Soren and Idris stepped out of the house of Idris's friend, whose magic was as fascinating as it was creepy. His ability to manipulate bones was unique, and through it, Soren had learned that his new body was only eight years old.
With that out of the way, they had finished everything they had come to the city for. Idris had bought all the supplies, herbs and ingredients she needed, and Soren had new clothes and now knew how old he was.
With the new information in mind, they walked towards the gate to make their way home. They wanted to get home before the weather changed and they had to fly home in the rain or storm.
Already there were grey clouds in the sky, but if they left now, they would make it in time.
However, on the way to the gate, a loud scream rang through the streets.
''A thief! Stop him!''
Soren and Idris turned immediately in the direction of the shouting. The people in the street parted as a figure in a dark cloak rushed through the crowd.
The would-be thief had his face hidden by a cloth, and the ground heaved beneath his feet, lifting him up on a wave of solid rock, as if he were surfing on the ocean's waves.
But before the thief could escape further, there was a loud noise and lightning struck the ground in front of the thief, illuminating the street.
The sudden impact caused the ground to tremble, and a shockwave swept through the crowd, who recoiled in fright. A man with short, spiky blue hair and a grey robe with a stag crest appeared in front of the thief.
''Give up or you will be razed to the very ground. Do you understand? Because you are an earthma—'' But before he could finish his sentence, a large boulder flew straight at him.
He leaped aside in surprise as the boulder hit where he had just moments before stood with a loud crash.
''Be quiet and get out of my way.'' The thief snapped in anger.
Without hesitation, the thief opened his grimoire and shouted, ''Earth magic: Golem of the Earth!''
The ground beneath his feet immediately began to shake as he threw his hand forward. A massive, solid figure of pure earth rose from the cobbled ground. The golem grew at a frightening speed and reached a threatening size as it slowly straightened up.
The Magic Knight took a quick glance at the towering Golem, grimaced, and muttered, ''All right then, the hard way it is.'' His grimoire began to glow once more, while electric sparks crackled around him.
He raised his hand and shouted, ''Lightning magic: Thunderbeam!''
Lightning shot out of his hands and formed in the air into a massive beam of pure energy. The air itself seemed to flicker under the electrical charge as the beam shot towards the golem.
The golem raised its arms and let the lightning crash down on it with a deafening crack. The earth around it began to crumble, and the golem's arms were completely destroyed as well.
"What the..." the Magic Knight murmured in surprise, as the golem continued to stand despite the fierce attack.
The Thief burst out laughing. "Hahaha! Is that all you've got?" he shouted mockingly and full of scorn. "You must have gotten into the Grey Deer by sheer luck. Maybe I should try my luck too, apparently anyone can join the Magic Knights these days!"
"Just you wait, you bastard, I'll show you," hissed the Magic Knight as his grimoire lit up again.
"Lightning magic: Lightning Blades!"
Suddenly, electrical energy flared up around the Magic Knight. Lightning flashed wildly around him, forming into whirling vortices in the air that wrapped around his arms. The ground crackled under his feet, and the crowd watching the fight backed away even further, stunned by the power the Magic Knight released.
The words of the thief pushed the Magic Knight over the edge of his patience.
"That'll teach you some respect!" The Magic Knight yelled, as he closed the distance and charged at the thief.
The thief retreated in fear, taken by surprise by the knight's sudden offensive.
The Golem, who had regenerated his arms, stood in the way of the knight. He raised his arms and struck at the knight, but the knight was too fast for the Golem.
He dodged under the Golem's legs, jumped up and cut off the Golem's head from behind with his lightning blades.
Without wasting any time, he jumped to the thief to catch him for good.
''You bastard!'' The thief panicked and let his grimoire light up again.
''Earth magic: Rock Wall!''
A massive wall of rock shot up out of the ground and rose up in front of him to protect him from the Magic Knight's attack. But the Magic Knight was unstoppable. With a loud crackling growl, he leaped straight at the wall and slammed into it with his electric blade. The lightning pierced deep into the rock, and the wall began to tremble under the pressure.
''I've had enough of your tricks,'' the Magic Knight grumbled as he brought the wall crashing down with a final blow. Stones and debris flew in all directions, and the thief staggered backwards, his eyes wide with astonishment.
But the Magic Knight was already on top of him. With a lightning-fast movement, he grabbed the thief by the collar and effortlessly lifted him up.
''Got you, you worm! Time to go to sleep,'' he grinned before punching the thief in the face, sending him crashing to the ground.
''It's a Magic Knight from the Grey Deer!'' Someone suddenly exclaimed from the crowd.
The people began to murmur and cheer.
''Incredible, a Magic Knight is here!''
''Hurray for the Magic Knights!''
Cries of admiration and relief echoed through the streets.
Magic Knights were not only defenders of the kingdom, but also symbols of the kingdom's hope and strength.
Soren, who had been watching the whole spectacle from the side, looked up at Idris. "I now know what I want to do in the future," he said with determination.
Idris just smiled. "I have a hunch."
After he had seen the fight of the Magic Knights against the thief, it had become clear to him that he, too, had a powerful magic within him. In the last few weeks, while he had been living with Idris, he had tried hard to understand and use his magic. Every day it became easier for him, but one problem still remained.
He had never had the opportunity to compare his magic with that of others.
Idris, she herself had admitted, possessed magic, but it was not strong enough to be accepted into one of the Magic Knight squads. And the village where they lived was on the edge of the kingdom, far from the places and people who were truly powerful in magic.
The other inhabitants of the village were also simple people with little mana, whose magical abilities were limited.
But today he had seen it for the first time. Today he had seen how strong a member of the Magic Knights really was.
And in that moment, Soren knew that he could reach the same level with ease.
Since arriving in this world, he had been lost. Without a clear goal, without knowing why he was here at all. Everything that had happened had remained a mystery to him.
But now, after this day, it was clear to him that he wanted to be more than just a simple farmer from a remote village.
There had to be a reason why he was here. Even though he might never fully understand it, he couldn't believe that his destiny was simply to live in an unassuming village and die there one day.
His place was somewhere else!
Now he finally had a goal!
