out of the shadows then, his midnight blue eyes holding me spellbound, and the full moon wasn't helping matters as it was highlighting his skin, making him paler than he should be with the tree leaves casting long and sexy shadows on his face.
I gulped, not only my wolf this time, because even I was swooned away by the man's beauty. If not what he was, I would have been kissing those pink, juicy lips of his. I realized that I had not gotten a clear view of his look back in the club because of the dimmed lights. The man should be given the award of the most handsome man I had ever set my eyes on, be it a wolf, a human, or even a BLODD SUCKER.
"You can't be; I have killed more of your kind, and I won't hesitate to kill you too," I warned, still yet another lie. I would have spared you my knight in a shining pale skin. I was only trying to put on a brave facade.
**
Kieran chuckled. He could smell the fear off her, but somehow he loved how she was trying to hide it and put up a front. He took a step closer, and that was when it hit him—the tantalizing scent he had perceived earlier, and it took him only a second to realize what smelled so good—'her'blood'. He gulped, his eyes going to her foot that was still stuck in the trap, the blood that coated it, and he shivered. With the amount of blood he had last night, he shouldn't grow thirsty for the next seven days, and even so, he shouldn't be thirsty for a howler's blood; they don't feed on them.
**
I noticed the change in the man, and I followed his gaze to my damn stucked foot. Fear rose in my heart immediately, and I took my eyes back at him. "You don't feed on us." I felt a need to remind him, seeing the way his eyes were not leaving my wound.
"Exactly," he whispered in a terrifying voice, his eyes shifting back at me, but rather than midnight blue, it was glowing red. "I kill your kind."
**
He could feel his fangs elongating, and he tried so hard to hide it. He could see his reflection in her eyes, and he knew he looked terrifying now. What is wrong with me? He wondered, his eyes going to that soft spot on her neck; he could see her pulse and the blood flowing in her veins, and that was when he realized that he was longing to sink his fangs on her, not to feed on her but to... Mark her?
He took a step back, surprised at his own longing, and fought to control himself before he did something that even he would regret. His eyes flashed between blue and red as he fought for control, but at the end, he squatted near her foot so swiftly that she transformed her hand into paw midair and scratched him badly on the face, warning him to stay away.
**
I growled angrily at him, and when he looked at me and I saw the huge lines of her claws on his beautiful face, I felt bad immediately for damaging his gracious face and even heard my wolf whimper in pain for him.
Vampires were good at healing speedily, but even a wound from wolf claws would take days to heal completely. We had been taught so in school, and I had seen an experiment as well when they had captured one and experimented on him. Our claws were deadly to them just as nightwalker fangs are deadly to us. A bite from them always takes days to heal, and if too deep, a weak wolf would die from the pain before it fully heals.
I had wanted to apologize seeing she had hurt him so badly, but something bizarre happened. I watched with my very eyes as the claw lines began filling up, and soon, his face was as smooth as ever. My mouth dropped open, a wave of fear washed over me, and I backed away from him; however, as bad luck may have it, my action triggered my wound, and my leg hurt like hell.
"Be still," he said. His voice was shockingly soft, and my wolf became still immediately, forcing me to obey.
**
'Shouldn't I be mad at her for hurting me?' He wondered; however, he wasn't, and rather, he leaned towards her feet and pried the teeth of the trap open. He stared at her injured foot, and he was overcome with the emotion to help heal her since her healing speed was slow compared to his. But before he could do that, he stopped himself and let her foot drop loudly, causing her to yell in pain. He stood up, retreating to a safe distance. "I should kill you for hurting me, but from the look of it, you are in a worse shape than I am, so I will let it pass tonight."
**
I stared at my foot; he may have dropped me forcefully, but he had still helped me, and I wondered why. I glanced at him, wanting to say something, but I found him looking at me, and it was only then that I realized I was naked. I was sure my cheeks looked like a tomato, and I prayed there was a way she could magically clothe myself. I could still feel his gaze burning all over me, but I didn't dare look back.
**
Kieran watched her; he could sense the change in her emotion; she wasn't afraid anymore, and even though he was surprised and wondered when he stopped being scary, he was more concerned with the new emotion she had picked up. Her body language was changing, and he could hear the increase in her heartbeat as well as the sexual tension that was now hovering in the air. "What are you doing?" he asked, not understanding how her emotions could change so drastically.
**
I felt more embarrassed knowing he had picked up the change in my body. Damned human, he really did drug me. I wanted to go back to the club and deal with the asshole, but I was more worried about the man in front of me and the fact that my wolf was in support of anything he would do to me now, which was a first. Even if I was drugged, my wolf shouldn't be affected by it, so why is she swooning over the damned blood sucker? My body was reacting quickly to the medicine, and it wasn't helping if a crazy hot vampire was standing in front of me, gawking at my naked glory. I shivered at that thought and had to bite back a moan.
**
A new scent suddenly overshadowed the tantalizing scent of her blood, and having lived as long as he had, Kieran recognized the scent immediately. Apparently, it was the same in every woman, be it a nightwalker, a human, or even a howler.
In a swift movement, he was before her immediately, and he grabbed her tightly by the neck, "Are you trying to seduce me, little wolf?" He smiled, but his voice poured out tauntingly.
